For Such EXPENSIVE and Beautiful Lamps YOU WOULD THINK they would go back to Brazil and get the Mantles made Right Again and Put the Thorium back in.......The Thorium DOES make it much Brighter and Will Not hurt you ....If your such a new age wussy that you are scared to death of a little Thorium then you don't deserve an Aladdin Lamp

Your voice is soothing... nice to listen to... I have 3 #23 Aladdins and they're so temperamental I bought three #3 Queen Anne burners to replace the horrible Aladdin burners. Just bought a new wick for one Aladdin burner and the wick raiser won't catch the metal clips. it raises up and down but the pops right off the wick. USELESS. Also, one would think Aladdin (or SOMEONE) would develop a wick that isn't so high maintenance. (I have a 1900s center draught lamp that works perfectly so it's not that I'm completely clueless.) And another thing... I'm burning paint thinner/low odor mineral spirits at $13/gallon and it works fine in a center draught lamp.

Love my aladdin's and cant imagine not having them but I haven't had great luck with the new mantles. I've had two now that were broken right out of the box...and at 15 bucks a pop I hope somthing is done sooner rather than later. I usually buy them two t a time now kinds expecting one to not last too long.

A few years ago I purchased two new Lox On mantles ($15 each) from Lehman's for my model 11 and model 12 lamps. Within about one hour of burn time, both mantles had partially disconnected from the top supporting ring. These mantles were made in the Philippines. Is this a common problem due to defective manufacturing on these new mantles? I have had the older original Aladdin mantles last for years without breaking. I wrote back to Lehman's describing the issue but never heard anything back from them. I'm discouraged for the future of Aladdin lamps if you can no longer get a mantle that will last. Have there been any improvements to the quality of mantles that are currently available? Thanks!

Lehman's has been sold to another Ohio Amish group as of 2023. Not sure what will become of the Aladdin product line. I looked online for the past year wanting to purchase a few lamps and they were listed as out of stock. Finally found some at my local antiques market. Having to get creative in sourceing parts.

I wonder if you can repair old mantle holders by using those mantles meant for petromax lamps... Loving kerosene lamps I've wanted to try an aladdin lamp but they're not common in Europe and mantles are expensive. Once used they're like petromax very fragile. On the other hand petromax mantles are cheap and readily available. So therefor wondering if fitting a petromax mantle on an Aladdin holder is doable and with what result....

Just purchased my first Aladdin lamp. Completely ruined the mantle and did some damage to the wick. Got a new mantle and got a new wick but the flame is not symmetrical. In some spots there is almost no flame and in others quite a large flame. Lamp runs but at low power and I get dark spots on the mantle if I turn it up much at all. I’m running kerosene. Your help would be appreciated. Thanks

I think that with enough fiddling, you can remove the broken ash mantle and replace it with a coleman one. If that even works, i think it'll be worth it considering the ubiquity of them.

The blue-green mantles with the top black ring (on right) are very cheaply made. I bought some and they fell apart in areas when I performed the burn-off (without touching the match). Regardless of brightness, the older mantles (Made in Brazil) are much more durable and will last longer.

When i lit my first mantle and went to put the glass piece on i did it super carefully leaving it on the table and ruined my mantle right from the get go. It was very dissapointing how little it took. I was told they were fragile. But that was ridiculous. I still used it as long as i could but it keeps falling apart. I love my lamp. Really hate the mantles. From what ive seen they are 30 to 40 dollars now. Expensive... since then i bought another aladdin and it came with one of these older style mantles. It came tore up but is still together and in my opinion puts off more orange yellow light and is much brighter. So far i prefer the old stock mantles.

In the 1950's my dad used to take us camping in Sequoia National Park several times a year. Without a doubt, his Coleman 220 white gas lantern was brighter than anybody else's. Lodgepole was a big camp ground but you could see our camp site from 1/4 mile away as it had the brightest whitest lantern. Pop hot rodded the lantern but he told me his secret was to buy the ''old'' mantles made before WWII as they were brighter. He bought up boxes of them whenever he could find them. Perhaps they had the thorium in them. I also use Peerless mantles on my Coleman lanterns these days as they burn brighter than he Coleman brand. I love my Aladdins but it seems like there are different kinds of mantle bayonet fittings and chimneys used between them with no interchangeability.

