With global leagues and sold-out stadiums, esports is truly hitting its stride with explosive growth. However, it's not just the big names that have been able to find success in this industry. Smaller titles have also taken advantage of the improvements to streaming technology and the cultural shift in watching online tournaments to build up their competitive communities.
Created by Alexey Pajitnov in 1984, Tetris is a classic title that has transcended generations to become a global icon of gaming with a small yet passionate esports community.
In this video, we take a look into the world of competitive Tetris.
We would like to thank everyone from the Tetris community who took the time to speak with us and make this video possible.

As a competitive Tetris player, it's always painful to hear outsiders talk about it because it always sounds like, "Sometimes, players will shoot each other from really far away. This is called "sniping" This video was pretty good though. Not only did you not just focus on classic like most reviewers do, you actually got some player insight into what actually goes through the head of a player. I do think you should've mentioned how controversial 4widing is, but that's just a nitpick.
@JuanPablo-gr5pp
@JuanPablo-gr5pp 4 жыл бұрын
What is controversial about 4widing ?
@andrewprahst2529
@andrewprahst2529 4 жыл бұрын
Juan P Garcia They're relatively easy for how powerful they are. If a 4wider knows what they're doing, there's basically nothing the other can do once they get one going. The exception to that is "just 4wide back" which kind of makes the game 1 dimensional and repetitive to watch. There are some opening counters like perfect clears, but those aren't 100% reliable, and can only really be done on command at the beginning of the match. Generally, if a player can get one up quick, especially a center 4wide, and doesn't drop the combo, there's nothing the other person can do but take the L. To give you some insight into how the community feels about it, one of the pro players shown in this video has a "No 4widing" emote on his twitch chat, and several fan-made versions of Tetris have it nerfed. I know a guy who hosts a community event where he penalizes players if he catches the, using it. In guideline games, many players just mutually agree to not use it in the name of good fun. And of course, there are the people who say "it's in the game, deal with it." Its essentially the same as any overpowered character, strategy, or item you might see in a competitive game.

Should have added that, despite being competitive, this is EXTREMELY wholesome, with everyone supporting each other as much as possible. I wish I could say "cover Panel de Pon next!", but our own scene is still pretty niche (but definitely growing online!). We were about to finally get one of our first really substantial offline tournaments with Pokemon Puzzle League at Perfect Clear, but then the pandemic happened... It was scheduled for April, got rescheduled for August, and now it looks likely it'll need to be pushed back even farther, assuming it even happens at all at this point. There is a silver lining, though. There exists an extremely accurate fan game called Panel Attack which has online play and a ranking ladder which the community has been using to build up a grassroots competitive scene. The release of Panel de Pon on the Nintendo Switch Online service has also added a new way for us to play the game online. I'd encourage anyone who's interested to search for either the "Panel de Pon" or "Tetris Attack Online" Discords. Feel free to hit me up, too, if you're having trouble finding us. I've more or less become the self-proclaimed ambassador for our community, despite not being terribly active in it myself. :p I'm BusterBeachside#4501 on Discord!

The main reason why Tetris isn't as big as it could be, is because of The Tetris Company, the legal owner of the brand. They denied ARIKA to make sequels of TGM, or even port them on Consoles. They shut down Tetris Friends, a flash game, and never ported it to HTML. Tetris Friends no longer had dev support after 2014, and during 5 years, the site was filled with malwares and intrusive ads, that the Guideline had no choice but dealing with it, or creating unofficial and underfunded projects. They consistently denied both the Guideline and Grandmaster scenes to get bigger and more accessible. And you can't buy older Guideline games, like the ones made by EA, THQ or Tetris, because they constantly delist them, and deny players for buying them. Nowadays, the actual CEO of Blue Planet Software, parent company of the Tetris Company, is Maya Rogers. Daughter of Henk Rogers, founder of BPS. She did many interviews, talking about turning Tetris as a "life-style brand". They want to make Tetris a fashion brand, making partnerships with Hello Kitty, UNIQLO, and others. And those were at the same time when the Guideline Tetris scene had to make their own stable Tetris clients, or when the TGM scene had to buy expensive Arcade hardware, or rely on emulation. I get why Akshon decided to dodge this subject. It's understandable that they want to be as neutral as possible. But TTC, the real owners, did everything wrong towards the support of their competitive community. And people has to address that fact. If you think Tetris is an esport, it isn't. And if you think Tetris should be one, you have to know why it isn't.
@Akshonesports

Thanks for taking the time to put this comment together, it's something that we were aware of but unfortunately the video was already getting a bit long from spotlighting the competitive scene alone. The story of how this company's desire for a certain branding direction that conflicts with the growth of its competitive community has similarities to Nintendo's interest in having Smash Bros be a family friendly title.
@C4_Shaf
@C4_Shaf 4 жыл бұрын
@@Akshonesports I completely agree. When you put both communites side by side, it has tons of parallels. Mainly Classic/SB64, Grandmaster/Melee, and Guideline/Brawl. There was Guidelines VS Grandmaster tensions in the past, that wasn't that different from the Brawl VS Melee tensions in the Smash community. So yeah, I completely agree with that statement.

I expected to hear something about the "waterfall" effect, which means that there is gravity and a cut piece can fall from its position after deleting a line, I don't know if that concept is official since the only place I read it was playing an illegal copy of Tetris for my old cellphone which teach me that mechanic and I hadn't forget it since then.

I'm new to this channel honestly but has super smash bros. Been spoken about because if not I would love that. That would be 10 billion percent exhilarating.

I think Classic Tetris gets the most traction because of CTWC, but those who are unfamiliar with guideline have their mind blown with the pros' 3+ pps gameplay.

1. If you were going to use Blitz's IE logo pattern build, it would've been nice if you had given him credit. 2. It would've been nice if you had talked about pattern building as an additional facet/discipline of Tetris.

Wasn’t the first “guideline game” released in 1999, though? Or did they not formally standardize the guidelines until two years later?

I'd say the most competitive part of Mario kart is time trials, and if you want a good channel for that, I recommend nmeade

Search a channel called "Mario Kart Central". The most competitive MK format isn't time-trials. It's 6v6, 12-race Grand Prix. They have tons of teams, their own competitive league (MKU), and even a World Cup every year. You should definitely watch and support them.

Thing with this video is that this is more focused in Guideline Tetris. Classic Tetris plays way differently.
