Grafting season is back in full force! Yes!
Back in February 2021, I grafted the 'Jan Boyce' Avocado to a random seedling avocado rootstock. I did that by clipping a small stem from the 'Jan Boyce' tree and grafting it to the rootstock.
The scion took a long time to show signs of growth, due to the cooler temps and shaded spot. The results part of the video was filmed April 22, 2021. It took about 10 weeks for the graft to fully heal and begin to grow. Late winter to early spring is a great time for avocado grafting, though have some patience because the graft can take longer to grow out.

I love your videos! Long time subscriber here. I think the misunderstanding is the way things worded. We graft scions or budwood from “known cultivars”,These known cultivars would have to have fruited at some time.... probably way back or how else would you know the variety ? Lol. This said you can certainly take budwood from a young tree that itself has not fruited.... But its genetics are from one that has! I agree, though, its best to graft either ON the main trunk or very close to it on the branch as the scion will be pushed by the main tree to try to replicate the branch that was cut away. If on the end of the branch, the tree may not need to push through new buds, I have used the ends of branches to demonstrate the grafting cuts on large trees, some take some do not. During the grafting process, We are combining tissue of a superior cultivar ( budwood) with a rootstock or seedling to create a new tree. This tree isnt exactly a clone of of the original as we have added a different rootstock to make a completely new tree. Sounds to be splitting hairs... but In my plant propagation class i got the answer wrong when I answered clone. The correct answer is that grafting is a “ transplant “. Anyway, I look forward to your next video. Your enthusiasm is unparalleled! Have a Great Day and Happy growing!

Top-worked an adult Hass seed-started tree I have in my yard in Florida. It has two main trunks so I cut one off. Grafted "Oro Negro" onto a water shoot just as you did here. It took and is thriving! Grafted "Nishikawa" onto another shoot; it took but is in the shadow of the Oro Negro growth. So much fun. Decided to cut the other main trunk and am grafting onto the water shoots this week, just getting old enough to wedge graft them....

Hey AJ! Thanks to you I'm totally into grafting. Remember, You sent me to a place where I could get some para film? Cut to a few months later and I have now successfully grafted a Giant Fuyu to a comon persimon tree and it took. I now grafted some Choquette scions and some Hass to my Wurtz. Can't wait to see how that turns out. I have clay in my yard and was wondering what your views are on mound planting as a solution and if you plan to do a vid on that one day. Keep up the good work. You are so knowledgeable about Avocados, I even suspect you might be the guy Gary, from Laguna Hills nursery might have gotten the idea for using honey water to attract the bees. When watching his seminar vid, he admitted to getting it from KZfaq and I suspect it might be your vid posted on the subject. LOL! 👍

Ajmal, help me out here. If I multi graft my avocado tree with Hass and Fuerte (I know, boring but is what I can get). Will the yield be larger than just having a Hass and spraying with honey? I don't have enough space for a second tree to plant a type B next to my Hass.
@AJTheGraftMan
@AJTheGraftMan 2 жыл бұрын
Yield might be larger, but not by much. If you graft Fuerte to your Hass tree, what will happen is you will get a longer avocado season, because Hass avocados mature in the spring to late summer, and Fuerte avocados mature in winter to early spring. This gives you an avocado season that can possibly last six months! As long as you can attract pollinators (like bees) to the avocado flowers, you should get plenty of fruit!

Hi Emma! It's a good time to graft but you have to be a little strategic. If your tree is in a pot, you can graft it and leave it in shade during the hottest times of the day. Avocado grafts will grow in the shade. If your tree is planted in the ground, you can graft it and protect it with some aluminum foil. I did a video about protecting grafts in heat. Check it out: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pb2qa7FosNGdgJ8.html

Hello Ajmal .... I just discovered you and your fantastic advice and video's, so am now subscribed. I live very near the beach in San Diego so have somewhat sandy soil. I bought and planted 5-gallon 5-foot tall trees ... a Haas and a Fuerte (both appearing to be grafted trunks and neither old enough to have produced fruit yet) in December and they are doing very well, each having plenty of branches and buds developing. Would it be too early to graft a stem from a neighbors Reed and Edranol trees onto either or both of my young trees? All advice is sincerely appreciated.
@AJTheGraftMan
@AJTheGraftMan 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for subscribing. You can certainly graft onto your trees. I would graft onto a branch that is as least as thick as a pencil, but the thicker the branch is better in this case. And, I would graft somewhere near the top of the tree, because the tree naturally pushes a lot of its energy towards the top area, so a graft would likely do better there. Hope this helps

