watching that new exhaust get installed was like the money shot on a xxx video hhahaaa...turned out super clean...i didnt care much for the carbon sheild but it such a small piece it doesnt take away from the look...maybe paint it the same color as your wheels. another awesome vid by van....make some t shirts for your subscribers to be able to purchase that would be neat.

Hey Van, love your tutorials on the R1. Been using them when working on mine. I know this vid is old but i have a question. Got a m4 black ceramic slip on currently on the R1 and finally ordered the m4 mid pipe. I was hoping it was gonna come in this week but the shop I ordered from called me saying they're on back order and wont be shipping until october. They have the akra link pipe in stock and could be delivered to me next week. Do you know if the akra link pipe will fit the m4 slip on? Thanks.

You do not have to get the bike tuned if you are happy with it's performance after the install. After you install it ride the bike enough to know if you are happy. If you find yourself wanting more get the ecu flashed. - Van

No you do not need to install a Power Commander, especially not if you intend to have the ECU flashed. For the R1 flashing the ECU is the way to go for sure, it makes a huge difference in the performance on the R1. We do not flash the ECU for you but we do sell the kits. I recommend getting the Bench Tune Kit that allows you remove the ECU and flash it at your computer. Super easy to do and you have the kit if an update comes out you can reflash at no extra cost. hey van I went and got it tested with the graves 3/4 ecu map it came out to 180hp to the wheel. so I went with a flash tune and PCV with a custom map. 184 hp to the wheel.

Yeah. Very big difference. There were a few lean and rich spots on the graves map that wouldn't allow him to adjust them, so we went with the unrestricted ecu flash with the PCV to get better numbers. Stock wrhp 167 now 184.9hp (185hp).

Hey Brian I got the hotbodies sets installed awhile back and the support bracket doesn’t quite line up with the TI system. It’s stable up and down but has a little play left and right. I am concerned about track tech and what they’ll say so is there any other bracket or support piece u guys know of that would help?

You should not have any trouble with tech as long as the lower is not falling off. If you need to make a bracket grab some flat aluminum stock from a hardware store and bend one up. - Van

Does the system that you link to on your website include the mid-pipe that takes the place of the muffler box? Or is that a separate purchase? The pics on the website still have the muffler box on the bike (Or at least it looks like that).

I would do an ECU flash on the R1. Important to know you can ride it without out a flash or Power Commander. If you are happy with the performance then leave it, if you are not then take the next step. The only thing you will have to do in that case is install an exhaust servo eliminator. - Van

Hi First of all thanks for the great videos. I have a question for you. I have a 2016 Yamaha R1 60th Anniversary with a Two Brothers S1R Exhaust. I have had the ECU flashed and tuned but no matter what is done on the ECU there seems to be a hesitation, flat spot at 4500 to 5500 rpm. Any idea why this might be happening?

@@gunnyairsoft4359 I used the FTECU kit on my R1 and can tell you the power delivery was great, zero issues. I would start by taking the bike back to the tech who did the flash and let him know what you are experiencing giving him the opportunity to correct it. Would also suggest asking what he used to tune the ECU, both brand and the name of the file used. - Van

Hi Van thanks for the reply. I have been back and forth many times to work with the tech. He is a great guy was wondering is it necessary to use a Power Commander with this type of aftermarket exhaust? When he was tuning the bike he did mention that the ECU was a Japanese Model. Don't know if this means anything. I will need to look at this FTECU Kit to find out more. Did the kit resolve any lean issues with fuel delivery? The only issues that I am seeing are flat spots at lower rpms in all gears and modes. When you open up the bike there is lots of power. More of an issue when driving in traffic. IMO there is no need for a custom tune for 99% of the riders out there. If the motor is stock and all you have done is install an exhaust system etc... the unrestricted files from a company like FTECU work great. The R1 is such a popular bike the files FTECU have available are excellent. - Van

I hear some people say that they get off clutch low speed throttle issues without a Flash or Power commander when they do a cat delete with slip on? I want to do a cat delete and wouldn't mind a tune but I have a new bike with a 5 year warranty and don't want to void it with a flashed ecu

I rode the R1 (and several other bikes) after installing an exhaust system before flashing it or running a fuel controller and never ran into anything that I felt was unacceptable. The only way to know how you will feel about it is to install the exhaust and ride the bike. Odds are you will be good to go. - Van

Hi Van, you probably been asked this before, but do I really need to remap the ECU once installed the exhaust? I don't mind the backfires. Or, is a remap necessary for other reasons?

+Sergio Deluca I have installed several exhausts on bikes and never remapped them to be perfectly honest with you. End of the day without remapping you will not get the maximum benefit from the improved flow. To date I have never seen an engine damaged when someone installed an exhaust without remapping, still it is possible in theory and we need to say so to cover our ass. - Van

Does this exhaust come with a db killer option? I plan on using it combined with a de-cat Y pipe to create a full exhaust.

Hey brian, i noticed after i installed the akra linkpipe whenever i turn ignition a red warning light comes up, after i fire the engine up it dissapears. Any ideas? Eed warning light doesnt come off unless i fire the engine up. Checked the manual and it points out to oil pressure and coolant. Coolant is ok. But the oil pressure not sure. Oil level is ok. No orange check engine just the red warning light. Any ideas?

