After removing/cleaning the Aisan carb from an 87 pickup I could not for the life of me figure out why the secondary throttle plate wouldn't open when I turned the throttle all the way (when horizontal upright...it opened when the carb was upside down which confused me even more). Watched this video, tried pulling on the vacuum choke opener linkage while twisting the throttle and voila! 11 years afterwards - I can't thank you enough for keeping me from tearing apart the carb apart a 2nd time!

Perfect explanations! I did a vacuum delete on my 4alc and it runs a lot different now. I'm confused as to how I should hook up the 3 ports on my distributor vacuum advance

Raw fuel going into secondary is caused by syphon effect. This happens when the tiny air openings in the secondary venturi mount become clogged or plugged with old gasoline, ie varnish.

Very nice vid, thanks! Having some issues with my 87 corolla. My dizzy has a dual diaphragm vaccum advance and has 3 ports, two on the top diaphragm adjacent, and one on the bottom diaphragm. I Did an emissions delete cuz the 4alc had a mess of hoses for a bunch of add ons which had a bunch of leaks that I didn't wanna deal with. Problem now is I'm not sure where to run the hoses from the dizzy. Right now I run the top left port on dizzy to the manifold, and have the other 2 plugged. Car runs fine but I felt like I lost some power on the top end? The car Accelerates fine for an old car, but when I reach about 60mph in high gear(automatic) the car just feels sluggish. I find that the car always downshifts to 3rd when ever I try to give it more throttle and open the secondary in 4th gear and it feels unnecessary but the car does it anyways?

Any idea where I can get a new vacuum secondary diaphragm for a CA 1980 Pickup? The rebuild kits don't seem to come with them anymore :(

Hi there mate, by any chance can you share you manual? I will be rebuilding my 4k carb soon and I find it hard to get a service manual. My carb is a toyota 4k on a 4g15 / 8 valve Mitsubishi Engine. The previous original carb is busted and I've converted it to toyota 4k and works great. It's fuel economy to do so with minor loss of power.

Hi! Many thanks for your video, it is very clear now that the membrane in the secondary in one of my carbs is broken! But I still have an issue with an off-throttle stumble... the accelerator pumps are pushing fuel very well, but every time I touch the throttle from idling, it has a massive stumble and then a second later it comes alive... do you have any guess about that?

My 4AC doesn't open its secondary unless you move the vacuum actuator.

I think it stops being a vacuum operated secondary and opens instantly after there is enough angle in the throttle to let the secondary open
