As a stutterer, I whole heartedly appreciate this Man. We’ve spent years listening, observing, sitting back....more than most, learning with honed senses, the nuances associated with spoken communication. You, Future President Biden, are the champion, the bar, and the Voice that will reverberate throughout my drive. Thank you Sir.

I'm 38 and I've stuttered since preschool. Nothing has worked for me, therapy, hypnotherapy etc. It causes me great pain to this day and I find it better not to talk that much because of being laughed at or mocked. But I take great comfort from other famous stutterers out there like Emily Blunt, Bruce Willis, Rowan Atkinson, & Samuel L Jackson. And others I didn't even know about like Julia and Eric Roberts, Nicole Kidman, Sam Neill and Elvis Presley. We're not alone guys, we're stronger than most people 💖

I stuttered as a teenager, and I was bullied for it in school. It still hurts after all these years when I think about it, and I can totally relate to what Biden said about the humiliation and being ashamed. It is very inspiring to see a former stutter become Vice President, and now President.

What an incredible speech. I don't stutter, I don't really know anyone with a proper stutter, but here I am in tears. People say much about President Biden's gaffes, but this speech makes up for any other speech he might have messed up.

I’ve been suffering from stuttering since I was a little boy. I’m 38 now. I can’t say enough how hard it is to live with this disorder. I’ve been laughed at and mocked many times. People who don’t understand think there is something wrong with me. People fear what they don’t understand. My stutter does not define who I am as a man. This speech really touched my heart. 😢

Orcishihi I always try not to let it get me down. When I was little, it was very hard. I always cried when someone laughed at me. I never did anything to them for them to be so cruel. Simple things like talking on the phone or ordering food, is hard for me a lot of times. A lot of people have told me they understand what I’m going through. In my head I was saying, “Is this person just saying that just to be nice to me?” There are still people who think people like us are funny. I don’t think it’s funny at all. I’m sure you don’t either.

Matt hi, there no shame in stuttering, I'm in my 30's and I've had this disorder since I was in preschool and I can relate to everything you been through, I've experienced it myself not a pleasant feeling to have people laugh or mock you through the years just gets exhausting to a point I just want to rip in to them, but I know better than that violence doesn't solve the issue instead more problems, so I just be the bigger man walk away, just shows you society, in general, there needs to be more education and awareness around this, if we ever going to accept any type of disorder for that matter, without the cruel judgement and the mocking by others, but respect and encouragement would be appreciated would mean a lot to suffers from any disorder at the end of the day we are people too we have feelings we have struggles in life just like anyone else we don't want pity we just want society to accept and understand we do exist. Anyway, my stuttering has improved though (thank god! ) the best advice I can give you is don't give up, block all the negativity out of your head, and be your self, don't let your disorder discourage you from seeing the world or dreams you may have or limit yourself in general rise to the challenge! you can do this, if I can, I don't see no reason you can't or anyone else the best treatment in my experience is keep practicing to communicate, reading a book helps or read in general, singing, socializing for example, there an old saying that comes to mind practice makes perfect. I hope my advice was of any help to you or anyone else. have a good day

Matt Fite Matt Fite Hi Matt, sorry I didn’t replied back already. I planned to but work came along and when that was finished I guess I forgot. Dan do81 - hi there, glad to meet you - is SO right. I guess it’s about 1.) accept that you are a stutterer. 2.) accept that there always will be people with an opinion about you. 3.) accept that YOU are the one who has the power to let things - be they positive or negative - get to you. I know this may sound easy, and as a stutterer I still find this very hard to practice, to be honest. Because of how society can react or behave to “people who are different from them” I tend to let my temper get the better of me quite sometimes. And this in general gives me an even sadder feeling. So, what helps me whenever I’m in such a mood, is the realisation of it: I’m aware, I know I can change my mood because nothing positive comes out of negativity, and then I try to just focus on positive things. (I hope this reply made sense. English isn’t my first language, and it’s morning over here and I kind have a hangover 😉 ) Stay strong! Love from Europe

We are so glad you've found Vice President Biden's words on stuttering helpful. We hope your interview goes well! For what it's worth, many people who stutter do find it helpful to mention their stuttering in some way during a job interview. It might not always feel like the right thing to do, but some people choose to say something like, "as you may notice, I do stutter. I get hung up on a word from time to time, but I promise the words will come out eventually." This can help take your mind off of how the other person might react to your stuttering and help you refocus on what you actually want to say!

