Two breeds that constantly get muddled up is the Akita Inu and the Shiba Inu. Both highly regarded Japanese dogs from the same distant family. Their faces are the same and often their colours, so how can we tell them apart? Anneka explains the fundamental differences between both the breeds, looks, character and history and whether it is true that both breeds have a reputation for being feisty, independent and reactive.

@@sixteezchild i made that remark a year ago. Soon after that we got a new shiba, a male. It is a very sweet boy, very loyal and social. But it’s a handful. Walking off leash is impossible, he’s is much too wild and he almost doesn’t listen. He is also very strong and dominant with other dogs. The female was much easier to handle, she was calm and thoughtful. Keep this in mind when you buy a shiba. As a breed they are a bit different, both male and female. I love it, but some don’t. So I would watch a lot of videos first to get the idea. I hope you find the right dog for you!

I will always have a soft spot for the akita inu. They are basically samurai in dog form, regal and stoic. I remember back when I attended art school, one of our life drawing models had a rescued akita inu that would pose with her. It was cutest thing. He wasn't fond of pats from strangers (although let me pat him after getting to know him), he always took the time to look around the room and inspect our work. He was good boy.

Mispronunciation of "Inu" aside, the information given of the two is quite accurate. I cannot stress enough that these breeds are NOT for first time casual dog owners. The breed is so intelligent and in tune to humans, they will walk all over the aloof owner. Proper and consistent training and early socialization is a must! Along with their smartness, they also have a high prey drive and unlimited energy level. The Akita Inu's look may seem passive but they are always on alert with being territorial and can strike in a blink. An untrained and unrestrained Shiba Inu can get away from you very quickly and with that high prey drive, can be blind to harmful surroundings while chasing prey, i.e., streets and deep waters. Nice job!

So many dogs share similar traits that one may say these descriptions sound like many other dogs. Indeed they are so i would like to add what seems to be unique to shiba from my experience. 1. Quirky. They have a busy mind and will pursue things to entertain themselves, often regardless of if you are around or not. 2. Love their toys and problem solving activities. 3. Trainable but can lose interest and have time limits. 4. Need a purpose for doing things. If it just to amuse you, they won't. They must choose if the activity has merit. 5. Love their house, often more than outside. 6. Respond extremely poorly to discipline. Tug on the lease and the shiba will lay down. You may have to carry him home. 7. Quite affectionate but also introspective and fine with their own mind. 8. Highly inquisitive, like a cat. Everything will be investigated in the house. 9. Good apartment dogs but they need their toys. Anything can be a toy, a towel, a sock, a plastic coke bottle. 10. Respectful of your space. They wont wake you up. 11. Maybe courageous at times but also crybabies. They have dainty feet and use them similar to a cat. I think they fine for first time owners if you want a slightly different dog. If you want a slathering fetch dog, not the right dog. As with most dogs get them young so you can learn their personality. They are clean, handsome, elegant, not noisy and not bad beggars for human food. compliant with grooming, nail clipping and toothbrushing. Sporty people may not find this breed to their liking. In asia they call them cat dogs. I have not seen separation anxiety. They can be fine alone.

@@potatoheadhaoy If I am not mistaken (Japanese beginner learner) this is because inu and ken are two different readings for the kanji 犬. So 柴犬 would be shibaken and 犬 would be inu. If I may ask you as a native speaker: How much does it bother you if Westeners pronounce inu like inyu instead of inu?
@user-ye2ei6xq2v
@user-ye2ei6xq2v Жыл бұрын
I’m Japanese. Majority of Japanese people actually think the same way as Dirk-san wrote above. But, believe it or not, the formal names of Shiba-ken and Akita-ken are Shiba-inu and Akita-inu respectively. And more surprisingly, other dogs are called -ken such as Kishu-ken, Kai-ken etc as the lady in this video pronounces. The reason is that 柴(shiba) and 秋田(Akita) are pronounced in kun’yomi which is Japanese original pronunciation (Yamato kotoba) so the following word, in this case 犬, is also pronounced in the same way, while Kishu, Kai and others are pronounced in on’yomi whis is Chinese-ish way of pronunciation. If the fomer word is pronounced in kun’yomi the latter word 犬 is also pronounced in kun’yomi as “inu” (not inyu btw), and the former word is in on’yomi the latter 犬 is also in on’yomi as “ken”. 1. kun’yomi + kun’yomi 2. on’yomi + on’yomi That being said, this rule is not 100% followed. There’re actually many exceptional words like kun + on or on + kun. 😅

I live with an Akita (Japanese) red and white...Musashi. He is the most kind and loving dog I ever lived with...So good and loving to my daughters and so protective to them...a true treasure to our house... Yes...they get sometimes really competitive and violent to other dogs...but if you pay attention to the dog and you soend time with them you get to know each other and as they grow up, they know what is expected from them... And...I love the way they are indipendent... And for sure if you are out at the ooen...you get a bit stressed to take him off leash...first...they have a great ability of smell and tracking down animals and odours...and...they tend to getting into trouble... although usually they make you get in trouble as they are fearsome fighters...oh well...fighting is in their nature....

Absolutely love that video. Many videos give a false image of these breeds therefore most uninformed people think they are super cute cuddly dogs. It breaks my heart when people get a shiba or akita just because they look cute, but then struggle with bad behavior and end up giving them away. I have 2 shibas. One is a total loner, doesn’t like other dogs and people and doesn’t like to be petted but has a very calm personality. The other one is the total opposite. Very outgoing to other dogs and every person he mets and sometimes likes to be petted. But both definitely more like a cat then a dog 😅. Once settled in a family, they are very loving and loyal. Even tho sometimes it can be frustrating when they don’t listen 🥲 still can’t imagine my life without them they bring so much joy 🥰

The two pictures at 9:26 are good examples to tell the face of Akita Inu from that of Shiba Inu. Akita has a more round face than Shiba, has a shorter distance between the eyes than Shiba, and has less pointed ears than Shiba.

I have owned 2 Akitas. They were both fantastic dogs. I loved the fact they are fairly nonbarking. I knew that if they barked investigation was warranted. I love the Woo Woo Woo they produce when happy! Both of mine lived with other breeds of dogs all female. I prefer Female dogs. They lived with cat also. My second Akita would wag her tail at the cats and they would nap together on the same bed. On the negative side, shedding is extreme, but unlike other breeds it seems to shed in clumps and faster. I currently own a GSD both breeds are very intelligent and easy to house break. The GSD has way more energy and easier to train. Akitas will learn but sometimes it's on their schedule not yours. I love both breeds and plan to get another Akita when the GSD is no longer with us. Great video by the way!

I would love to have a shiba. But akita’s are not aggressive, they are just dominant. A shiba can be off leash, you need to train them to choose you every single time in any situation. They are not for everyone, most people want a dog because they are going for looks.. We even pick our dogs because of their looks. Rather look into a breed, what does he need? Is his energy compatible with yours? Can you fit into HIS lifestyle? I hope people will think about this a lot.
