Once it reopens, I think Desperado absolutely needs to be considered for landmark status. the tallest coaster in the world when it opened, the first coaster with an entrance inside a casino, one of last remaining arrow hypers, and the sister ride to a current ace landmark, magnum at cedar point.
@CoasterHour
@CoasterHour Жыл бұрын
I’d respectfully disagree with this. While Desperado is a fascinating coaster, it didn’t really contribute a whole lot in terms of changing the industry and it was just another coaster in the list of rides that tried to break records in the 1990s-2000. I guess if the other rides of that era like Big One and Phantom’s Revenge get considered it would be fair game.

@@CoasterHour Desperado is one of the longest coasters in the world at almost 6,000 feet long, so maybe it deserves that status. It is the seventh longest in the world.

@@x2tatsucoasters9756 I don’t think that adds much to Desperado’s case. It is the 7th longest steel coaster in the world but if we are going off of that logic Steel Force should be given landmark status since it is the 9th longest steel coaster in the world. I think most people would agree that Steel Force is not deserving of the status despite it’s stats so I don’t see how Desperado is much different when going by stats.

Outlaw Run at SDC (First Modern wooden Looping Coaster and the first RMC Topper Track) 3. Time Traveler at SDC (First X-Treme Spinning Coaster) 4. Desperado at Buffalo Bills (For surviving this long, for formally being the tallest coaster on earth, and one of arrow's last coasters) 5. Aftershock at Silverwood (Last Giant Inverted Boomerang in NA) 6. Invertigo at Kings Island (Last Vekoma Invertigo in NA) 7. Firebird at Six Flags America (B&M's First Coaster) 8. I think all these coasters are really good choices for the ACE Landmark Award! Personally I doubt it would happen but I think Bandit at Yomiuriland should get landmark status as it inspired Magnum XL-200 and it broke the trend of the tallest coasters going for more inversion focused layouts. Magnum and the 90s-2000s coaster wars likely wouldn’t have happened without Bandit.

@@AirtimeThrills Hard to say how much inspiration Arrow took from Bandit specifically but it is well documented that Cedar Point saw news coverage of Bandit which led to them going to manufacturers asking for layout pitches for the worlds tallest roller coaster that focused on speed, big drops, and airtime. Even if Arrow didn’t directly take inspiration from Bandit for Magnum XL-200 when designing their coaster, the opening of Bandit created the situation that allowed Magnum XL-200 to be built with the specificity that it would be a fast, airtime focused coaster with no inversions.

Another reason Space Mountain at MK deserves the award: As explained by ElToroRyan in his PRC video on Space Mountain, it was the first coaster EVER to be controlled by a computer! Not all modern coasters are designed a computer, but virtually ALL of them are controlled by one! Also, it was the first coaster custom-designed for a permanent inclosure. The one that deserves it most is Vild-Svinet though. In addition to debuting the beyond vertical drop, it revolutionized the compact, budget coaster market. Before it, cheap coasters were all janky, sketchy rides that could be fun, but couldn’t remotely compare to big-budget, extreme rides at big parks in terms of engineering. Then Vild-Svinet comes in using CAD and precise profilings that were just about as comfortable as the big rides, all while costing only a couple million dollars. After Vild-Svinet, we started seeing a bunch of similar models like the S&S El Loco and Mack BigDipper. It might be the single most influential coaster of the new millennium

Considering that ACE Landmarks are very often given out at the annual Coaster Con event or other National-level ACE events, I think that some of the most likely coasters to be the next to get landmark status include: Nighthawk, Blazing Fury, and Tennessee Tornado for Coaster Con in June 2023. I can't think of any good contenders in the NYC area or San Francisco bay area for the future major ACE events there that aren't already ACE Landmarks, though. Also, in terms of defunct coasters that would be deserving of Landmark status, I think Son of Beast has to be mentioned. It truly was the decisive moment that wooden coasters were taken "too far". Rattler, Mean Streak, and Hercules had already shown the dangers of building wooden coasters too large and not keeping them in excellent condition. But Son of Beast, despite surpassing nearly every wood coaster by nearly every metric there was, put the nail in the coffin of trying to break wood coaster records. It was a landmark and a glowing red flag of what NOT to do.

But if they do end up being the next huge thing Time Traveler should definitely be here Whatever ends up being the first S&S Axis, same as Time Traveler, the model could be huge, or they could only sell a few. Flight of Fear opened at Kings Island first, and there was a good size gap before Kings Dominion opened their's. The gap is mostly attributed to differing building priorities. I wasn't aware of that Canadian ACE Landmark. I kind of feel Dragon Mountain is too obscure in location to be given that status. But hey if it is, cool, we'll never forget the bowtie.

Well Canada already has 1 ACE landmark coaster like Coaster at Playland at PNE in Vancouver British Columbia Canada. So if Dragon Mountain does become an ACE landmark it would be the second ACE landmark roller coaster in Canada.

