Yes it’s a great book! One of my favourite figure artists as well. It took him 2 years to make the book.

Yep 4 years at the Alberta University of the Arts. I majored in illustration and graphic design... such a long time ago now. Yes, you can't go wrong with this one.

No sir I did not. I’d be interested to see it, how it compares. It’s just this one has all the practical theory included and in such depth. It’s one thing to talk about how to paint figures but it’s a whole different ball game when you understand why you’re painting a piece the way you are.😉

I know it is a late reply but for whoever is in the same situation: Kanaev's book is the one which you need. You can find countless videos nowadays on how to do drybrushing, do paint chipping, blend colours and "do not be afraid to boost contrast" advises. But I've never seen anything like this book before: it actually tries to guide you through the approach to thinking, studying materials, light sources, reflections. In some sense in a way great painters of the past have done I imagine. Illustrations and amount of details on those miniatures are mindboggling so it is worth getting this book just for the sake of scrolling through and enjoying the art.