Man it has been a while since I have handled this exhaust. I am not sure you can get done what you want to get done. You may be better off selling the one you have and buying the one you want. It would be a shame to damage the one you have trying to change it. - Van

Believe it or not, I managed to do it, it was a pain in the ass, and almost scratched the exhaust but a good result, in the end, the bike sounds much better now with the open free-flowing tip as opposed to the closed tip. Can you remove the baffle from the exhaust or no? I just bought the 2020 version for my R1 and they say you can remove the baffle, but I can't see how it's possible.

The 2020 version is different than this one. I have not seen it which makes it hard to accurately comment. I would take a look at the instructions that came with it first. If it came with a db killer installed and it is removable there will be a fastener holding it in place that will be visible at the rear of the can on the inside facing the bike or perhaps the very bottom. - Van

The Akra 3/4 systems for the R1 are modular with several combinations available. It makes more sense to sell the pieces individually than to sell them as full kits. - Van

I just bought the link pipe and the muffler but now my question is do I NEED to re-map? Or am I ok leaving it stock mapped.

+Charles Pratt Thanks for the question! Re-mapping is not essential in order to use this exhaust. If you are after peak performance you will want to get a fuel unit or a re-map but if you do not wish to pursue those things it will not damage your motorcycle!

I'm asking because I don't know, but I thought red locktight was the it ain't never coming off color. Watching this a few years later. What are your thoughts that DMG finally stopped acting like a 2yo and is allowing AMA MotoAmerica to sanction the 200 next year?

You can get red loctite to release with a little bit of heat. I am excited to head to Daytona with MotoAmerica in March. Max Van will be competing in the King of The Baggers along with Jr Cup in 2022. MotoAmerica is doing a solid job with the series so I expect to see great things for the 200. - Van

To start I would go slip-on, then you get a great looking cannister while you wait for the CAT eliminator.

Personally I would go with the Akrapovic but I would watch our comparison videos to figure out the sound that you really like!

***** It won't hurt the bike to run without a tuner, remap, flash, etc but for the smoothest running bike it is a good place to start! For peak performance it is always good to use one of these fuel management ideas.

+Anthony evert I would say the Arrow is louder and will make just a bit more power than this 3/4 system. Now that said most riders will never notice the very slight difference in power (myself included). The quality and looks of this Akrapovic system are on another level as compared to everyone else IMO. There are other good systems for sure, many are more affordable and will perform and sound great. - Van

Does it sound much better than the stock exhaust? After test riding and hearing a stock one it is so much better than videos will have you believe, so I'm not trusting videos of this exhaust.

IMO after removal of the CAT this bike sounds much better. The stock exhaust was actually not bad for a stock system but an aftermarket like the Akra is a huge change. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for replying. I'm probably going to buy the 60th anniversary 2016 R1. That comes with the Akra slip on so it'll be a start. May have to invest in de-cat after that. Although then I would need to buy a different belly pan as I think it looks really odd without the box there!

Yes removing the cat and installing the slip on with the mid pipe will drop some weight and increase the power. To get the maximum benefit you will need to flash the ECU or install a fuel controller. On the R1 I would suggest the FTECU flash kit. - Van

No unburnt fuel being expelled. This bike was flashed and had block off plates installed on it which will reduce the flames. - Van

+Alex G. You can't just throw a cat deleting exhaust on and not expect it to run poorly. Get a flash tune, PCV, or Bazzaz.

+Alex G. Get a Flash Tune Kit, this will help solve that issue. That said the bike should still have more power higher in the rev range than before you installed this. I believe the exup valve is also intended to help with power at the lower end a bit, the negative is the flow restriction at the upper end. End of the day you will need to run just a bit higher in the rev range for low speed riding, the improvements will be noted as you rev the bike more and at higher speeds. - Van

Depends on what you are looking to spend in all honesty. The Akrapovic stuff is really some of the highest production quality stuff you can find out there. On the other hand M4 has great fitment and is priced very reasonably. Really all about getting what is right for you!

Good morning. I hope someone can help me. I recently bought an R1M (2019). Akrapovic slip on and link pipe are been mounted. I have already optional DBkiller but I'm using the motorcycle without. Now I have a little pops and backfire. I don't care about this but I don't want that the durability of the engine will be comprimized. Someone told me I need to flash the ECU or add a injection CPU. Someone else told me I'm ok and I can use the motorcycle without any problems for the future. Could you give me a professional opinion?? Thanks a lot.

You will not damage the bike riding it with this system installed. With that said flashing the ecu on your bike will significantly improve the power and performance of the bike. If this is something you are interested in then do it, if you are happy with how it performs now keep the money in your pocket and leave it alone. - Van

@@sportbiketrackgear Just to make sure, Akra link pipe and slip on plus FT ECU flash will get improved performance? Also, this system retains the two O2 sensors but the Graves redesigned system completely eliminates the O2 sensors. Why the difference? Is it better to retain the O2 sensors?
