My eighth grade history teacher was playing this in class. He asked us if we knew what it ment and we started talking about college. He said his daughter was leaving for college soon and he really liked the song, and it's been one of my favorite songs ever since. One of the best teachers ever, I'll never forget you Mr. Ware.

I was so terrified of going to college and being away from my family so I refused to listen to this because it reminds of me growing up and leaving the nest. Now I’ve settled into my dorm, I’ve gone through a week of classes, and I feel fine and I can listen to this song again without feeling so bad! :) sometimes things aren’t as bad as they seem.

Im 17. I just finished my college apps. Ever wish you could travel back in time to back when you were 5 years old with all your memories again? Just to relive it? When I was younger, I lived in Texas. I have these wonderful memories of building snowmen, playing swordfight with my neighbor with sticks. running around and catching tadpoles in the small creek near our apartment complex. Pressing my face against the window looking at the cows eating dried hay in the backseat as my mom drove past that huge field. Life was good.

Hey, I don't know how you're doing right now (i hope it's better), but I just wanted to let you know that I went through the same thing last summer. At first I was sooo excited: I was going to university, was going to be about five minutes away from my boyfriend who was going to the same school, i was only an hour away from my family but i finnnnally had independence i had worked so hard to prove i deserved and could handle. i was sure i'd have a blast. And then i started thinking about all that i would miss back home, how i was going to miss big parts of my sisters growing up even if they were just a drive away, what might happen if my grandparents had medical emergencies which they had had that year...suddenly, my apt and my college, no matter how beautiful and new it was, was nothing more than something keeping me away from my family. i would cry all the time but would feel so guilty and silly when i tried to bring it up because i was afraid it would look like i wasn't able to handle it and that my parents would make me move back home. i thought i was failing my sisters as a good role model and i thought i was failing my big brother by not being able to follow in his footsteps. i was so miserable. in the end, i moved back home and am now trying to learn how to live with my family again and the guilt and shame left over from this past year. my advice would be to tell people if you're lonely, scared, just generally upset, so you can maybe schedule in more time to see talk to your family/friends and also so you have a support system of people who know what's going and how you're feeling. snapchatting my little sister made me so happy, facetiming the whole family at night did, too. just because you're living on your own doesn't mean you have to cut ties and connection with everyone you moved away from. And if you decide living alone isn't the best decision for you right now, that's okay too. you're not a failure for wanting to be close to people you love. I hope things are better for you man. I'm really rooting for you.

I was at a recent AJR concert with my older kids and this song always kills me anyways, but I was sneaking tears away from my kids. I know this is from the young adult POV, but I can guarantee it's twice as bad from the Mom and Dad perspective. GREAT song AJR! My favorite song of many great songs.

3:45 “I’ll come by when I’m gone” “It won’t be the same though” Oh man, this lyric has me in tears everytime I listen to it. It gives me goosebumps and is the greatest lyric of the whole album. Like, especially around Christmas time. In in my childhood (10-15 years ago) me and my cousins used to sit around, and hang out playing with our new toys or switch toys for the night because someone had cooler toys. But now, like the lyrics read “it won’t be the same though” cuz it really isn’t. Family time was replaced with alone time, and alone time is just being on social media. We don’t hang out as much as we used to. And I’d kill to go back to that time cuz back then, we were happy and we didn’t know it.💔💔

MUSIC VIDEO IDEA: It shows one of the boys as a kid like the sober up video in a plain white space with a box of giant Legos. And a red door high up on the wall (the kids dream). The kid starts to build up the Legos as stairs and the higher they get the older the kid gets. He faces obstacles as he builds and when the stairs are complete he climbs up the stairs and he opens the door to reveal a giant stage and he walks through the door and starts performing like he does with ever show. This song is how I felt when I moved out of my mother's house on that day. I it felt like a dam breaking so many memories and emotions came flooding back I wanted that to stay forever, I ended up staying for another week after I mentally prepared myself I was happy to leave to spread my wings but I made a promise to my mom that I would not forget who taught me to fly.

2:53 I recently went to an AJR concert in an attempt to overcome my agoraphobia, and I had an anxiety attack that led to a shut-down shortly before the concert started (it was 5 hours away from home), so hearing this part of the song at the concert _(in-person,_ nonetheless) hit different. It felt so... personal.

I think this song has been my anthem for the last 5 years, even when I don't realize it. I was in the middle of a "gap year" internship thing when this song came out, and even though I went back home and worked for like 4 years afterward, it wasn't the same. Now this year I've moved out again, across the country for at least a year, maybe longer, maybe forever. I actually had to leave my LEGOs at home (don't correct me you pretentious "it's just LEGO" nerds), and this song has more of an impact now than it ever has. I miss home, I miss my family, I miss my pets, and I miss my Legos.

me and my friends made a pact to never grow up, honestly, it worked out pretty well, even tho I'm 29, all of us have the same innocent fun we've had ever since we were 8, playing tag, prank calling random people, restaurants, hanging out whenever we have free time, considering that all of us are software developers, at least in our fields of software development, we have a lot of free time, we joined the same company, we still live in the same neighborhood, we even made our wives a part of "the boys", I never thought that something like this could happen, when I heard this song, i cried hoping that even though I'm already an adult and still getting older, I remain a kid forever in my heart, and ik that that's pretty much impossible, but at least for as long as humanly possible, I don't wanna worry about anything and just live life to the fullest as I have for the past 29 years of this life of mine. I showed this song to all of my friends too, the 3 of us just cried the whole day listening to this
