There was Yugoslavian bolt hold open magazines, that is actually why that type of reload is a thing. Very efficient as the magazine was held open after the last round was fired, the bolt would be held open and then you reload like that, don't need to rack a new round

@@TSKNBgaming Not really that useful tbh. If you cut it based off where it locks back from yugo mags, then flip up the safety, then it will be resting right on the round and has a chance of not feeding. All pre-cut ones I've seen have the notch further back, which gives it momentum to release, but you need to manually pull the bolt back to line it up. Also it's an ingress point of dirt right into the trigger group. I prefer just to use stock safeties.

Pro tip: let the bolt forward before moving your support hand to the handguard. You need a round chambered & your firing hand ready at the trigger ASAP. Just hold it by the locked in mag until then.

Most firearms coaches, in and out of the military will tell you that your firing hand NEVER leaves the grip during a firefight, if I ever had a chance to use an AK I would probably do the same old tilt the rifle sideways and do an overhand charge with my non firing hand.

@@thesaltysailor8035 Iraqi mags were having failure to feed malfunctions if attempting to reload normally so they "solved" it by reloading on an open bolt, and this is the best way to do that

The reason they do this is due to the magazine sometimes being difficult to fit properly while the bolt is forwards. If I remember correctly.

was that an issue with magazines loaded to full capacity? i've seen some ar guys swear by loading their 30rd mags to 29, because that last round can sometimes cause failures, provided the magazine isn't smacked into the magwell with enough force.

@@enasnI99 All I know is that on some pistols this lets you release the slide by inserting the magazine in a certain way, it's a pretty cool trick I guess but I sure wouldn't rely on it.

@@blank-re8qv In this case, has more to do with the problems that arise when trying to reload an AK in a country that has a billion different AKs from a billion different manufacturers and a billion different sources of ammo, and not knowing how well any of them may have been taken care of or what specs they were built to. There's a lot of small little differences that get thrown into the mix and can lead to problems. The full capacity thing is a separate, but still pretty legit issue for certain weapon platforms. For example, I know some folks who were lucky enough to use MP5s back in the day, and they always said to either load 28/29 or just do a full reload regardless of if there's still ammo in the gun, because trying to seat a full 30 rounds into an MP5 that has the bolt closed is apparently a bitch and a half to do properly.

This is not taught but some Iraqis used this because their magazines had trouble feeding when they were fully loaded. This was unusual and it kind of became famous.

Some AK magazines actually do lock back the bolt after it’s emptied, but most by default do not

No it doesn’t, unless you have Yugoslavian mags. Even then, once you drop the mag the bolt slams home, so you would have to rack it again anyway
