Interesting video, and nice Aiwa cassette deck. I had an AD-F910 for a long time, replaced the belts in it, too. I have quite a collection of motors out of cassette decks I scrapped over the years. I also keep salvaged belts, but they have to be checked occasionally. It has happened a few times that a salvaged belt decided to start disintegrating, causing a mess...

I've not scrapped any decent cassette decks! I could use a better wow & flutter tape, I'm fairly sure that half of my reading was due to the tape itself. Ever found a good one at a sensible price? Another deck I have which needs belts is a Marantz SD420. I changed the belts in that a few years ago but one is starting to disintegrate again.

@@video99couk Most of my parts stock dates back about 10 years ago when people were throwing out cassette decks left right and center. When there is plenty of fancy 3 head cassette decks to choose from, why bother with slightly broken 2 head cassette decks? Back then I scrapped a lot of cassette decks that these days I would restore... So far I have refused to do any wow & flutter measurements, because all cassette decks inevitably have some wow & flutter and there is only so much you can do to reduce it. But viewers have started complaining about this omission from my repair videos since more and more KZfaqrs feature the software wow & flutter meter in their videos, so I will have to look into this topic. I recently bought a Leader LCT-193D "cassette checker". For setting cassette deck speed I have so far used a 1 kHz cassette I recorded myself, with a frequency generator as the source. I have an Akai GX-75 cassette deck which is direct drive, so I am certain it runs at the correct speed and has low wow & flutter.

excellent job, this deck is rated for 0.018 w&f score you came out with 0.1, what contribution is w&f of the cal. tape? 0.08? That would sugest your deck either needs more attention or find better tape.... to bad, its one of the moste stable machines out there..

Superb deck i just seen one on uk ebay a big step up from my aiwa ad f810 my belts for this deck came from malvern hills audio via ebay .,12 volt vids on youtube uses a 440hz tone and a guitar tuner to test for wow and flutter.

With it been a 3 head deck, can you not feed in a 3150hz signal, then put the deck into record mode (with a decent tape) and measure the W/F coming off the tape as it records the signal??

Could be belt or bad pinch roller. Another possibility is lubrication of supply spool spindle, or failure of the motor. I've had all of these defects between my three Aiwa decks which share essentially the same mechanism.

thanks, usefull video! i have xk 009, after belts replacement on the capstans (identical mechanism) i'm getting clicking and the heads would not go up, f.f and revinding works ok. I didnt disassemble the mechanism or anything further, only the capstans rest bar. Can you advise the reason. May be the cogs under the flywheels should be in a certain position? thanks.

It's hard to diagnose a fault like that by remote control. It's going to take some careful examination and reference to the service manual. Sorry, there's no obvious answer.

Any idea should be current draw of Pacific UCM motor in play mode. I replaced one in Nak DR-2, same mechanism as CR-3, speed still wonders around and slows down once the machine warms up or chassis is closed. Maybe the voltage regulator for the motor section is too low (it uses 2SA1406 200V, 0.1mA transistors). I measured the current draw and it's around 90-100mA, 12.07V, W&F 0.1- 0.15 RMS once it settled down to some speed, instead of wondering in +/-10Hz range. Just asking - possible that the Nak might have other problems causing the speed to slow down - capacitor, contacts, cooked LB1649 motor driver.

The other possibility is that the bearings are drying up. Before I replaced the motor in this Aiwa, I applied a little oil to the end bearing of the motor and that made it work hugely better, proving that it was a motor fault.

If you can't find someone doing a kit for it, I would do an eBay search for cassette belts. Order them based on sizes. Try to get the best you can, avoid cheap belts from China.

I have seen plenty Sony audio equipment that has it's transformer mounted outside the copper chassis, I think that they were trying to eliminate noise transfer.. Those motors buy the way can be taken apart to clean out the old lubricants! It could be a bit fiddly, I think that I saw Dr Cassette do it although I'm not exactly sure or unless it was The Post Apocalyptic Inventor... It was one of those two great guys! It could have saved you a lot of money if it had worked... I would probably say that it's also probably due to have all it's capacitors replaced, well that depends on what this cassette deck is worth to you! It's a lot of work for sure but for some people it's just not worth it! Aiwa made some very good cassette decks, I have one that's in storage which I personally purchased new, I can't remember the exact model, it has the exact same bias adjust setting sticker on the top just like yours! Mine has a lip that runs along the lower front of the unit and houses all the transport controls on it! I stopped using it when the wires that run to the quick reverse head started playing up, I ended up plugging it in years later and it didn't want to fire up anymore so it's still sitting around waiting for my bench to clear up a receive a complete overhaul, belts, lubricants and capacitors! It's from the 90's so it's about that time when manufacturers started cheaping out on components... I will definitely have to set up a camera and post the video, I really don't know why I haven't been doing it already? I literally have a double garage full of equipment and then there's more inside the house! That might be a video all in itself LoL!

The capstan motor on my Aiwa AD-F770 can't be adjusted anymore. Looks like I will need new motor. Where did you order yours from?
@video99couk
@video99couk 4 жыл бұрын
The answer to that is in the video description notes (Pacific Stereo in USA). However it's not cheap, not cheap at all. The F770 is also a bit of a pig because you can't really get at most of the back of the deck without taking the deck out which means a lot of removing of screws. While you have it apart, make sure that the grease hasn't set inside the cassette spool spindles. That can dry up and cause all kinds of transport wow/flutter problems.

@@dimitarkirchevdimitrov6321 If you've done all that already, you know what you're doing with the deck. Yes the motor is very expensive to import. I had a friend in USA help me which cut the cost, but think in terms of around £80 or so and you're in the order of things. You may be able to negotiate a slightly better price, especially if you're already a member of Tapeheads.net. But it really is a decent motor compared to the ones you normally buy today.

I've noticed warble on old vcr linear audio, belts and a better pinch roller didn't seem to do much on the ancient machines. Even newer vcrs with a one peice motor+capstan bar are not free from the dredded wobbles lol. I came to the conclusion that the phospher bronze bush/bearing had wear and allowed the capstan bar to ride around on the bush and not stay dead on 90 degrees. I could be wrong, wery likely lol. Check the fit of the capstan bar in the deck bushing, just a daft thought :-D Sorry about the long waffle.
@video99couk
@video99couk 4 жыл бұрын
VHS and Beta tapes of course run very, very slow, so the linear audio is limited. The servo systems of video are quite complex of course, so you could get warble due to tracking issues, and I've even known a contaminated video head to cause audio warble as it "snatches" the tape on every revolution. With higher tape speed, higher quality tape and well engineered decks, professional BetacamSP gives super linear audio results.