I was at King's Island the spring Hypersonic XLC opened (I think i was there in April and it "opened" like 2 weeks earlier). It was closed all day the day I was there and I never got to ride it. I never realized what a credit that would have been to get. I did see it testing, but never opened. 😞

I'm hoping that the newer coasters will get future landmarks in the future! After all, they deserved to get ACE landmarks for smooth roller coasters like Jersey Devil Coaster and other new roller coasters opening this year!

If it's survives long enough I'd be surprised if Hagrid's doesn't become a future ACE landmark. It may not be a major first but I've never seen a coaster so unique. I have to be honest here and say I'm surprised that the Mummy isn't already an ACE landmark given how many times in a row it won best dark coaster before they retired the award. I'd love to see Alpengeist on the list since it's the tallest invert ever built and barely misses being a hyper invert by 5 feet. Medusa at SFGA would be a good choice as the first floorless coaster too. I'd also say I'd like to see Road Runner Express get an ACE Landmark since it's one of the very last and best of the Arrow Mine Trains.

The top of the list should be ACE coaster classics that haven't recieved the landmark designation. Skyliner comes to mind there. I'd also say rides like Voyage and Boulder Dash are deserving from the engineering perspective. Firebird should get it as the first B&M and even though itvhurts my ACEr core to say it I'd give it to New Texas Giant. Just to name a few.

Video idea: Best sounding ride by park Examples of qualifications would be rides with unique sounds. Sea Dragon at Pacific Park Revolution at Six Flags Magic Mountain Coast Rider at Knott's Berry Farm because of its lift hill sound as well as Pony Express and Montezooma's Revenge at Knott's Berry Farm because of their launch sounds. Xcelerator also has a good sounding hydraulic launch, but I don't know if it would be the best.

i think a lot of american enthusiasts, when talking about historical rides really sleep on Blackpool Pleasure Beach. its not the most amazing park but it is historial. The Big Dipper is turning 100 this August, The Grand National opened in 1935, and is the only surviving wooden mobius loop coaster outside of north america, and is a Grade II listed structure as well. Not to mention the Pepsi Max (or The Big One) which was the worlds tallest when it opened in 1994 and is still going strong.

With the ACE’s strong wooden bias (that’s not a fault against them it’s just how preservation works), I genuinely don’t see how a RMC could ever get the landmark status. I also doubt if any coaster past 2000 could get recognised for a while, and you can forget about international coasters. Out of the ones you put forward: Millennium force (the reason why I picked 2000 for the cutoff), Disney World Space mountain and SFMM Viper would be my personal picks.

Gemini actually did beat the drop record of 1978, with 118'. Also: while Phantoms Revenge is Morgan's version of the old Arrow; I's the 1st with a drop of 200' or more, which nobody can say for Magnum XL-200. Millennium Force ought to be on this list too, as well as what ever what used to be TTD becomes, as Phantom's Revenge ought to be. If "new TTD is on the list then Phantom's Revenge ought to be too. That's only fair. Great video, thanks for posting!

Another one I think is missing from your list is Silver Bullet at Frontier City. Let me explain why. While this coaster isn't spectacular by today's standards and didn't break any stats record when it was new, it can certainly be seen as an engineering marvel of its time. After all, this is the prototype of the Looping Star, which was the first time the modern vertical loop was put on a roller coaster that was easy to take apart, haul around and put back together. No concrete footers needed, just trucks, cranes and some manual labor. It is what eventually started the "Looping War" on German fairs, with the Bruch and Barth families trying to offer more thrill than their competitors. With the last stage of this war being the well-known Olympia Looping, which is probably on most enthusiasts' bucket lists. This makes the coaster the opening line of an interesting chapter of roller coaster development, and as such it deserves the status. I am aware that some people see it as the disappointment of being the tallest coaster in the entire state of Oklahoma, and even after 27 years still being the headline attraction of the park it sits in, but that doesn't change the significance of this particular coaster in the history of this kind of amusement ride.

Batman at Fiesta Texas deserves a landmark for being the first S&S Freespin, paving the way for many more to come. Goliath at Fiesta Texas deserves a landmark for its history, being the only ride which could be salvaged from Six Flags New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Kumba deserves a landmark for being the first traditional sit-down looping coaster to use modern design. Galactica at Alton Towers deserves a landmark for being the first coaster to successfully simulate the flying experience. (I've never ridden a Vekoma Flying Dutchman, but I highly doubt that they simulate the flying experience as well as a B&M does.)

I have to disagree with Superman: Escape From Krypton somewhat. The standard for dictating what came first has always been the official opening date, not passholder entries or even staff testing. By that standard, Tower of Terror at Dreamworld should get the recognition as the first coaster to go 100mph and the first to use LSMs, as it opened on the 23rd January, nearly 2 months before Superman. Also, SFMM cheesed the height record as they decided to build theirs on top of a hill; it had the exact same drop height as TOT. Speaking of Aussie coasters, Scenic Railway at Luna Park Melbourne should get an ACE status for being the oldest continually operating coaster in the world, plus being only one of three coasters left that has a brakeperson. Another coaster should be Wild Mouse at Luna Park Sydney for being one of the last remaining wooden wild mouse coasters in existence.