Even now I stutter now & believe certain employers have rejected me due to being nervous and stuttered. I’m sorry to hear our US president also stutter as well. If he can become president, then others can accept those who stutter for jobs, instead on rejecting them. Thank goodness there are some good people who understand and accept them for their good qualities.

I actually relate to our next president a lot, I also went to Catholic school and suffered through and triumphed over a handicap, though one I wouldn't know about until a few years ago- Asperger's. Joe knew about his condition, it was obvious, but I also 'practiced' in similar ways to him in front of the mirror. It was more when I was older, like in high school and beyond, but I sort of studied and took in interactions I saw on TV and in the movies and apparently became better and better at fitting in and being 'normal' the older I got up til now. But it was much worse when I was a young kid. My eyes would water if I had to stand up for myself or speak to others (the last time it happened was when I stared down a bully in early freshman year of high school). I felt depressed if not suicidal while at school as a 4th and 5th grader- and no young child should ever be made to feel that way. I grew to think people saw me as 'different' in a bad way and developed narcissistic tendencies due to that. Teachers realized I'd zone out and called on me on purpose, leading me to shut down and just stare at them, hole up until they passed and refused to speak. By college I was 'normal' enough, but suffering a lot of remedial depression issues from my struggles and suffered far worse in college even if I had mastered 'normalcy'. By the end, the mental illnesses that come with autism intensified to the point to where I couldn't even carry out a proper job search and had to go work for the family business and finally get therapy, which I had to fight my parents a lot through to get the amount of help I really needed to basically build back an entire lifetime... and unlike Joe my story is far from over. I'm only a little bit better from after college, almost three years ago. Catholic school's rigidity managed to help people like Biden and I stay more focused and go through the motions to cope, but not heal. The alternative, I suppose, would have been to grow up "special needs" and probably have worse narcissism due to everyone knowing... or perhaps not. I'll never know. But then consider that I am one of the highest-functioning autistics possible, and so imagine what it must be like for those who are WORSE than me... I was spared all the common and nearly-universal symptoms such as meltdowns, so I was very lucky. Joe Biden's certainly an inspiration for me. I also have political, if not presidential, ambitions. While I would not be the first president to have Asperger's (historians believe Thomas Jefferson, John Quincy Adams, Abraham Lincoln, and William Howard Taft had it, while I would also include John Adams, Richard Nixon, and Donald Trump), I'd be the first one to be open about it. By that time, it would likely be less of a stigma. Because Joe's right- there are still a lot of things out there that are made fun of that shouldn't be. Autism, in the end, is just a more colorful and vibrant way to take in the world once it's mastered. I'm a lot closer to mastering it, and I never even knew I had it until two years ago. I'm 25 now.

I don't know Joe Biden that good, apart from that he's a stutterer just like me. As someone who stutters he beat that egocentric screaming loudmouth and ended up being President. Huge rolmodel for everyone out there who stutters. Respect.

I used to be a heavy stutterer as a kid. At some point somewhere after I finished school I started stutter less and less, idk why. But stuttering in childhood definitely fucked up my ability to communicate with people and engage in conversations.

this is such a great speech. i am in tears. i am so proud of him for always standing up and advocating for himself and others. especially children who need to see people like them in media, in society who are unapologetic and successful not in spite of whatever it is that makes them different to someone else. he touches on so much here and his character and soul is fully on display. he's such a lovely person and the exact type of person who should be representing human struggles like disability. you can tell he's all in here. he's feeling what he's saying. he holds little joey so close. i like that he criticised the people who laughed aswell. it was calm but firm. thank you, always, president biden. 💙

Great speech. Did not see that coming. Also, what is the cure for stuttering? (not looking for a 'go to a speech therapist' answer)
@wm9926

Depends on how bad your stutter is. My stutter is worse when I speak in front of groups of people or phone calls, for example, where it's important that i speak properly. I've found, however, that if I go into a situation where I am calm and think about the task at hand rather than on the fact that I have a stutter, my speech flows better. However, it is easier said that done and depends upon the person.

The cure for stuttering is to find your demon, face your demon and fight to control your demon. Don't focus on defeating your demon because he will always be there, he is a part of you. Just go heads on and you'll end up controlling it.
