I took a jazz class and we talked about him and scatting for a couple days. As someone who's played music for a long time I was captivated by his talent and skill. Sometimes what he does is funny or strange compared to modern music but no one can deny his skill. I think him being okay with being a little different and strange is what makes him so captivating to me. He doesn't care what he looks like he's just doing his thing and making his music.

actually if you listen to Indian musicians, they have a way to "sing the rhythms of the tabla" or "vocal percussion" to mimic each of the different types of finger/hand strokes used when they play a set of tabla. That's probably an older form of beat boxing. The term used is Konnakol. Check out Trilok Gurtu, Zakir Hussain, they are probably the two best contemporary tabla players. I think Trilok is more original as he strays away from traditional Indian sounds and rhythms as he incorporates other music forms. Konnakol is taught to elementary school kids in India as they have to be able to "sing" the parts before they can learn how to play the instrument. it helps internalize the rhythms better. top percussionists can improvise rhythms and then play them after they sing them.

The original Take Five by Dave Brubeck has always been my favorite piece of music. I just saw this version. My first thought seeing it before I listened was maybe it's not the same song. I mean how could anyone do a vocal of it, right? I was moved to tears. Unbelievable. Al Jarreau is a celestial being not of this earth.

+Edwin Stewart No way to describe is right. Not only his scat that's so amazing - he morphs into a ton of different musical instruments while being a living, breathing super jazz singer of all time. Watch some of his videos from the 70's up to the current day. He's just a joy that was created for our entertainment. There still are people out there that don't get it and I feel sorry for them. He is awesome!!!

40+ years ago a friend of mine worked at the Beacon theater and Al Jarreau was performing. I had never heard him before, only heard of him. I was there while he was practicing for the upcoming show and got to meet him backstage. Of course I stayed for the show. He absolutely blew me away. He was incredible!

I remember this concert. I'd never heard of the guy. Saw the show on HBO or something. Never forgot Al Jarreau again after that. Simply the best. He's like a jazz trumpet or sax player and can damn near sing every lick you could put through a horn. I don't know if any of you know or remember that singer in Fifth Element. They used some synthesizer tricks to pull off that performance. Al Jarreau could do something like that without any synthesizer. A great imagination and a voice that could reproduce anything he could imagine. He's the king.

I first saw him when I was a child. I sat in amazement while he seamlessly defied the laws of physics in moving from lyrics to acoustics to percussion and floated your mind in an unbelievable world that he created. I will always love this man's incredible powers to transform me from all the thoughts that I knew then, and now! There has never been another like him, and I doubt there ever will!

The final part, where Tom Canning plays lots of chromatic stuff on the Rhodes and Al Jarreau goes deeper into tension and psychedelia, is so incredibly stunning that one feels sad when it finishes!

I like to pick out an intrument in a song and zone in on it. Once I do that with every instrument I sit back and listen to them all at once without straining...and that's when the song gets really good. No song is boring after that. Try it, man.

Al Jarreau is the Greatest Jazz Singer of this era. The way he could change the sounds, mood, styles in his voice was amazing. There will be no other singer like him. I've had the pleasure of watching him in concert up close & personal, but this particular performance is SPECIAL. Since his death, I've become mesmerize with this set. Just UNBELIABLE & GREAT ALL IN ONE! It's amazing how the music transcends his being. How his voice or being becomes every instrument in the band & he does not hold back, doesn't care who watching, he was a professional at his craft & I will always miss Mr. Al Jarreau. One more note on THE MAN- My friends & i went to Central Park to see a free concert. On the card was Sly & The Family Stone. Holding true to form, Sly & the Family Stone never showed up, but in their place was Al Jarreau. You just wouldn't believe the cat calls and boos that came from the crowd, including myself and the group I was in. No one had heard of Al Jarreau. But once he started singing & performing we were stunned by what we were hearing from this singer that we never heard of. To say the least we never forgot who this singer was & I will always sing his praise to this day. This recording from 1976 is one of if not the best live videos I've seen of a performance. Thank You Al Jarreau & GOD bless you my brother for bringing JOY & HAPPINESS INTO OUR LIVES.

I bought this album in 76' as well as his earlier albums. He was an immense unique talent and in many ways under rated fusing jazz, vocalese and soul and it could be argued being a source of modern beatboxing. I had the privilege of seeing him perform live many times, a huge influence on mine and many others lives and greatly missed

Outstanding!! This 1976-77 era was the height of his super powers - the "Look to the Rainbow - Live in Europe" album, from this same tour, is among my all time favs - the performance of this song is even better here in this video, so thank you!

We have been blessed by many artists who have touched our souls, but once in a while someone comes along who seems to be host to something other worldly. I believe that Mr. Jarreau, was one of those "once in a whiles". I am fortunate to have shared earth space with his artistry. You are sorely missed brotherJarreau. Unbelievable, again and again! I've watched this video again and again and I never get bored! What a charisma, what a voice! Saw and heard him live in the 80's and can't forget that EXPERIENCE!

I don't think I've ever smiled broader than I just did while listening to this! To have such control over your voice is simply amazing. I'm 14 years old, and it saddens me that I first hear of this genius now... after his demise.

I'm a considerably young jazz singer who has grown up in jazz's unfortunate decline in popularity. This video in particular is what I show people to get them interested in jazz. I wish I could've seen Mr. Jarreau live, but unfortunately he was before my time. Rest in peace, you will not and can not be forgotten.

I was living in Southern Cal. when Al Jarreau stepped onto the scene. He was like . . . WOW! He's still like that. You gotta love him. I can't stop moving when I hear him doing his thing. Jarreau has got his boogie down.

Not necessarily... The beatboxing part of it had completely evolved...even a dude from Bmore travels the world taking the sounds everywhere with orchestra...mind-blowing and of course I'm forgetting his name but search "amazing beat-box" or even be does scat....
