With the present CPU and RAM it would be very difficult to incorporate processing like stem software. Most stem software at the moment all use the same algorithms from the same developer and it’s super intensive on processing power and it has mixed results. So I wouldn’t hold your breath lol

If you’re paying $2,600 for an MPC, you shouldn’t have to also own external gear just to get “warmth”. For that price, you should get high quality parts already within the MPC. Akai is using cheaper parts to increase profits, and as a result are asking customers to pay a premium price, but aren’t using premium parts within their “premium” product. I agree more competition is needed, so that companies do right by their customers.

Some people will never be happy. How much is a 3000 now or sp1200? Lot more then 2500 bucks. Apple to apples man Go get another job and save up and get what’s needed. Do it and stop blaming a company. You want the best workflow and the best audio you gotta get an interface or external gear. If I buy a high end bass and I put a piece of shit amp it’s gonna sound like shit. 🤔 before you spit shit. Pick a new hobby that cheap make paper airplanes or some shit. But if you wanna be serious in the music world today you gotta spend money and it’s a hell Of lot more then 2500 bucks.

I agree with you on the more competition tip, but I disagree on the part about "high quality parts within the MPC." The newer MPCs may not have the warm, compressed sound of the older units, but that's because their parts are more updated, making them capture even more nuance to audio. In fact, it's all in the specs of the devices, 12-bit for the MPC 60 II vs 16-bit or 24-bit for the newer MPCs, would definitely yield a different sound from what you're used to. And even the sample rate would define how accurate the sound is that you capture at 40kHz vs 44kHz. If you're saying you want nostalgia, you can certainly acquire an older unit and get the type of sound you want, or you can shape the clean sound of the MPC with the tools you get. Air Flavor Pro is no slouch in this regard! But it's objectively inaccurate to compare the audio output of the newer MPCs to the older MPCs and look down on the X and its siblings. If you compare the outputs of the MPC to, say, a high-end audio interface, then yes, there may be a reason to say that the audio is not up to par.

I don't think people who are critical of Akai dislike the MPC. They just feel Akai is money grabbing by re-releasing the same samplers rather than improving existing sound and/or software. And some feel Akai focuses more on a quick buck than quality of hardware and software stability. Akai has a very strong and devoted following - and for good reason - but I think a lot of the backlash has to do with some users feeling their brand loyalty is far greater than Akai's devotion to customers. My two cents from the outside looking in.

I think if you take a look at what the cost of ram is for PC parts, especially when compared to what it was a year ago it makes the MSRP that Akai released the MPC x SE at appear unreasonable. No you can't make a 1:1 comparison, actually though I guarantee they paid less than what a consumer would if you could even buy a newly manufactured 2gig stick of ram presently. I'm very surprised they didn't release it with a new upgraded processor and more I/0 to be able to justify that price point.

Great video!!!! There's one main reason why Akai has NO competition is the sampling world. That reason is the "computer". The computer industry has destroyed the standalone sampling industry completely. Once sampling software really caught on, manufacturers stopped making rack samplers completely. I remember a time when all of the big names in keyboards had rackmount samplers. At one point in time, the dream Hip Hop combination was the SP 1200, and the Akai S950 rackmount. Yamaha, Roland, Korg, etc. all had rackmounts and they were all pretty good. Many of them had features that modern day samplers don't even have any more, like "true" variable sample rates. As long as computers keep getting faster and more powerful, then I believe there is less of a chance of anyone really going after Akai's MPC customer base. Personally, I'm at the point, where I view my home computer/setup like a modular sampling drum machine. They say "Perspective is Everything", and, well, that's my perspective in 2023.

I have the sp 404's and a MPC2000xl and i'd agree in the sense that swing on the mpc's making sequencing awesome. What else in the MPC makes the chopping and sequencing better for you tho? I am NI Maschine user, also i love my zoom sampletrek but currently in my sampling process work with AKAI MPK mini and Maschine software when i away my home studio. Because of my Maschine is very heavy for my backpack and also Sampletrek needs power source to run. I tried MPC beat Software with MPK but that DAW has a lot of Flaws and I Can't sample well. One of my Dream Sampler is MPC Live II, But then after tried MPC beat DAW, I need to think again to purchase the MPC sampler hardware when i afford it. I Don't think MPC is the only best hardware sampler because of my Maschine user expriences. You can Manipulate Sample in many different way in just Maschine software and also Maschine plus hardware can do the same as well. Anyway, I am still believe the MPC One is the only one affordable best sampler in market. Anyone know? which one is the best budget professional sampler. Professional :3

