I remember getting to hold the actual animation cells 10 years ago. It was amazing to see all how all the different layers were stacked, the airbrushing for the lens flares of the lights, it was so cool.

@@JPSOUSAdesign That's amazing! It was at Anime Weekend Atlanta back in 2011, they had an exhibit hall that was all about the creation on Akira. The people that were in charge there allowed myself and my friends to hold a few of the cells and explained how they were used and all.

The cels becomes glued once they get attached for too long. I have Akira cels from the ending battle and they are completely stuck together, can't get em to separate even if I tried

OH MY VERY GODS THANK YOU... I rented this with my friends in Austin Texas sometime around 1998, watched it, and never forgot it. I love this movie, and getting to see the behind the scenes makes it even more interesting to me. I’ve read the manga and it does help make more details that were lost in translation from page to screen.

I still own the first vhs American version. The voice acting is so much better than the DVD version and I wish they would have the original (English) voice acting as an option for a new release.

They do on the Blu Ray which was released 9 years ago and the recent 4k has it as well. Look in the settings, read the back of the box, the old dubs on there. And don’t say it isn’t, I have the Blu Ray and it’s there and all reviews of both the Blu Ray and 4k say it’s there. Also, the old dub is bad.

Japanese voice actors are so passionate. That original American dub is just horrible. Im amazed the movie got so much succes using that. It almost turned into a joke... They did a better job in the newer version. At least they were trying to act. I don't get how people can prefer the original dub since they clearly just read a script and didnt care about anything else like syncronizing mouth movement. Nostalgia I guess...

The Pioneer version didn't just "did a better job" or "least they were trying to act" they ACTUALLY did a fantastic job and an amazing vocal performance for the film. Anyone praising the streamline version is BADLY blinded by nostalgia to spew that rubbish as there are some saying horribly dumb claims in the comment section right now about it.

@@Gadget-Walkmen If you're a hardcore anime fan, you're going to generally positively respond to the Pioneer version because it's more faithful to the Japanese version. If you're a film buff, you're going to generally positively respond to the Streamline version because it's better acted, more quotable, and just more entertaining.

They did a lousy job and boring, phoned-in performances for a product created solely to enhance sales of the DVD. I saw both versions for the first time in 2007. I saw them practically back-to-back and spent way too much time comparing them. Trying to dismiss praise of the Streamline version as "nostalgia" is a bad, dumb, rubbish argument. I didn't grow up with either version. The Streamline version is just better.

Oh man... The cursed Streamline Dub. Nothing but recycled Robotech actors. Streamline was Harmony Gold's second attempt at defiling anime.

Ironically, the original dub was actually produced by the Japanese, by Kodansha, who published the original Akira manga and was part of the film production committee. Many of the same actors that had been involved in Streamline Pictures dubs were cast though in it.

No. Streamline did their own dub. For the Pioneer re-dub and re-release, they included the Kodansha dub as an alt audio track, along with the original JP audio and re-dubbed EN track. The Streamline one was Streamline. That's why it's total shit.

Couldn't help notice how young all the characters are. I know that the japanese are into younger "heroes" and also that it's make belief, But does anyone else think it'd make more sense if they were all late teens? Or early 20s? Just saw the part were the 17 year old get their shirt pulled off, no one else find it weird? Amazing anime though I guess.

I've been told that these type of caracters are the most "profitable" in the industry. Screenplays target the most susceptible teens\young adults, as they are the ones who can relate the most with these (we all have been through this,I'm sure...). And most important of all, teen consumers are the most demanding ones! That's why there are so many contents made to this audience.
