I recently shot an air show with the same camera/lens as you using manual exposure, 1/250 or 1/500 for prop, auto ISO, wide area large or auto area, I had quite a good percentage of in focus shots but many were not razor sharp. It was a very windy day and holding the camera steady was challenging. Conclusion, need to practice.

Yes, the weight combination makes holding this setup difficult. That's why for this year's airshow in August, I'm taking my tripod and monopod to make life easier and capture more images in focus 😉

Need to build up those arm muscles a month before the next airshow you attend. I always enjoy your wildlife videos as that is mostly what i do too. But i must say i think this is your best effort in my opinion. Sorting through 10K of images is always a big task. Maybe i just like seeing those sort of plane images and videos. Picked up a few tips which is also good. The Gold Coast beaches are a great setting to hold an airshow. Thanks for the time and effort put into this video.

Congrats on a great job and thanks for sharing your learnings. I'm not sure how to share it to you as I can't seem to be able to share photos here but I found a Reddit chat conversation that goes into the science of what shutter speed is needed to get a full disc blur on props.
@CharlesNPhotography
@CharlesNPhotography Жыл бұрын
to get a full disc blur on props! It all depends on the type of aircraft and the speed that the propellers are rotating at. I use to be able to shoot at 1/125sec and that got me a full circle, but these days I can shoot at that shutter speed.

@@CharlesNPhotography yeah I've sent the chart to your email. For the Osprey even 1/125 is way too fast! But unless you're after that full disc you'll still get some nice implied blur I guess... I certainly had to push my panning skills to their maximum!! It was easier on faster aircraft much harder to pan a slow shutter at a slow speed like the Osprey.

For someone like me who only knows point and shoot with a iPhone 15 Pro Max, what would be a entry level camera to start with? One suggested to me was a Nikon D7500 w/ Sigma 150-600. What other options are there? I have a few airshows this summer attending.
@CharlesNPhotography
@CharlesNPhotography 4 ай бұрын
That would be a very good option, but if your budget could afford the D500, I'd go for it as it has a much faster frame rate at 10fps and the AF is much better as well.

Wouldn't it be better to pick a shutter speed and set the ISO to Auto. Another method is a total manual set of shutter and aperture with Auto ISO. In this way the camera will work to keep a proper exposure when the plane is lower in the sky and adjust ISO when there's more light when the plane climbs. This will help keep all exposures looking consistent.

You need to change the shutter speed for different planes and effects that you want.

@@CharlesNPhotography . If I may Help you ,this are my recomandations for a more stable footage when you want to shoot Airplanes . The main key for good stable footage is a very good tripod such as Manfrotto or Sachtler with a fluid head and put a hard hard setting for the movement of head . Camera settings : Shutter speed 2x the frame rate so 50fps :1/100 shutter . AE -0.75 to -1 ( less light is always better becuase with filming planes you go from left to right or from direct sunlight to normal position ) . AF off always put it on infinity or set your camera sharp on an object 500m away . AF "on" only for planes who are close ( Taxiing) ."auto Iris" make that the iris stays between f 4 and f6 that is the best setting for crisp sharp images . Gain always zero in normal light . Always Stabilizer on but try it out which stabilzer setting is the best for Airplane footage with your camera I would say try it once out and you will see It Will be much more stable . What I've seen is that the camera is crisp sharp so it must be possible to make stable footage . Greetings and keep on, it's only with practicing that you improve
