I like the concept and will be watching to see how it evolves into an actual product. The question I have is about the batteries usability when the trailer is in storage at home. If you give this the capability for the trailer's battery to act as a home backup battery (similar to what the F-150 Lightning can do) that would be a huge selling point.

Great concept @coolcat312. There would be ideal for disaster power back up of a house. Really depends on the battery size. My house would take about 12Kw a day so if this about 50kw it would be perfect.

As someone in the EV business, being able to leverage an EV battery to assist with home power needs is not a technical feat at all, it’s just a simple low cost option. The better answer for home power is a home battery and/or a generator, but I understand the appeal. It makes more sense in trucks simply because trucks will have bigger batteries and folks the drive trucks, like myself, appreciate this type of feature more in general. The truth is that homes are terribly inefficient as they were never designed to run off anything but stable, limitless grid power, so any EV battery will only provide minimal support for today’s home power needs.

I'm not an RVer but this is very cool. It would be great if you could triple the solar panel capacity by making a stacked set of panels where the top one could stay in place while the two below it could slide out to opposite sides with motors. The two that slide out would also serve as awnings.

This is a really wild, innovative, and cool idea - bringing select, electric automotive-like capabilities to a travel trailer that previously would have been unimaginable with a combustion engine and then using that same tech to give you way more power off grid or boondocking than we have now. Whether this actually comes to life or does so at a reasonable price point, we will see, but I love where this is going directionally. It's not without its flaws I'm sure, but this is the kind of innovation we need to see in the RV market IMO.

In reality this is going to be an absolute nightmare. Until it is a long proven product I wouldn't touch it with your money. It is hard enough to find quality people to fix travel trailers that haven't changed in 50 years. This type of technology is going to require a very high level, highly trained technician. Not some guy that knows how to repair a 7-pin connector. Think about it. You've spent ten's of thousands of $ to get the education needed for this type of tech, basically an engineering degree and you're going to work at an Airstream dealer? Probably not. Manufactures love to tell us how wonderful new technology is but the reality new technology comes with years of issues until the manufacture can iron them out.

The coupler, inertia brakes, jockey wheel (jack) all seem to be the European BPW manufacturer. I also note that the axle is more central as on your European Airstreams. This makes a lot of sense for today's smaller vehicles that can only take a lighter nose weight. This Airstream looks as if it will be big internationally. The integrated lights will be easier to adapt to most countries that require amber turn signals and in many countries also a reversing light and rear fog lamp. The red triangular reflector would look good if integrated also, but these can easily be attached. I like this concept very much and I do know that a small manufacturer in Turkey (or Türkiye as they would now preferred to be known as) has also presented something similar although that is more of an off-road trailer. Clearly, this is the way forward.

Heard of it quite early I guess, was intrigued by the idea. Having made up my mind since then, more things come up everytime I think about it: - bidirectional charge port is a must - allow the motor concept to be flexible, e.g. think about a single motor version (for cost reasons) and think about hub motors (for space and complexity reasons). - given campers/RVs spend a lot of time not at a campsite or on the road, make the new, added tech as flexible as possible to use. You show/have the battery and solar among them. Let the features provide their service while spending time on the campsite or at home: vehicle-to-grid/vehicle-to-home power (see first note), and that as well with the solar essentially growing the solar at home (or even replacing it, if one choses to do so). It may not be much, but for people having none, why not using it while it is there. - make it international in its core (especially the core electrics/electroonics). Personally, if I were to invest in this, my first idea is how much benefit do I have while this thing is at my place, since it will be expensive and have components that are not meant to idle, like the battery and solar. Motors will sit whenever they sit, so there is no difference, except depreciation. That being said, I would like to connect this permanently with my home (like stable, not permanent as in fix), and do what modern BEVs can do, like the lightning and many other new BEVs: delivering power back. Now that this thing has a substantial solar roof, it will deliver quite some Watts during sun penetration and could make a house much more sustainable. And that can be taken whereever one goes - brilliant! My next guess is that this would be absolutely perfect as a mobile office. Even better as any Airstream or other RVs or campers ever were! What draws me back is the idea of having a whole, complex (=expensive) E-powertrain, especially with 2 motors. Hence my mention of hub-motors (much better with a camper than with cars, especially off-road IMHO, think of unsprung mass). Somebody else mentioned a freight-version or so, I think that is a good idea, but I guess totally not in Airstreams business area - but maybe you think about it. But what I would love it to become (is it that way now ? I have no idea!) is a modular approach, like seeling it naked without interior and have special outfitters doing custom build or let customers do it themselves. It would make the office idea I mentioned earlier or other business ideas much more realistic and again: flexible. This concept is indeed idea-fueling!

