You can’t tell the story of UK Rap without mentioning Dizzy Rascal, Wiley, Stormzy and our guest today, the microphone champ, AJ Tracey.
Born and raised in a street that would provide the name of his debut record’s smash hit, Ladbroke Grove, he’d go on to achieve five platinum singles and 2 billion Spotify plays.
And, he did it all as an independent artist in an industry monopolised by major labels.

When you listen to really talented grime, or not still artists their control or the language is amazing. Really clever uses of the language - AJ is very much part of that group.

Haven’t watched it yet but think Cole did the right thing, it was clearly way bigger than a little rap beef, it was personal, for Kendrick especially, he had the backing of most of hip hop. This was between drake and Kendrick, J.Cole didn’t need to be involved and smartly bowed out.

I think I agree with you, I reckon this was probs recorded before we saw how deep the beef got though. It looked like Cole made a really bad mistake at first

AJ's proper sound, I like his music and don't even agree with all his political views but one of a few U.K artists I've seen grow as an individual, many from London seem to still have the same mindset. He also put on west London massively in my generation.

It would have been interesting for Ollie to have linked the conversation more to the rap background - for example “ok you want to see the juiced Olympics, but how do you feel about rap being competitive with ghost writers?”.

I get thag dissing is part of the hip hop culture but nothing wrong in being real and apologising when you feel you got it wrong. That's real life rather than thinking your fellow artists in the genre are always your competition.

Growing up in central London makes you astonishingly privileged, the opportunities are incomparable to almost anywhere in England let alone the world. You don't get that sense from this interview. Would love more gratitude and less grievance in society, unfortunately the former requires humility and intelligence

another trini, my grandad was from port of spain on my mums side . I disagree with him on the J.Cole stuff though ... why? there was some woke stuff going on behind the scenes with the whole Drake situation if you listen to the woke black Americans they see Drake as the death of authentic hip-hop the leftist(woke) community and conscious rap are definitely linked, they came from the same theory so cole had to back down because the black American community has been trying to find a way to get rid of Drake for a while there were some real hip-hop politics going on behind the scenes with the Drake stuff some people say Q-tip called up Cole and asked him to back down they have wanted Drake for a while you have to remember hip-hop wasn't formed out of gang culture gang culture formed around hip-hop hip - hop was originally the voice of black America and that's why the message by Grandmaster Flash sounds so different from the NWA era of hip-hop which is the start of hip - hop you know but ... wait... your 30 you don't remember De La Soul and Rebirth of Slick - cool like that come on bro like every rapper isn't gang banger thats the code of the streets that's not the code of rap, if you go against the culture you speak for you gotta retract that an that's why what Tom Mcdonals does is blasphemy, it's frickin tragic because he is using the tool of the oppressed to oppress
