In this video I explain how to play my original banjo arrangement of "Alabama Bound" using traditional two-finger as well as overhand (clawhammer) techniques.
I derived my version from old recordings of "Papa" Charlie Jackson, Henry Thomas, and Huddie "Lead Belly" Ledbetter. My instrument is an 1888 Thompson & Odell 1st model "The Luscomb" banjo tuned fCFAC ~ gDGBD. I'm using La Bella nylon strings and a Joel Hooks bridge.

I was born listening to rap/pop, now listening to old-time and playing guitar, and learning clawhammer banjo. Thanks to channels like you, very grateful to play music with purpose.

That's awesome. I got into folk style music around the age of 12 from listening to Garcia/Grisman. For some reason, the Grateful Dead appealed to me when other people my age were into rap as well, and that took me down all sorts of band rabbit holes, leading to old time. I'm 50 now, and still love the old time music.

I'm seeing this was uploaded 2 days ago. The fields are lush, green, the birds and bugs still singing. Meanwhile there's 6 inches of snow on the ground, it's 12 degrees outside in Montana, and everything's gonna be DEAD 'til May. Sure wish my ancestors had as much sense as yours. The hell were they thinking, settling these frozen wastes? God damn, what I'd give to be wearing a t-shirt in the sun 'bout now.

My oldest daughter started playing fiddle less than 2 yrs ago, my youngest daughter has started ukulele (and using a banjolele at the moment). I finally acquired a five string banjo recently after a little time borrowing a neighbors. You were one of the first youtubers I watched for banjo playing and was happy to share most of your videos with my youngest daughter (had to skate over a couple of the songs with more blue lyrics). You inspired me to finally pick up the instrument. Thank you for all the fun videos.

I've played the violin for many years and dabbled in cello and bass guitar. Ive always loved the banjo and these videos really inspire me to pick one up and give it a try. You make it sound easy enough with a little practice.
