This is Episode 2 of a 5 part documentary celebrating Kings Island on its 50th anniversary. This delves into the 1980s, from the opening of the Beast, through all the groundbreaking and record breaking coasters that debuted during the decade as the park became a roller coaster powerhouse. But as much as Kings Island added during the 1980s, their competition would push them to go even farther into the 1990s and beyond, as they entered the next decade with a new owner.

I live right outside of Ohio and Kings Island is my favorite park, even when being compared to Cedar Point. Every ride is a hit and there is a ride for everyone! It’s also one park that I feel so safe in. All the rides have belts along with restraints. And if a ride has any problem, even minor ones, they will close the ride and check the ride. With it opening back within a hour or two. Staff and the overall experience is amazing

I worked at CWL in '83, '84 and '85. That was before Cedar Fair and Six Flags began their monopolies on North American amusement parks. CWL was owned by a broadcasting conglomerate which also owned Kings Island, Kings Dominion and Carowinds. It was a perk for some CWL employees to get free admission and reduced-price accommodation at the affiliated American parks at that time. I missed-out on an opportunity to go with fellow CWL employees to Kings Island in '84. An early bucket-list wish for me since seeing 'the Brady Bunch' episode from King's Island in '73.

It is crazy how so many crazy coasters were added in the 1920s, they were way ahead of the industry's time. Nothing could come close until the 80s and 90s and they needed modern technology.

Thank you for this! There's no way I could properly describe the joy your Kings Island series is bringing me. Even though it would be horrible for me in probably every other way, I want to move to Cincinnati just to be close to King Island. I first visited KI in 1984 and then at least once a year pretty much every year for a long while after that. I remember all of this time period so well. I remember so many things that are gone like Zodiac-the double ferris wheel and Der Spinnin' Keggars (so Cincinnati!). I remember riding King Cobra, Screamin' Demon and The Beast and thinking they were all completely mind blowing. Vortex was my favorite once it debuted. I used to go there with my girlfriend every summer. I remember one time we went rode White Water Canyon and got completely soaking wet. Afterwards, we decided to ride Vortex. Because it was a hot day and we had tons of mouse in our hair (it was the 80s) both of our hair was completely blown back by this process and captured by our excessive mousing into a crazy, matching & very 80s hairstyle. We couldn't stop laughing, I may be gay, but I can still show a girl a good time! 😜What a trip! I haven't dated women for 30 years now, but man it made me laugh to think about all of this!😁

Growing up 20 minutes away, this is the beginning of what helped shaped my enjoyment with the amusement industry. I only got to go once a year, when my father's company hosted their annual company picnic at the park, but I looked forward to that day each year. The next episode (the '90s) is when PKI paid the first paychecks of my life, and I was there nearly every single day for 5 straight summers.

When King's Island sold the Demon to Camden Park, it was renamed the Thunderbolt. I know this, because in 1997, I did a VoiceOver for a commercial for Camden Park where I had the line "I can't imagine Grandma on the Thunderbolt" I would pay good money if anyone could find that ad.

Yes part 2!!🔥🔥 I've been waiting for this I love Kings Island and you know I'm biased because it's my home park and cedar Fair only a few hours away and I also have some family that lives really close to cedar Fair so that was always fun to visit too but Kings Island has always been 5 to 10 minutes away growing up and during the spring break and summer when we were teens me and my brother and sister and or cousins and our friends would go all the time some days we just skipped school we would always ride our bikes it was always a lot of fun to get to the park early mid morning during the week when everyone was at school or work so the park didn't have nearly as many people I mean there was plenty of people but it felt empty compared to a week night or weekend as it normally did even after school was over in the afternoon you would see more and more people showing up and then in the evening more families. But we always loved the no lines to just ride all the coasters over and over again and then by the time it gets more busy we would go to the water park and of course always go through phantom theater a few times. Also random thought Honestly I don't know if there's like copyright licensing issues there but I really wish they would bring that back I know a lot of people want enchanted voyage but phantom theater was great and they could do so much cool stuff with the classic but updated robotics and all that. But yeah such amazing memories.

Although I love what cedar fair has done for the park I do miss the days when kings island was swinging for the fences on every new coaster. The beast was the best of its kind at the time. The bat was flawed but it was a new model and like nothing else. King cobra was the first of its kind in the US and vortex was one of the best of its kind at the time. Cedar fair makes sure that kings island will always be a world class park but they will never give them a coaster lineup that can compete with Cedar point and that's what I miss. It sounded way too close to the new Marriott park now known as six flags great america. Maybe a little market research suggested they put that park elsewhere

So, did anyone else see that Kings Island was voted the #3 park in the country? 3 places above CP too. I keep trying to tell people that KI is the better park in Ohio.
