Akoyas are round because they're bead nucleated and often coated with a thin layer of nacre... while freshwater pearls are typically not bead nucleated, hence their "less perfect" shape. Most antique natural pearls that were owned by royalty were not perfectly round either.

Oh I thought you are only in Quora. Weird. Anyway, I think it is unfair to compare the two. The quality control of akoya is high. Any imperfections are checked and pearls are destroyed. It is wrong to compare the two based on shape because Akoyas can have imperfect pearls. Also, both pearls are bleached.

@@myIGbin24h - Yes, Akoyas are heavily treated and have very thin nacres. By the way, what's your username on Quora?... it's pretty weird to encounter you here, of all videos, we meet on this random video about pearls that barely has any views.

If you're after high luster, then go for Akoya pearls, but if you're after solid nacre and affordability, then go for Freshwater pearls.

The best pearls are imperfect

Akoya pearls dont last generations like fresh water pearls do. A very expensive Akoya pearl would only have a layer of nacre of only 0.8mm (similar to all other types of salt water bead nucleated pearls), thus rendering it very susceptible to damages from wearing, sweat, weather, etc.

The Akoyas give plastic shine and are NOT strong and WILL chip away. The freshwater gives natural shine and the nacre is thick and will last forever.

I wouldn't think of paying for Akoya pearls; just too much $. On the other hand, I have a treasure box full of freshwater pearls.

Indeed akoya is a ripoff. Too expensive for nothing but a thin 0.8mm of nacre. Very susceptible to damages etc. By the way, the only way Akoya is so big and round are because they're bead nucleated.

pearls like the freshwater do become more Lustrious over time by being worn!!!! Where as a beaded salt water pearl Can turn back into the most likely. Coral bead, it was made from. And the nacer can wear completely off and it will no longer be a pearl!!!!! And if you're going to buy salt water pearls that are beaded I would just go south sea or tahitian!!!
