Here's the new AKAI MPC tuner & amp sim in action for the 2.11 firmware OS update. I'll show you some extremely basic tips on how to use a guitar with the MPC. That includes using it in standalone with & without an audio interface. I'm very excited about the future of dawless production. The new firmware update's coming out June 23rd 2022!

With guitar signals and MPC, there's two different things worth thinking about. One is about signal levels, and the gain needed to bring them up. The other is about matching impedance. With signal levels, depending on the pickups, instrument will level will be quite a bit lower, or just slightly lower than line level. With your average single coils, maybe like those in this video, it could be around -15dBV compared to line level synth for example. So you might need to max out the input gain stage. With hotter pickups, like high output humbuckers, you might only need to crank the gain to medium-high. The second thing is impedance matching. An audio interace with a high-z input will have a 1 mega-ohm input impedance, which is what a guitar likes to be plugged directly into. But these MPCs have low impedance inputs (probably tens of kilo-ohms). They'll sort-of work at a push, but they'll mess with the tone. Connected directly to a low impedance input, the guitar tone will usually get a dull high-end. Like it's rolled off with a low pass filter. But the good thing is that the right guitar pedal can fix both of those issues. Most guitar pedals will have a high impedance input, and low impedance output. And for bringing up the signal to line level, a booster pedal will solve both issues. I'd recommend something like a TC Spark, Mooer Pure Boost, Xotic EP or RC Booster or Keeley Mini Katana in front. This works well, because you get the right impedance on inputs and outputs. And depending on the pedal, you can even have some EQ controls as a bonus. Something like a Keeley Compressor Pro can also work well. Another good option is a cleanish transparent overdrive. I use a Caline Pure Sky for this ($30-40 clone of an MXR Timmy). That gives you basic bass treble EQ, and it can do clean boosting. But with more gain it can also be set to thicken and warm the sound, or give a little mild crunch. If you crank the gain, it can go all the way up to nice gnarly but transparent analogue overdrive, that'll tend to sound better than the MPCs overdrives. Caline also have a dual pedal that's a Boost (Xotic RC booster clone) and (Diamond clone) Compressor in one cheapish $80 unit. Another good option is an Audient iD4 mkII or EVO 4 used as external audio interface for the MPC. Audient's JFET D.I.s are nice.

I love this, Ave! I'd like to see you go even more in depth with the different guitar head types and tweak. I also would love to hear how these amp sims work on either toughening or warming up synths, drums and maybe even some vocals. I bet even some analog bass through those things could be cool, maybe copying a bass line to a 2nd track and then using the amp sims just on the copy for some parallel processing.

If you’re not using an external interface that has a “guitar” option or “low-Z,” you’ll still want a DI box with this for serious guitar recordings, unless the new update allows for impedance change. The MPCs inputs are at line level and electric guitars/basses are at “low-z” level. The main point of a DI box is to change the impedance of low-z type levels to line level so they can either be plugged into an interface or mixer for recording. You’d be ok even with just a passive DI box as long as your pickups aren’t active. Sick guitar too. I really dig a matching headstock. Also, I had no idea you could play! Nice job as always.

Interesting if you could elaborate on looping workflow. I've tried populating drum prgs (1,2,4,8 bars) before recording loops. Is there a way to set warp always on? I'd like to do my intro in one tempo and then change it, but editing each pad is bad during live. Another problem is there is only resample and in 1/2 selector. But what if I wanted to loop specific instrument? Say I have 8 keys programs and 8 drum programs ready, I just need to perform them into looper. At some point it all gets too messy and unmanageable.

When they bought Air Instruments or whatever the company was called, I knew they have an Air Guitar Amp Sim, and I checked out the sound and sounded decent. I suspect this is the same plugin. Sounds good, especially through a sound card (which has a dedicated hi-z input for instruments). Question: Can you use the audio interface inputs, and monitor throught the MPC outputs?
@mindajuk
@mindajuk 2 жыл бұрын
on my mpc one , when i choose looper it automaticly sets input to 1/2 stereo. and if i chage it to mono (guitar) then if i go and mess around with a sample or want to export it ,when i go to looper it jumps back to stereo 1/2 . so it's real pain in the ass for live situations. I can see that in this video you have input 2 , but it doesn't jump back to stereo input. Maybe theres something i need to change in preferences ?

I’ve been using my mpc one to record guitars for a while now but even though the new plugins look interesting, going direct sounds pretty awful ! Using a preamp or a modeler (I use a Kemper, but there are other and more affordable options) is the way to go. Also, after recording a loop, you can export it as a sample, chop it into slices, tweak them and flip them however you want and that’s where using the mpc really makes sense I believe.

It makes sense that the tuner would work on any monophonic source, like a bass, or a vintage analog synth. If you know which note of the singer's phrase is the tonic, it should probably work on an a cappella vocal too.
@MasaTheSlayer
@MasaTheSlayer 2 жыл бұрын
@@peterkadarmusic9728 yes sure, maybe I phrased my self not so well. What I would like to see is some kinda key-detection on sampler or rather sample edit mode, so you can get right key for sample from the start when you chop etc. Again not sure, but i think there you don't have effects, so it might be that you don't have then tuner either.

Thanks! the mpc inputs are not for High Z instruments, it will make it sound dull and with less clear high and lows. (input is for line level impedance). You could use a external preamp, with High Z instrument in, and line out. Or what you correctly showed, a USB sound card with High Z input. The sound was definitely better. But, taste differ, if you want to go directly into the line in of the mpc, it won't harm your devices, just your ears ;)

You do not have to use the looper, you could also use an audio track! You can have up to 8 audio tracks, using the looper and bouncing the sample and creating programs puts your licks/loops in one spot, saves your audio tracks, and helps free up ram. Plus since they’re all bounced out, you can go in sample edit and chop them up and create new programs if you wished.
