Weird Idea for a draconic race that I had, tell me if you think it's a good one: Flydragons. Each individual Fly Dragon is about 1 cm in length, their equivalent of a breath weapon is Dancing Lights & they act/breed as a swarm exactly as bees do, with a Queen, Drones, & Workers. They have a collective hivemind that grants them sentience, and are highly intelligent as a group with a hive score of 10. As a swarm Flydragons can communicate by chirping in unison similar to crickets to proximate speech. While a hive of Flydragons survives day to day on insects in the area, when it is time for them to reproduce new hives they will consume over 10,000 times their biomass when searching for another swarm to mate with so that each of which can lay their Queen Eggs during this time, which occurs once every 95 years, they will be an absolute pestelence consuming any & all animals they come across after stunning them with the Dancing Lights effect. Once stunned or if the hive is threatened a swarm can do one d4 of damage every turn to any creature with unprotected skin exposed. Once they have consumed this much & found another Hive for mating drones/Queens, they will lay between 1 and 12 Queen eggs that take about 5 years to hatch. These eggs will act as a Month's worth of rations in a bite sized morsel that is only 2 cm in diameter, & will cure any natural disease (and some magical diseases,) of anyone who manages to find and eat one.

I knew a friend who was annoyed by purple dragons because in at least one official setting purple was used to paint an unidentified dragon on wanted posters because no dragoks were purple thus they could convey "All we know is it's a dragon, probably."

For the cobra Dragon i would definitely replace the fire breath with some kind of necrotic breath that starts to dissolve their enemies flesh from their bones.

One of my campaigns had a plot thread where there was a dragon breeding program. We came in contact with a crazy breed of all the chromatic dragons. To this day, it was probably the fourth most memorable dragon encounter we've had.

I've started hunting copies of old Dragon Magazine thanks to you A.J. I hoard Dragon lore like they hoard treasure.

In my campaign the brown, purple, and gray dragons are children of Tiamat who must prove their strength to her to become one with her. Bahamut also has more children in steel, iron, and cobalt dragons.

There is a different Purple Dragon that popped up in at least 2e-3.5...last I know of, it was in the Dragon Compendium though had appeared before it in the magazines. They're the ones that Cormyr's knights are named after, though that was retconned into a black during, I believe, 4e. A "Lesser" Chromatic Dragon, it's major thing was that it was the master of the skies as a dragon, it flies a whole lot faster, higher, and more agile than most dragons, they're mainly nocturnal as well. Visually, other than the purples of its coloration is the far larger than normal wings and slender body.

Didn't know about Cobra Dragons at all, but the image reminds me STRONGLY of Vertigo from the old game "Primal Rage", but with wings. If I remember correctly Sand Dragons are fond of horse meat and fine artwork, makes me think of that issue of Dragon Magazine on Dragon Psychosis.

We need more heroic Dragons who are like Spyro. I like Dragons Dogman Werewolves and Hellhounds and Black Wolf Shuck Ghosts and we need more of them who are heroic creatures for a welcome change to the usual.

Will they serve as hit men, or just be bribed to leave some things alone? 5.) Dose cobra dragon politics revolve around competing to have the best skulls or do they not have any politics at all? 6.) What is the damage type of the Purple dragons breath weapon (and is the exploding stone have a mechanical effect)? 7.) Considering the grey and fang dragons, do you think that tiamat is trying to replace the purple and/or brown dragons to? 8.) Did the metallic dragons have the sort of relationship the 6 chromatic ones did? 9.) Would a red and gold ally against a powerful purple? 10.) What resistance(s) would a half purple dragon get (and is there any other things special about a half purple dragon)? Are purple dragons sterile? 11.) Do brown dragons not use a hoard? 12.) Do they come in to conflict with buleys? 13.) Are there any illitherie elves left or are they all drow? 14.) Do half shadow dragons get the ability to create loyal shadows from those who are killed by its breath weapon? 15.) How did they steal that from the melourgrym? Did they get it to teach them or dissect it, or something else? 16.) Can they take a half-dragon form, or just a drow and shadow dragon form? 17.) Can other hybrids be granted/take similar abilities from them (having the multiple forms, wings at medium size, combining racial features, etc.) or is it something fundamental about them that they altered (like a wizard turning someone into a half dragon)? 18.) 11:20 I was just thinking, of something very evil, If an Encounter is going to easy for an adventuring party fighting one of the purple dragon, have the Dragon use it's breath weapon on large boulders which are super heated and then explode for 8d6 points of bludgeoning damage and possible fire damage. The source of this is the Purple dragon, use Stone shape to hollow out the boulders fill them with water, and seal them back up, then place them around the area as impromptu bombs.

A breath weapon that is a combination of a red dragon's fire and the blue dragon's lightning breath, basically a focused beam of intensely hot plasma. But that's what lightning is. A line of super heated plasma? Lightning is hotter than the surface of the sun.

I threw an ancient black shadow dragon at my players this past weekend as the final boss of the campaign. That shadow breath is nasty. 22d8 necrotic damage will ruin your day.