I know this monologue primarily focuses on sampling, but I'd like to highlight the exceptional capabilities of modern MPCs as a central component in a synthesizer system. While I do utilize my MPC X and Live 2 for sampling guitars and drums, the majority of my usage revolves around synthesis. This includes harnessing the extensive CV functions, which, believe it or not, surpass most other available options. I enjoy assembling my own synth channels by leveraging instrument plugins like Odyssey and Model D (and soon Juno), accompanied by stacked effects plugins. To enhance my workflow, I assign my preferred parameters from both the synth and effects plugins to Q Links. When it comes to serving as the centerpiece of a synth setup, the competition simply falls short. The CV functions of the MPC X/Live/One are unfairly overlooked. Moreover, if you manage to create an exceptional synth patch, the MPC's autosampler allows you to effortlessly "save it" - it's truly remarkable.

Akai should change the layout of the song mode. Right now, you see a sequence chained to the next sequence to follow-up horizontally. I do want to see the sequence process horizontally, however i want to see all of the sounds standing under each other on the far left from top to the bottom. This is much clearer and easier to read. The Roland Zenbeats daw for the Roland MV-1 has that layout. Once Akai does this for the MPC with an update, it will be a game changer.

Maybe am I a Stockholm syndrome victim but I am glad to be one. Lots of people do not take the time to learn. I think one can spend years on an MPC and still learn new tricks all the time. I feel like I'm going to miss how quick the workflow with the sp404 MK2 is once you have it mastered the most. I can totally see myself picking up another one in a year or two if they really come through and fix all the bugs and hopefully make it where you can choose the step parameters once and unless you change them every time you go into tr rec it will have them set the way you chose before, and that same idea would be so welcome with many parameters on the machine. There's obviously other improvements we'd all love to see, but I think that specifically was probably the thing that frustrated me the most with the sp404mk2. Honestly a large number of the effects I didn't find to be that great. I'll say that one of the delays does nail it's timing in a manner that I have heard in some music yet have not found to be very easy to duplicate. The idolater effect is solid for not making a muddy mess through stacking layers of identical frequencies on each other, the reverb is passable the 303 tape sim is good, but most of the rest feel somewhat worthless. Having a decent spring verb, a sidechain compressor and some modulation would be some much welcomed additions. The roll is trash. Maybe this was user error, but I absolutely could not for the life of me ever seem to get any midi msgs, or midi clock to work consistently, and that was another extremely big point of frustration to me, because I want to have the ability to integrate the other two synths I currently own with each other to be able to both write and preform in real time. I think if you're justifying paying $500 for it to just use it for it's effects that your not being honest with yourself about the quality of effects for the price. The dust collector is not much more expensive and sounds a lot better or the dreadbox hypnosis can be found for over $100 less used or refurbished and sounds great as well although more tame Impala than king tubby. Another multi effects pedal that sounds great and is $599.99 that I feel is supremely underrated is the meris LVX multi-delay/multi effects pedal that offers you the freedom of a virtual modular system with 99 preset slots a 60 second looper, and draws on ideas found throughout meris' whole product line and you have total freedom to build your effects chain in whatever order you desire. Don't get me wrong, outside of the effects that I said that I actually liked I just don't really feel the need to use the other ones. I just think for the number of effects you get and the quality of them in comparison to what else is on the market it's not a good value in that regard specifically.

It has a really nice workflow, has a nice sequencer (though it's a bit rudimentary in places), nice sampler with a few features I wish Akai had, and slicing is pretty nice. What kills it is Native Instruments. They are too slow to update, Maschine+ was buggy as hell on release and had/has pretty awful performance for what NI are trying to do with it. I think the Octatrack is the best hardware sampler, but it depends on what you do with your samples. The competition is really in software. Extraordinary = stuff like Slate + ash Cycles which chops in countless different ways, has a deep sequencer, FX and envelopes. Many samplers in software now are far deeper than an MPC which kind of seems rudimentary in comparison to me. But if you are DAWless only, then I'd combine an Octatrack and MPC. That's my hardware setup at least.

I tried and hated the MPC workflow about a year ago, but I feel you on this video. Too many of these samplers out here can't do stereo, or have limited polyphony, or can't chop, or they're tiny (which can be cool, but not as that bread and butter every day tool). A couple that you overlooked understandably: Roland MC 707 is really a decent sampler if you dig a bit into it: 4 sample layers, decent polyphony, it can slice, it can stereo. Memory is a little limited, but great pads and it does some Elektron step sequencing. Plus the entire Roland best of effects suite is there, so it can sound amazing, and faders for it's 8 channels, so there's a really nice UI once you get the hang of it. Other one you left out was the 1010 Blackbox. Punches above its weight IMO, but you'd want some kind of midi setup to use it everyday. That said, streams from disk, stereo samples, multisamples. And it chops and sequences. No MPC killer, but an honorable mention...

