We're feeling artsy-fartsy with our new camera, so sorry if this isn't our regular eatyourkimchi-esque kind of movie! We really like how old Korean men get together to play games that - we think - are like chess. Anyone know the rules of these games? Or even what they're called? What's cool is not only that they play the games, but that so many people gather round to watch them play. So we gathered round with them, and made this video. Shot with a Canon 550D and 50mm f/1.8 lens. Edited in Final Cut.

I think it's just the music that creates the mood. These guys are living their lives and hanging with their friends. I bet you their gambling too. ;) When they were kids they probably learned the games from their grandfathers in the park.

I really like the cinematography (I guess) in this video. It looks like a costumer clothed all these men to match a specific color pallet. Really cool.

@jonray107 Actually, we don't ever use auto focus; the entire video was shot manually. We didn't mute the sound because we thought the chatting and clicking of stones was important. When we muted it, it seemed really flat and it music became the sole focus. We're having fun with it for sure! :P

Great shot :) They were playing 장기(jang-gi) and 바둑(ba-duk) at 0:01, the wooden pole says "아마 노인 장기 동호회". 아마 = amateur / 노인 = senior citizens / 장기 = Janggi, the name of the chess-like game / 동호회 = a club :)

@simonandmartina btw, it's called jang-ki and the later one is called ba-dook. jang-ki is considered more of an older generation thing, and most young folks don't know how to play it. but ba-dook is a lot more common(and have levels like in taekwondo!), and there are new paper articles about the championship leagues, and in ba-dook channels they show the games being played. they both require a lot of thinking like chess. Kids go to ba-dook hakwons to learn patience and logical thinking skills.

The one the ajussi's are playing is called jang gi (장기). The pieces are shaped in octagons, the biggest one i know its called janbgoon 장군. The pieces come in 2 different colored writing, one in green and one in red and they have Han-Ja writings engraved ind the center. O-mok (오목)is played with the black and white round marbles (its the same as the ones you play with Go).

Obviously these older men are retired (?). All younger Koreans owe these men much gratitude, for developing S Korea to the point it is in.