Hi. Thank you for watching. I love Jordan 🇯🇴. In my experience, the best method is the cleft graft (also known as wedge graft or V graft). Since it’s warm in your area, I would put the grafted seedlings in partial shade or indoors in a bright room. Once the graft grows and the first leaves mature fully, they can go into the full sun. Hope this helps.
@hodhod.data.analysis
@hodhod.data.analysis 3 жыл бұрын
@@AJTheGraftMan Thank you too for your kind reply . To my best of understanding from your advice that the cleft ( wedge) graft method would work anytime indoor if the seedlings were in complete shade regardless of the season ( spring/summer) . I will try the wedge method on planted seedlings and wrap them in foil for those in the garden like yours . Last night i tried the bud method and wrapped them with foil too for the scions planted already since a year . I will see how things goes, it is my first experience anyways . I had hoped you're near to donate some seedlings because i propagated 150 seeds into seedlings and they look very healthy different brands but they're gonna need a lots of work the rest of the year . God bliss you and have a wonderful rest of your day . Warmest regards . Mohammad

Just a question as I'm new to grafting, I have several seedlings under 1 year old, which only have the main stem. Is it effective to graft to the main stem before the seedlings branch out. Also I have another tree about 10ft roughly 3 years old, do you need to graft each branch? I have a large avocado tree budding now, which produces good fruit that I'll be taking the grafts from.

Hello I love all the information about grafting avos but my question is how do you make a successful soil for the tree to keep it thriving?? Thanks in advance

Hello AJ, I used your videos and tips to place 6 grafts from 2 different trees on an appropriately 6 1/2 ft., extremely health 1 1/2 year old tree that grew from seedling (without my assistance-just started under a very old tree we lost). 3 of the grafts were very successful, but my concern/question is: should I trim away branches from the new growing graft so that all the energy goes to the new growth or should I leave it to provide shade for the trunk and the new graft growth. Thank you for your excellent instructions.

Hi! I’m glad your grafts took! I don’t understand your question. Which growth were you considering trimming? Is it growth from the rootstock or the scion?

I have a 10ft sterile avocado. The branches are very large. My friend has a Haas that he needs to prune. I won’t get any scion wood the diameter of my branches so I’ll have to go out on a limb. What would you recommend? A neighbor said to cut the whole tree down and stick a haas into the stump. What do you recommend. Get demonstration!

Thanks! I’ve done a video about grafting small scions onto large trunks. Check it out on my channel!

Would it make a difference if I cleaned up the budwood the day before separating it from the monther plant in order to give the avocado a day to close allt he wounds from all the old leaves?

If the scion and rootstock is from a young tree, will it still lessen the time it takes to bear fruit?
@AJTheGraftMan
@AJTheGraftMan 3 жыл бұрын
Should have no effect. Time to bear fruit depends on other factors like how well the tree is taken care of, the weather and the pollination at the time of flowering

Hi Ajmal. I just found your channel. I've been interested in grafting for a while now. I have a very young Avocado tree that I planted from a seed. I was overjoyed when it sprouted. It's still in a pot. Should I plant it in the ground yet now or let it get bigger and how long before I can graft it ?? Thank you for your help.
@AJTheGraftMan
@AJTheGraftMan 2 жыл бұрын
Depends how big it is. In general, you want the trunk to have the thickness of at least a pencil before you graft it. To plant it in the ground, I would wait for the trunk to be at least 1 inch thick. Hope this helps

HELP!! I’m in Texas so when we best time for grafting for my avocado tree? Jan & Feb are usually our coldest months? Also my tree has 2 stocks coming from the pit can I split the pit and separate roots to make 2 trees? Last question tree is about a year and half it’s about 3’ tall I didn’t know I was supposed to cut the top to encourage branching is it too late? Thank you in advance

Great video!!! Someone gifted me an avocado tree saying it's grafted, but aren't sure (they bought it at a nursery). Is there a way to tell? I see a notch on the sapling. There are two other branches that have grown below this notch though. I am wondering whether they should be removed.
