How to Graft Young Avocado Trees 2

These grafts were done in January 2022, which is technically our Winter, however the weather patterns in Southern California this year made it Spring like climate in January. Avocado buds began to swell and emerge from Winter dormancy early, and that is the best time to graft avocado. I show the results nearly four months later, in May 2022.
Grafting is fun, and can get addictive once you get the hang of it. I love doing multigrafted projects like this!!

I plant a tree on my neighbor yard last year, I'm going to graft it this year. my whole plan is: A. I don't have to gift her avocados in the mid term future. B. Her tree is about 10m away from mine, I hope it will help with pollination and get more yield This is going my first graft, so wish me luck! Oh I also saw a tree near the train station that had a great yield, and I have a wild tree growing in my yard that it's actually in a good spot, so instead of killing it may just let it be and see which tree gives better avocados, the one I bought and plant almost 2 years ago, or this wilding.

I had a couple of volunteer avocado trees sprout in my compost pile. So, I grafted both, and a seedling in a small pot, into a sharwil variety and all three took. I bet if you able to get the sharwil onto that multi graft tree it would be great! The Sharwil is one of the best B type cultivars!

Just so happens this tree is located just a few feet from a mature Sharwil tree. I agree, Sharwil is great!

Hey AJ. This information you share is priceless and its so simple..other people want to be so technical but this is very simple. Thanks. I wanted to know if i dont have grafting tape. Can i cover the graft with a plastic packet to keep in moisture?

Your success rate could increase with straighter cuts and grafting at the right time of year. A grafting knife is easier to handle without worrying about cutting yourself due to the harder blade. Utility knives flex too much and give you concave cuts. You could also put a paper bag for insulation if you have to graft during the coldest months. That being said, I do enjoy watching your cowboy approach to grafting lol

Great video, AJ. In your experience, how long does it take for grafted trees to produce fruit?

From my experience with grafting most fruit trees they start showing flowers in about a year and a half or two years. But that is if the tree is well kept and healthy.

Can you give us a link to the exact parafilm product you are using? The link you provided just brings up anything that amazon sells as parafilm, and most of them are not parafilm. There are a lot of fake ones out there.