Gosh such beautiful lamps with an amazing amount of light output. Quite disturbing to hear all the negative comments and complaints about them. They just totally unaffordable in South Africa, never mind the cost of the mantle. Sad really in a country reeling from an very serious energy crisis with power cuts on average 4-6 hours a day.................oh well thats life I guess

How long should mantles last with normal use?
@davidsprofitt
@davidsprofitt 5 жыл бұрын
I burn my aladdin lamps (old thorium mantles from ebay, generally) regularly. I've had mantles that have been on my lamps for several years without issue (and these were often over 50 years old before being installed). If you don't touch them (you should seldom/never need to remove that chimney from around the mantle once it is installed) they last a long time, and even when they do start to tear, they still have a good while before they actually fall apart.

The material you want is fragile. So it's manufactured and sold with a flexible binder so it's not damaged in shipping and installation (especially tying Coleman style mantles on). Then you burn off that binder to leave only the part you want. It's not ash. And if there was a better option they would have switched to it long ago. Honestly it's a science/manufacturing wonder that they developed the mantels we have.

The oldest mantle on the left is more uniform in shape. The one on the right is probably smaller because it takes less materials and cheaper to produce. When they redid these mantles and dropped the brightness down to a 40 watt bulb, it was no longer anything special. An aladdin lamp will burn just fine without a mantle and almost as bright. The problem with the new mantles is the cost and they don't hold up. People hate them, hate them, hate them.
@garyfleming4101
@garyfleming4101 2 жыл бұрын
They DO NOT glow anywhere near as bright without a mantle. I have a maxbrite burning with the lower 40 watt mantle and a 23 burner with no mantle on it. There is no comparison at all. Turn the lights of in the room with the 23 and it's almost dark, turn the lights off in the room with the maxbrite and there is light. Maybe a Rayo can make decent light without a mantle but not one of my Aladdins can.
@southernguy35
@southernguy35 2 жыл бұрын
@@garyfleming4101 , with an older mantle, that's true. With a new mantle that quickly warps or breaks, not necessarily. I was pointing out that an Aladdin can be used without a mantle. Maybe yours can't if you have that that 23 model burner. The B model burners are much higher quality and burn just fine without a mantle. This is the problem with the Aladdin lamp corporation. The best model burner they had was the model B. They were in the process of making another burning that wouldn't soot but a flood wiped out a lot their stock and molds. To keep up with costs, they made various burners that were cheaper to make. Some are sheer crap. I bought a hanging brass Aladdin new and hung over the kitchen table. Under it was a big bowl of peppermints. One day they tasted funny. The metal used was brass plated and had corroded out dripping kerosine into that bowl. I called Aladdin and they shipped out a new one that was solid brass. But that burner was dangerous. You had to watch it or it would run away with you. It would get overly hot and never did burn right. One time I thought I was going to have to use a fire extinguisher. That is a model 23. I plan to buy a used model B burner and replace it as it's down right dangerous to use it for very long with a mantle. On the mantles, it's my understanding that they had to reduce the statement of as bright as a 60 watt bulb to that of a 40 because the mantles had thorium in it and they had to take it out. You can go on various sites and people complain about receiving them in the mail already broken, they don't last long and don't put out the light of the older mantles. That mantle really killed most of what's left of the company. I can't see paying the price they're asking for a new mantle at 25 bucks each when I have four lamps that I'd need to outfit and the life expectancy of the mantle is questionable. You obviously haven't used the mantles that used to be brighter. The same thing applies to the chimneys. At one point they were coming out of china. When I bought the first replacement one, the woman opened the box to make sure it wasn't broken. I assume they'd had a lot of people bring them back claiming there were broken. The fact was they weren't the proper glass to burn as hot and would crack on the lamp. The one I bought wouldn't even stand straight. It was crooked. Then they started coming out of other countries but I'd hate to price a chimney now with inflation kicking in.
