As an educator for 25+ ys for me to listen to DeVos as a possible cabinet educational leader, I was totally dismayed that she didn't understand the difference between "proficiency vs growth". This gave a pause back to W Bush's "no child left behind" legislation that was mathematically flawed from the start and put a strain on the educational system from top to bottom. I thank Al Franklin's for pushing her on this point.

Growth vs. Proficiency has been a debate in education for YEARS. If she can’t understand that, the she has NO business being Secretary. The fact that she was even considered was ridiculous. But to win?? Horrific.

I agree with MANY in this forum and dislike that someone who has never attended a public school, never worked in a public school, nor sent her kids to a public school. She has also publicly stated some abhorant things about how she "expects a return on investment for her families campaign finance contributions". However, DeVos was not so wrong in her attempt to clarify the difference between proficiency and growth. Franken didn't let her answer the question, but her clarification was not so off--here is the definition of proficiency in education: "Proficiency is about a specific level of achievement at a specific point in time. In particular, it is about achievement that is considered “good enough” at that point in time".

She is a blonde Sarah Palin... just a little less intelligent, and a whole lot scarier.

I knew I didn't like Betsy very much, but until now, I didn't know the depth of her ignorance.

This woman is completely and obviously unfit but Trump supporters will close an eye to it because their dear leader being happy is more important than their kids apparently.

Ultimately, both proficiency and growth have value in both education policy and the classroom. If students are not proficient in critical knowledge and skills by the time they finish high school, they will not be prepared to enter college or have the skills necessary to enter the workforce. However, if teachers focus solely on moving students toward proficiency , then they may fail to help their highest performing students realize their full potential and devalue the growth that these students may show. Striking a balance between focusing on proficiency and growth can lead to a more nuanced approach. Confirming Devos, Americans will feel the effects in the next year. Especially when funds are withdrawn from the schools budget. Why would people vote against their own self entrance?