The point you made is the exact reason the consumer should complain... There is no competition to push Akai to do better so it is up to the consumer to do it. Yes, be mad at the competition but when they fail it becomes the job of the consumer to hold a company accountable. You could also view it a different way... the SP, Elektron consumer may want different function which would dictate the company's growth path and changing that to compete may be detrimental to the company. I think the only company that could compete right now would be Roland with a reincarnation of the MV line (forget the MV-1), take the SP combine it with the 101/707 and give it a touch screen???

InMusic has put a lot of R&D into developing the MPC/Force units they are also using the internal company resources to develop on top of the existing hardware that they sell. DJ gear and other audio gear borrows from their more popular hardware. The track they are on now is workstations which they really pushed with mpc keys 61. While it does not match one to one with many of the big boys like Roland, Korg, and Yamaha it comes very close and the workflow being that of the MPC really has put those manufacturers on high alert. They have to improve the workflow of their flagship machines so they can remain at the top of the food chain. I too would love to have a Korg based machine that offers sequencing, sampling, and all the modern things that we are use to, but so far that day has not come. Hopefully this idea that hardware is too niche of an investment will end and we will get more of the things that we would like.

I could agree more with everything you said! I feel Akai has addressed the output issues, 2.10 introduced USB audio interface option. If you want more warmth or higher quality converters to go along with the workflow and sampling the new MPCs have, use an USB compliant audio interface to bypass Akai's converters. Most folks around me were just connecting Tascam Model 12s, which adds faders, but not high quality output. There ARE some great outboard gear out there that also happen to be USB interfaces. I bought a 500 series audio interface that I connect to my MPC One- It's a killer combination.

Great video Marlow. I agree with you 1000%. Being able to work on various machines effectively only makes you better at the end of the day. I too am spoiled in having lots of gear: 8 SPs and 2 MPCs. SPs are great for effects but can feel like toys, and working on the MPC always feels professional even if my beat stinks! Also my beats to me sound more “professional” on MPCs while my beats on SPs sound more “juvenile”. Both can be cool, it just depends on what you (the producer) want. Also the greatest producers we aspire to be like all made their “livings” working on MPCs, and a lot of times that was their only machine. Maybe the exception is Madlib, but even so he still worked on an XL. Last I heard DJ Premier still uses a 60 and is quoted saying Lord Finesse is the king of the MPC. Large Professor swears by the MPC1000 without JJos 😵 the alchemist uses a 2500. I could go on. Sorry for the long comment but everything you addressed in this video I think about daily. Much love man ❤

Very well put regarding the lack of competition. I would straight buy an new AKAI MPC if it would have a better hybrid workflow when it comes to analog & digital. Imagine a MPC XL with analog filters, different sample engines (like the ISLA) and all the great sequencing, chopping and programming. Man, how cool would it be if you could program the analog filtering digital and even save the automations within the MPC itself. You could also integrate an analog synth with a bunch of VCOs etc. which could be controlled via the software and so on. There are endless possibilities. The latest drop still feels like they only designing things for profit though. I bet you won‘t be able to even upgrade to 3.0 once it drops so they‘ll force you into buying the exact same machine for only 2GB more of RAM and the possibilty to buy more expansion packs and software that only will work within their own ecosystem. I hope they proof me wrong tbh..

The last great MPC was the 2500-an old skool MPC modern enough to not be a hassle to integrate with newer gear. I still use mine quite regularly as I love getting grooves going on that thing. I use it make loops I then export. M The modern MPCs are decent units, yes, but they are DAWs in a box massively less powerful than a modern laptop. They don’t have any special sound over ‘in the box’ DAW production. I still want one on some level -maybe a Live 2-but I’m happy enough using a Novation Launchpad Pro as my drum pads and chopping using built in DAW tools.

For sure. Personally, I remember pining for the purely plug-in based samplers back in the day. Cubase had/has recycle, and that was pretty good for its time. But, today I use an AKAI 5000 with an MPD controller, running it through Axis (ak.Sys) on old firmware. It’s all super cheap and simple. I’ve got my turntable off to the side if/when I need it. Nothing fancy, but it’s perfect for my needs. To answer the question, I think most companies find it cost effective to rely on plug-in samplers. Hardware can get expensive, especially when you start to talk about the price of manufacturing.

Realistically the competition is an inexpensive Windows-based laptop. Something like an MPC might have a workflow that works better for some people, but at the end of the day a laptop is by far the most powerful music computer you can get. You can get a laptop for cheaper than an MPC1 that's several times more powerful, and just the wide range of free VSTs you can download are better than anything you could even buy for a standalone unit.

