Nah, therapy wouldn't have helped him. The thing about therapy is that for it to work, you have to want to change. Akechi didn't. His only regret is that his plans failed.

It’s kind of hard to judge the person he’d be in 2 years when we’re only seeing him deep into an entire conspiracy that would kill him for going turncoat or when he believes he’s already dead. The whole line about saying if only he’d met the protag/akira earlier does at least imply that if he’d had another choice at some point he may have taken it, so without Shido/the conspiracy around and him not believing himself dead then it’s kind of hard to tell what he’d do lol. At the points we see him he believes he has no future, so what good would considering how he could live a better life be do for him, you know?

@@helpihavebats6392 Yeah I mean I'm sure that's what he tells himself :P In all seriousness though Akechi is hardly ever honest with himself and multiple things can be true at once. I think on both a surface level and on a deeper level he doesn't care about her other than as a team member, but it's bc he's shut off his empathy for so long and so convinced that he's dead that he's not thinking about anything except defeating Maruki. And the rest of his trauma prevents him from creating any meaningful connections with others. But on an even deeper level than that, I do think Akechi has some level of care for Sumire, realizing they're similar people with similar struggles. But he doesn't let that grow beyond an intellectual level. And I'm also sure that Akechi judges her for being "weak" for giving into her suffering when he "didn't" (which ofc he absolutely has given into suffering but in his own way where he defines himself by it, he's so familiar with suffering that the idea of happiness is terrifying, he identifies with his suffering and thinks he can't exist without it to an unhealthy degree. I'm not saying that Akechi should be okay with Maruki's reality--I'm not either. But his aversion to it is on another level. Regardless, this is a whole tangent. Whoops.) Really, I basically just think that Akechi deep down at the very least has the potential to care about Sumire, and that there are small seeds of that in the game itself, but it's never explored bc of how traumatized and fucked up he is during third sem after losing everything. Sorry to write a whole meta. Oops.

I’m not sure they really improved it, they finally gave him more focus and development. Some stuff we were told in the vanilla game were added fully in Royal. We can thank the Japanese best character polls for adding more content in that way. But I agree, I wasn’t into him until Royal.

@@helghast_7203 P5R contradicts that rule, actually. Which btw you absolutely should play it though, the new Goro content is immaculate. In my Palace AU there is a reason Goro can have a Persona and a Palace at the same time. It's not 100% consistent with the lore but I think it works well enough. Apparently he was supposed to have a Palace in an earlier version of the game, but since his character kind of requires him to have a Persona it makes me wonder how they explained that originally. Maybe the game was so different then he didn't have a Persona yet? But who knows really.

Akechi is my favorite character too! I would want a redemption arc for him post-Royal though. It would be very cool to see a more healed Akechi who has grown up and gone to therapy in another game, see what he's made of his new lease on life. But of course I never want him to completely lose his edgier side :P It would be very cool to see him in P6!!
