Lots of viewers have asked about what rifle they should buy so I decided to give my thoughts and some basic info on the AK Vs AR Vs Mini 14 Vs SKS debate.
All of them are chambered in either .223 Remington/ 5.56x45 Nato or 7.62x39 which are the cheapest centerfire rifle cartridges you can buy averaging around 20 cents a round.
Obviously you will probably have some idea which rifle you're personally interested in but if you have no preference whatsoever this video may help you decide.

I know a guy they had an SKS and he lost it out of the boat in the river and they couldn't find it a year later there was a real hard drought and the river dried up and they found it all they did was cleaning and oiling and it still shoots perfectly that made me very impressed

What about the durability of the machined parts of the SKS vs the stamped steel and "plastic" or the others.... I would rather have a bit heavy rifle that would last since...well just shortly after WWII, than some of the newer weapons that though lightweight might be not as robust. Thoughts? Even that fact that you "had" to throw in the SKS is a testament to its longevity and its durability. Should of also done a field strip comparison. Most SKS guys can break theirs down....if trying...in well under a minute....clean and reassemble...in another "minute". I really dont know what it takes to field strip and clean the other three...(might nice for a nice follow up video to this one)....;) Thanks for the comparison, none the less...

I have a Yugo SKS that I love. I've fired Chinese made SKS's and I think the Yugo's are just made better. I've fired AK's and I prefer my SKS to the AK. I find it to be more accurate than the AK. There are after market parts and mags you can buy to make your SKS "tacti-cool". As for the slam fire issue, you can buy after market firing pins with a spring that can eliminate that issue. I just opt for properly maintaining and cleaning my rifle. You may run into some people that claim you never have to clean an SKS but they're just wrong. WRT to the stripper clips. It all boils down to practice. I've seen KZfaq videos of people running an SKS with stripper clips incredibly fast. I'm getting better with more practice myself. One thing that might help you load stripper clips faster is to pull up slightly on the nose of the top round when pushing the rounds into the attached mag. Ammo options perhaps not as many as the .223/5.56 but you still have options and you can get hunting rounds. I hunt deer with my SKS.

Also you can load loose ammo after the 9th round through the. magazine well just put them in side to side lock magazine in place. Just remember put safety on you have live round chambered. Can last as long you have ammo. The others you have to reload magazines unless you have a ton of magazines or a few 4o,6o,75,or 100 rounders. Just remember you have to carry all that extra weight. This is another way if they're not on stripper clip. This is what the old timers in the backwoods do.

Out of all these rifles, I decided to get one sold to me as a Russian SKS, but it turned out to be a Chinese military model from 1958. It's my first non-.22 LR rifle and a ton of fun at the range. My only real gripe about mine is the previous owner did shoddy work on it. They replaced the wood stock with a broken folding stock that's fading, left the wood on the gas tube, installed a scope mount with mismatched screws, and gave it a rusty 30 round metal magazine that fits poorly. So I'm changing their work for my own stuff. Got a collapsible stock and new 20 round magazines, and I'll give it a new scope mount, sling, and red dot optic. Thankfully no cosmoline in this one, but it was filthy when I stripped it to see the condition of the inside. Guess this is what you get for buying a cheap one at a gun show.

I haven't checked Remington's 7.62x39, but you should check to make sure they're using hard primers like the Eastern Europeans do. All my Russian made ammo is Berdan primed. We tend to use softer primers and that may increase the risk of a slam fire (though probably not a runaway slam fire, which is the worst case scenario).

The choice for me is between the SKS and Mini-14. I live in Canada, so sadly AKs are out of the question altogether and while there are a shitload of ARs up here as well, they are subject to much stricter regulations than other long guns (like only being able to shoot them on a federally certified range). I would go with the SKS myself because they're dirt cheap here (they usually average around $200) and everyone and their dog has one here.

If you get an SKS, I suggest a TAPCO Stock, makes a world of difference and you can still keep the factory 10 round stripper loaded mag with the TAPCO Stock. I removed the 10 round factory set up and I installed a TAPCO 20 round removable magazine and a steel 30 shot magazine. I load the 20 round mag with 20 rounds and when those 20 rounds are gone I reload with stripper clips. I have the steel magazine in case the plastic TAPCO magazine wears out. Can't remember how long I've had my SKS been a long while though.

Not allowed AK's and ARs are a restricted class (bulls*t). Mini 14 and Mini 30 are a good choice for us as well. The mini's are a good alternative to the AR because of the restricted status (minis are non-restricted). The good thing about the SKS is that you can abuse the sh*t out of it and it just keeps working. Good vid, thanks.... For price comparison. No AK, AR= $700-$1500, mini $1000-$1300, SKS $200-$300.

Semi's "generally" require the same licensing as a regular bolt or pump. They are limited to a 5 round capacity (though there are small loopholes to double that amount in certain circumstances). Our laws are a little retarded when it comes to "types" of guns. Its not that they are any more "dangerous" than others we're allowed, its that they scare people (thanks to gun grabbing politicians with the help of a controlled MSM). So, things that are based on an AR platform have further restrictions (even if its a .22) than a regular gun and things like AK's are prohibited because they are the go to gun for terrorism (F*ck me). Interesting enough, the Tavor, CZ858, XCR, M14 and a boatload of others can be had with just the basic license (like the above mentioned bolt action/pump), don't ask me "why". We're not as bad as Commiefornia though or the UK/Australia (or should I say Commonwealth countries). Overall, we're still "allowed" some fun, but, after this Vegas crap, who knows? The gun grabbers are having a field day criminalizing law abiding citizens while doing nothing to combat real crimes. A regular license allows you to throw your gun in the trunk and go shooting where its legal to do so (ranges/private land/crown land). A restricted only allows at gun ranges (all pistols/AR) and prohibited allows you to own (though they don't issue those licenses anymore) and wish you could go shoot them. Those licenses are slowly disappearing as those specific gun owners age and pass on. Then the government confiscates them. Thanks god we've got the government to take care of us and keep our streets safe. What a joke.....

