u have to touch the metal on the smartphone pen/chip grabber so electricity from your fingers gets transferred to the thing (i think im far from an expert)

Correct! It's because it's conductive. You need to touch it to add the conductance to the nib. Most tough screens now act on the conductivity of your fingers which is why water on the screen can make it hard to use (like when it's raining)

Aki!! The reason the smartphone pen/potato chip grabber didn't work was because you needed to grip onto the metal parts on the sides. Your skin or blood has metal/ iron in so it is able to link to circuits. Hope this helped, thanks!

9:30 You see those metal bars on the sides? You're supposed to hold them so the electrical current can go down from your fingers the tip onto the iPhone for the stylus to work. It works the same with a pencil if you shave down the sides to expose the lead.