I have wanted a RV/travel trailer for over a decade, but I was active duty military and the moving every few years made getting one unrealistic. However, here is my wish list (as a current EV owner) of what I’d like in an electrified camper like your eStream or comparable product like those from Pebble and Lightship: 1. A trailer lightweight enough to be towed by existing EVs. I know getting down to say Model Y limits is not realistic, but maybe Model X? 2. NACS-compatible DC fast charging 3. Bi-directional charging for home battery backup or off-grid EV charging. 4. Range comparable to existing EVs so you’re not stopping to charge your RV more than you would an EV on roadtrips. 5. Built-in solar charging that can cover a day of use on a sunny day (i.e., refrigerator, cooktop, lights, and HVAC). 6. Energy efficient appliances, to include a reasonably sized HVAC unit, fridge/freezer, induction burner, and microwave. 7. Aerodynamic body shape. 8. Space and power conducive to digital nomad lifestyle (lots of outlets and workspace). 9. Integrated satellite internet? 10. Electronic locks that can be remotely operated via app. 11. The self parking thing is sweet! Will there be sensors for when backing in to tight corners or when you don’t have 360° visibility around the camper? 12. MODERN STYLING INSIDE!

I love the concept. However I really question the ability of the trailer to have its own drive motors. Instead, I’d rather use its large battery bank to potentially extend the range of the tow vehicle. To me, that would reduce the complexity of the drive system.
@untitled795
@untitled795 2 жыл бұрын
That's literally what they are accomplishing. The trailer only drives on its own motors when it needs to park itself (easier than parking it with a vehicle) The aero adjustments to the body reduce drag, making it more efficient to tow. The electric platform and motors will help extend the range of the vehicle that is towing it (Most likely an EV as well) Without the motors in the trailer it could not park itself, the batteries would then essentially be dead weight as they are heavy. Source: I was a lead designer on this project.
@chrismehling9968
@chrismehling9968 2 жыл бұрын
@@untitled795 Thank-you for the reply and I understand what you are saying. From a cost point of view, I don't really value the trailer being able to park its self. If it was an option that I was paying for, I wouldn't do it. That's just my honest feedback. I also imagine that if I was towing this, it is important to have a proper towing vehicle, once sized correctly for the load behind it. I agree that I would probably be using a EV, but in my mind that would be a Truck EV like a F-150 Lightning or Tesla CyberTruck. Since I don't value the expense of a drive train on the trailer I would rather be able to utilize the trailer's battery pack to direct supplement the battery in the tow vehicle. Is this the right way to think about this? I'm not sure. It was just my initial reaction.
@untitled795

@@chrismehling9968 I know that they really tried getting the press images with the F-150 lightning rather than the models X, but I know it didn’t pan out from Ford’s side either. At the end of the day I think they went with “EV trailer needs EV car towing it” approach As for the self parking, I think it hits a demographic of people who do value that convenience (which is really all it is, admittedly). They say the whole outdoors camping movement is on a rise, and this feature alone would indoctrinate a bunch of people who just wouldn’t want to deal with all the technicalities (it is what it is, no matter your view on that) Cost is a huge aspect of this concept, which is why they go out of their way to make sure customers will have a realistic impression of what features would make it into a production version. This specific concept involves all the offerings of what a Trailer could accomplish on its own if given an EV platform, which is a really cool case study and it was a joy working on it I must say! This is mostly engineering spiel and I’m a designer, so not the best to get an answer out of but that’s the info I was aware of. I

@@untitled795 maybe you can talk to the engineers and ask them if they can make the charge port bidirectional. It would be good, not only to feed electricity, but to also be able to charge an EV. At least put a 240v outlet or a few 120v outlets on the exterior to charge an EV and other stuff without going inside.

Love the forward look! So much of this is fantastic. I think EV’s in the near future will have plenty of towing capacity, but having battery life for days is awesome. A light weight option that doesn’t have the power bank, can draw power from the WV but still provide recharging solar from the large roof would be a nice route as well.

Si love so much! Especially that they use a Black couple and child also, several “walk ons.” The features are draw dropping. I would love to easily afford, use, and enjoy this with a great partner/friend or even solo!

Cool idea. Cost is the issue. Can’t imagine this being even somewhat reasonable to purchase.

You nailed it sir. The $100,000 question my high tech Subaru Outback XT cost me $49k so I would be shocked if the Estream would be less then $125,000.

Hopefully there is a feature added to have rear-view cams sync up with one of the vehicles dash monitors. Either way, it's nice to see these designs come to life.

This looks awesome, although one of things I’ve found that can limit your stay outdoors is how much fresh water and gray water you can store. Im assuming this could use a biodegradable toilet but those battery’s are where my water tanks sit.(we have 22ft Caravel) I wonder how much fresh water and gray water can this trailer actually store? This video talks about towing a bunch but nothing about heat, AC, cooking, hot water, showering and the rest what comes with living / staying in a camper. I know its a concept but those are important factors.

Water and waste are always going to be the limiting factor. We have a Jayco 16 FBS with large tanks (55/30/30). Without showers, it will last the two of us about a week.