I have used an Yugo SKS for decades. It has never screwed up. But, I do disassemble it and clean it after each use. They have a firing pin that doe snot have a return spring, so if you let the bolt assembly get dirty, the pin can stick and cause slam fires. But, that is usually due to lack of proper cleaning.

And when acquiring an SKS, it is wise to disassemble the bolt, remove the firing pin, and clean out the channel. Old cosmoline gumming up the channel is the usual culprit for slam fires. Most people just spray some brakleen but full disassembly always result in cleaner parts.

I like the old school Garand action with the rotating bolt and the feel of a traditional style stock. Reliability is rock solid and accuracy is more than adequate for my needs. You were not fairly representing the SKS. If you are going compare rifles accurately you should cover all aspects. You didn't test ammo, and it's reliability in each rifle. You didn't mention the Mini-30. The Mini 30 has serious issues with steel case ammo, and the SKS will fire anything reliably. I own all of these rifles, and have for many years. The AK, and SKS are far more reliable than the others. They require less care to shoot. The SKS has a longer barrel making it little more powerful than the AK, and the SKS has a longer site base making it more accurate than the AK.

I found it funny that that after saying the mini 14 was probably not as accurate, it was the only one that you hit all of your targets on consecutive shots. I had a Romanian SKS and loved it. If memory serves, they were that last to manufacture it with the chrome lined barrel. I would love to have it back!

Norinco chromes the barrels. I have one. Some people think Norinco is a second class SKS, but I can’t tell one from the other, at the range.

Great video ... I like my Mini-14 with the Tactical stock as you can add things on rails, etc. My two brothers each have AK or AR and we all think either / or is good. Fun stuff. Side note is I have three stocks for a single Mini-14 and change them to suit mood that day. I prefer the natural wood one.

No reason not to own all of them. Why does it always have to be a question of "either/or"? As far as the SKS is concerned, I've had a Norinco since '91 and shot thousands of rounds through it with absolutely zero misfires or misfeeds. It's rock solid reliable. Rock. Solid.

Good video ! I, too, have sold my AR 15 and settled on the SKSs both: (Chinese & Yugoslavian), I own two as well as a mini 14 just like the one shown. The new Mini 14 is unquestionably more reliable, accurate, better built than any AR sold on the market. count me in.

Ed Stallion WELL SAID SIR! 👍👏🤝 I been trying to tell em that the mini is a tight machined beast. Very accurate. Even the 180- serial number models are very accurate with the Accu-strut. Even gets thru string fire with the hot barrel no problem. I'm looking for an SKS too. They seem to be pretty bad ass weapons with extraordinary longevity. ✌️

I think the AR can be more accurate due to the lack of OpRod and better bolt lockup but I'm not shooting matches nor do I have a match AR
@ashleycalhoun1824
@ashleycalhoun1824 5 жыл бұрын
The AR has a lot less reciprocating components, lot less mass moving along the barrel, can be free floated. Rugers pretty shitty and a lot of critical components have to be factory fitted. Spare AR barrel's are as close to self headspacing as you can get. Bolts can be dropped in for the most part unline any of the other listed rifles. Barrels are no problem to install without power tools. The AR is way more accurate, and equal if just a basic build. I don't know what sort of drug you're on, but the mini 14 is at the best equal for almost twice the price.

Zastava mean actually flag. Complete name of factory is "crvena zastava" mean red flag. The factory still exist an make firearms. Locking bolt in rear position isnt rifle mechanism. It is just magazin option made by Crvena Zastava and fit on all AK platform. Purpose is not fast reload, rather to stay open bolt to cool dovn barel. And this type magazin is made for military only.

They actually made a .308 version called the XGI in the 1980s that they never released. Not sure if it was an accuracy or a reliability problem but they must have had something that wasn't easy to work around with the design.

Gabe Musashi ive been wishing they would make a 357 version of the Mini or M1 Carbine forever now. People really underestimate how nasty the 357 gets out of a longer barrel and while lever actions are fun i think a good semi-auto carbine would be one of the most practical ranch/scout type guns you could buy

Alan Brown , the problem with the high capacity mags on the SKS, is they get in the way, you have to hold the gun sideways shooting prone, or get a short drum magazine.

I am as well guys! Love this channel! My problem is that I want a match grade setup for around the $500 to $700 mark! I'm in love with the mini 14 but also know you can get an AR just as accurate for the same money "ish" . I just had back surgery for a broken vertebrae and ruptured disc that was pressing against my heart. I'm wanting a .223 that's as accurate and reliable and as my "K10/22 with a 22" floating barrel" that's a semi automatic for a truck gun/ ranch / 4 wheeler gun. I'm 36 and been off for 10 months and very short on cash and doctors said no excessive recoil for a couple years. So thinking about selling a couple big rifles to buy me a .223 but if I go with an AR I have no idea what brand or where to start? As far as the Mini 14, I have a couple Ruger 10/22's and if it's anything like those I will absolutely love it! Just need a bit of guidance so I can keep shooting until I heal up! Thanks guys! 🙏🏻😎👨🏻‍✈️

I’d definitely take the sks my 16in paratrooper is more light and portable than any of the rifles and the build quality , reliability, durability and accuracy definitely stand up to the competition , despite the fact that they are more dated they support all sorts of tactical modifications without damaging the original rifles ,and on top of that it’s still more affordable then the competition , I know the prices have really jumped but I’m still seeing sks’s in great shape at gun shows for no more than 350$
