We really aren't surprised at all that AJ Hawk hates anything that stops the ability for one player to use his helmet as a weapon against another.

At my highschool, we had them for a while, even before colleges were using them because our head coach's son actually died of a head injury in football practice. He had collapsed on the sideline in highschool and was taken to a hospital and they cleared him to play for college. He went on to play for the Naval Academy and ended up dieing from a hit to the head he received in practice. This stuff looks dumb, but if it can save one persons life, I think that's worth it.

this is why eric weddle's comeback this past season was even more impressive than people give it credit for. Dude hadn't played in two years, played in an era where he could take people's heads off, comes in after not playing and delivers clean hit after clean hit, separating guys from the ball with his shoulder (and a torn pec in the SB), and I don't think he ever got a personal foul. I miss the old days of taking guys heads off but I accept the game has changed cause of how fast and strong these guys have become. Eric Weddle after not playing for 2 full seasons adapted seamlessly to the new rules

Avoiding helmet to helmet collisions is a lot easier than you think tbh. Most of the top tier athletes in the NFL didn't have to learn good technique until college at least to be dominant. Not tryna take away from NFL players but watching on Sundays their technique is questionable at best and leads to more head injuries than anything else

Injury prevention Protective equipment-mouthguards and helmets There is no good clinical evidence that currently available protective equipment will prevent concussion, although mouthguards have a definite role in preventing dental and orofacial injury. Biomechanical studies have shown a reduction in impact forces to the brain with the use of head gear and helmets, but these findings have not been translated to show a reduction in concussion incidence. For skiing and snowboarding, there are a number of studies to suggest that helmets provide protection against head and facial injury and hence should be recommended for participants in alpine sports.115-118 In specific sports such as cycling, motor and equestrian sports, protective helmets may prevent other forms of head injury (eg, skull fracture) that are related to falling on hard surfaces and may be an important injury prevention issue for those sports. Consensus statement on concussion in sport: the 4th International Conference on Concussion in Sport held in Zurich, November 2012

I still see the young rookies secondary players lead with their heads to break up pass plays, instead of wrap up guys with their hands, arms shoulders a proper tackling technique.

those look exactly like scrum caps for rugby. It literally has no protection its just for your ears and for the rubbing on the heads when youre in scrums or if you have long hair

AJ the purpose for the covers is to help prevent head injuries during practice so they can make sure the players are safe

Most safety features that constrict you in some way are uncomfortable, but they do heavily research all of this stuff to ensure that it does protect you to some degree. The NFL took a lot of flak for hiding CTE information and for not taking player safety seriously but it seems like you can’t win in this day in age

What the NFL is currently doing is a show, nothing more. They know about the risks of CTE, they know that football cannot be played without those risks and they know that external helmets cannot protect the brain from CTE. They know that football without CTE risk is next to impossible, so to protect profits they play this theater facade game of acting like they are making positive changes while knowing full well that their attempts ate futile.

We used the helmet cushions when I played college ball. They seemed dumb at first because they make you look like a bobblehead, but I think they probably help from the constant collisions. You can’t even tell you’re wearing it!

Willingly taking head trauma doesn't make you tough. And it's not an era thing, never has and never will make you tough. My dad was a commercial fisherman and had a saying that there's a fine line between tough and stupid. Crossing that line to make yourself look tough speaks to insecurity more than anything else

One of my many regrets is not taking my concussions more seriously. It’s something that doesn’t show up right away, but down the road it’s not great.

I think form tackling is the most important thing one can do to prevent head/neck injuries. Look at rugby players for example. They play with no pads, no helmet, yet somehow stay safe. It’s because they are taught proper form tackling techniques when they are young, and if you do not adhere to the form than you are susceptible to get hurt.