There are definitely a lot of toy like / gimmicky samplers out there. That said, an Isla S2400 crushes a modern MPC in terms of build quality / sound. It's a true sampler that doesn't go overboard trying to strap an ipad screen to a plastic controller. Beyond that, hoping Rossum does something in this space. Could you imagine a modern Rossum Emulator? Emulator 5 rack? Modern E-synth keys? Would be curtains for Akai

100% true for me. I got few samplers and worked with much more (lot of MPC's, SP's, OP's, Roland MV, MC, Maschine, Elektron, Novation etc). Love to use them from time to time. Many of them (due to their own workflow and limitations) forced me to find new ways of thinking about making music and improved my workflow on other machines. But I always come back to my MPC LIVE (which I've hated when I first saw the touch screen... 😂). Is this machine perfect? HELL, NO! 😅 But, in my opinion, it has no real competition right now, as You said. I'm still waiting for some company to make the machine of my dreams. 😁

There's reasons why you're likely to see an Octatrack or Electribe at a rave, just like there's reasons why you're likely to find an mpc in the studio of someone making hiphop. I'd say calling Akai with their MPC top of the food chain a bit too easy, as it depends on one's goals with it.

I hear what you're saying. Basically there is no healthy competition for Akai MPC and it is really dope machine that you can make a track into a song from scratch to finish in an instant. I would say the sampler or drum machine per say close maybe is the EMU SP-1200. Yes it has 10 seconds sample (Rossum has 20 seconds) but still can knock out a track/beat, workflow is slight different to sample, edit & make a beat.on the machine the same with Ensoniq EPS/EPS+16 and ASR/X. Let see what the future beholds for companies to be in competition with Akai.

Nobody talks about it anymore, but I do believe its still a professional grade product. The isla S2400, unfortunately it's extremely expensive. It's basically as expensive as the MPC X SE. But it absolutely has beautiful character. The guy who designed it created it as a successor to the sp1200. The character sounds very close to the character of the SP1200 but it's capable of a lot more than the SP was.

Marlow. In my case, I'm not bothered by whether AKAI has competition or not. I had particular hopes and expectations for AKAI "next release," which would see more of an improvement to the Live sub-line, and an overhaul of the OS, maybe even the introduction of OS 3.0. That is where my gripes came from. Still, after looking at things objectively, I realize that a business needs to stay in business, so they will upgrade only as much as necessary, and incrementally, making sure people keep coming back. Every business does that. Else most would be out of business after coming out with the best all-in-one tool.

I always liked the Roland "Boss" series SPs better than any Akai MPC. I started off wanting an SP12 in the 90s. Back then Akai had the rackmount sampler, and needed another piece of hardware to trigger sequences. I could only scrap dough for a Sp202 back in 1999. And I thought that sampler was everything I need. Turntable, SP, and a 4 track cassette. I'm good. The 303 was so good, just super slow in deleting/saving. The 404 was just a big step in memory space and speed. The 505 was dope, but it kinda took a step backward. But I mean, as far as drum machines, Roland is far superior than Akai. Just from a sound quality perspective. I mean, they invented the 808. THE MOST recognized hardware sound of the genre.

Sounds to me that you've found the perfect device for your workflow which is awesome! Akai has no competition" yes, there are competing products on the market, but if your nuanced point is nothing compares to the MPC, cool, you're entitled to your opinion. But there are other devices that do all the same things, just in a way that does not work for you, but may work for others. "The best sampler in the market" again is this your opinion or are you making a claim? If you're making a claim, you have to first define "best" then back it up with evidence like sales numbers per device. I gotta ask, is this video in response to the recent Akai MPC SE drama?

The thing is dude, and I mean no disrespect, you are in the world you are in, you love samplers, you use samplers in your workflow, etc, and most of the people watching your channel love samplers, but you need to open your eyes. The ratio of people using hardware samplers compared to software is very one sided. Companies R&D departments have budgets. Hardware samplers are just not as profitable as software. Native instruments for example make way more money from software than they do hardware (they have said it themselves). Despite the world you are in personally, where hardware samplers are a massive part of your daily life, they are just not as popular as you think they are dude, unfortunately. They are very niche, and niche does not make a ton of money. I think your vision is a little blinkered. And again no disrespect, you did also just receive a free unit from them. It is hard to take what amounts to a paid partnership video seriously when it is championing the company that gave out the free product.

Agree. In my opinion Serato Sample is the best sampler in the world. But the reason these dudes like hardware samplers is also because they impose a particular workflow. There’s an elektron and mpc workflow for instance. At the end I find it very unproductive you can replicate every feature of every sampler on a lot of DAWS without having to use a limiting clunky method.