Thanks for this, I watched it twice and your Yuan-ti video. I statted up a 5e ancient cobra dragon based on this for a 1 shot that became a 2 shot, had it lairing in the skull of a titan at the bottom of a massive Yuan-ti temple of doom. Used some of the traps from the DMG and Xanathars and some of my own. Got to use all the new yuan-ti from Volos and the temple maps. I Had it operating as a prophet of Sseth in the jungles of what would be Cambodia’s equivalent in my world. Had a lvl 20 monk(Grottelon homebrew frogfolk)and a lvl20 Battlemaster fighter(Homebrew Fu Lion man) and a 10monk/10bard( Homebrew Dvati)down it. The fight was tons of fun, thing really mangled up the bard/monk Dvati. The fight was tons of fun. As a guy who catches venomous snakes and other reptiles across the US I found the original source material to be a bit bland. No constrict attack? I also gave it a line attack spit venom breath weapon in honor of the spitting cobra, it smoked the fighter real good. My cobra dragon had 2 front arms, and wings for anyone interested. It was deep underground, bedding on geothermal vents with hot coals on a pile of skull offerings, it had brood guards guarding a clutch of eggs and it had a ship with a massive ballista that the BM fighter was firing. It had suits of armor and weapons as trophies and the skull of another cobra dragon on which sat the Yonaguni(Asian atlantean) relic they sought. The bard sent in an illusion of Yuanti giving it an offering of an urn with the skull of a hill giant king, ancestor of Charlemagne inside. Which the party had earlier taken from a heavily booby trapped room guarded by a Yuan-ti Anathema. We had loads of fun. I had them make these guys for an Asia campaign, I didn’t intend to use Yuan-ti in the campaign so I ran this 2shot as a warmup exercise since this is only their second round of characters they needed some practice as the campaign will be starting at lvl 15.

Would be pretty metal if the Cobra dragon was king killer of the dragons. Had resistance to every type of element and immune to poison completely. It’s breath attack could be whatever element suited whatever Dragon it was hunting and it’s bite had an extremely powderful neurotoxin that would cripple dragons

I had weirder ideas for the the breath weapons when I saw "Cobra Dragons" & "Drow Dragons." That said a Cobra Dragon breathing out a cone of few hundred venomous snakes flying at high speed, & the Drow Dragons shooting out a cone of hundreds of thousands venomous spiders, but that might be a bit "extra."

I remember some dragon breed in MTG where they're basically snake dragons, but their breath weapon is a combination of corrosive acid and poison mist. I think they belong to the Silumgar brood from the Plane of Tarkir.

Cobra dragon lair: an ancient jungle temple built atop a massive tortoise with a surrounding flock of winged cobras for added color. That sounds significantly epic to me.

I repeat it. I DONT get is why Wizards Of the Coast havent included the Deep/ Purple, Orange and Yellow dragons in a new and COMPLETE Dragon/ Draconian encyclopedia book with existing dragons? They could be fleshed out and more so on what little there is on the remaining chromatic dragons. Tiamat had this sister multi head dragon or what Ive read she shunned her or what silly readon it was. Tiamat is Red, Blue, White, Black and Green. The sibling had the dragon heads of Purple, Orange, Yellow, Grey/ Fang and Brown/ Sand. Add Pink in for a bonus. I would by several copies of such a book/ pdf if it existed. The noted dragons plus Tiamats sibling should have been done alredy and deserve more attention. And rounds up all main chromatic colors and then some

I would think that these purple Dragons would develop a lot of fire and electrical spells that would normally cause themselves collateral damage, thus without these inhibitors they could create some devastating storm spells or spells that encrusted the scales in molten lava without any concern for burning themselves. Who needs fireball when you make a tidal wave of fire. Control matters less when you cant be harmed.

Interesting fact: the drow-dragon AJ talks about here are actually the second species to bear that name, having been invented for 3rd edition. The first appearance of the term "drow-dragon" was for a hybrid of drow and *deep dragon*, not shadow dragon, which appeared in the Dragon article "Part Dragon, All Hero" in issue #206 - this was an expansion of the half-dragon race to include both half-human half-dragons (the original half-dragons being restricted to dwarven, elven, gnomish or halfling ancestry when they debuted in Council of Wyrms) and draconic lineages beyond the original Gold, Silver and Bronze.

Well the color Purple is of royalty to many cultures... so it makes sense they are the best of best of the Chromatics.

I’d always thought of purple and deep dragons as the same. Same for brown and sand. I’d thought they were different names for the same beast (like black dragons are also called skull dragons) just with differences between game editions.

Given the purple/deep and sand/brown confusion, I wonder whether it is a possibility that draconic naming conventions are arbitrary. While fives of most common speices of two major groups are agreed upon, rarer breeds could be given the same name on basis of similar traits and be further confused with each other, so one place's purple deep dragon or ferrous cobalt dragon would not be the same as another place's purple blue-red dragon crossbreed or metallic cobalt dragon.

I really like the concept if the cobra dragon, especially fitting them into the ecologies of other creatures like lizard folk and yuan-ti. If I were to ever use a cobra dragon in any of my games or stories, I think I would give it a hypnotic gaze attack instead of the fire breath. But then again, I'm not a big fan of non-chromatic/metallic dragons having "true" breath weapons.

Finally other drows leave the 80s behind. Eberron drows are no longer alone.

I like Dragons especially the heroic Dragons. Spyro Paarthurnax Cynder Flame and Ember are some of my favorite Dragons. Especially Alduin Malefor and The Sorcerer from Spyro Shadow Legacy.

I hope you can cover the orium dragon. I've never played 4th edition, but I love that dragon so much!

I doubt D&D will ever accept this type of dragon, but the Troll Dragon from Willow. I ever really liked this as a type of dragon, but if there is lore on it, I feel I need to know it.

purple many fear it.. it seems hybrids can breed themselves.. as greens can.. i fear purple dragons because they may not just take the best attributes of both red and blues... but may be even slightly stronger due to hybrid vigor know whats scarier than them.. a hybrid between a gold and red .. a near impossibility to create.. if the parent dragons were usual ones..

A Purple Dragon sounds like a hell of a boss fight, imagine having to deal with and Ancient one or if your DM is trully a Greatwyrm Purple Dragon? Alternatively the party may be hired by Dragon disguised, so the party and Purple dragon kill each and he/she then can claim both the glory and magic items.
