In a very special interview, renowned broadcaster, legendary Wallabies coach and the anti-establishment voice of Australian rugby Alan Jones joins Martin Devlin to chat ahead of the first Bledisloe Cup test in Melbourne. Jones talks about the state of rugby in Australia, the suffocation of the game and the fish-heads who run it.

100%. A well respected former AB coach recently told me something similar - we are run by people that don't understand rugby - how to win rugby and what it takes to develop rugby. He'd never say it publicly.

Wise words thanks Mr Jones and has a few points here. The last 15 years has seen rugby in Australia advance to the rear. When will rugby arrive and wake up.

NRL’s biggest games are always mid week. A clash in Sept means RU Australia did not book it early enough. RU in Australia, as usual AJ is exciting but narrow in knowledge. Private schools as a continued basis to seed RU was a disaster! Those schools deliberately expanded winter sports out of demand for choice, AND greatest number of serious injuries were at school level, because of poor rules about strength, technique and weight.

Flicked between the Union test match and the League finals last week. Wallabies packed down a scrum, so flicked over to NRL, watched 2 attacking, fast sets of six . Flicked back and they're still repacking the same scrum. Gotta agree with AJ HERE, If Union wants to make back ground in Oz.
@iancurtis1152

I know a Union scrum takes ‘for ever to form’ it’s done for player safety but I’d prefer watching a Union scrum than the alternative League ‘let’s have a hug -a-bugs going on’ scrums in League have become the “tail bone”, its there but we really don’t need it.
@cosmosdaze
@cosmosdaze Жыл бұрын
Agreed but I'd rather not watch either to be honest. When I was a kid, my favourite part of the scrum was seeing backline vs backline (Either code). At least Union still has that, tho it rarely gets past the 10 now. Don't wanna risk being isolated I guess. Still miss those intricate, sweeping moves, patterns and 1 on 1 battles.

Love Alan and he's gotta be controversial but not with him on general disparaging of the refs and administrators. The time the ball is in play is way more now, certainly more than the 80s. Edit: ok now listened to the end and go along with everything he said LOL. How good were the 1980s and 90s Wallabies!

I agree the game needs to be more like the AB’s blueprint of years gone by as that was entertaining.Unfortunately now it’s all about muscling the opposition which is very tedious and boring and as was said gives refs no option but to stop start the game.As an England supporter I’d love to see us play the free flowing ball in hand game but I think with EJ at the helm that won’t happen. I think world rugby is in a board room in Ireland now if I’m not mistaken?

I couldn’t fathom why 2 tests this year were played in Adelaide and now Melbourne tonight, I even said that to my other kiwi mate last week, why is it going up against the NRL finals tonight. Rugby is dying in Australia because they continue not to play in Rugby heartlands of Australia IE ACT, NSW or Qld, or even WA with the biggest expats from South Africa, England and NZ would’ve been a better choice.

I disagree with his take on decisions in the game 'coming from London'. I like a dig at the English as much as the next man but that's how it worked 50 years ago and not now, World Rugby are based in Dublin and the refereeing boss is French. The issue is that unions are too disorganised and self serving, World Rugby actually work for them, the unions vote on any major issues so they can push anything through if they get consensus. A great example is Super Rugby after Covid, NZR declare unilaterally what the competition is, Australia disagree and SA aren't spoken to. The are not working together. Some will say "ah but the NH will block this and that" but that also isn't true, they don't vote as a bloc and they don't all play the same style. Smaller countries like Ireland, Wales and Scotland struggle to get the same number of huge units that England, SA and France can get. They should work together but are too dysfunctional right now.

Have to agree with Alan Jones Rennie is Playing people out of position and as he has said Tate McDermott not getting even in the 23 team so not getting any experience playing international playing time We lost the last game because of Nick White due to he's belligerent behaviour and he's pick Jake Gordon to start telling the journalist in a interview that he played a good game against the Boks ( that is absolutely B S ) IAM beginning to believe that Rennie has no idea what he's doing Recce Hodge is on the bench when he should be starting at fullback Andrew Kellerway is starting fullback and should be on the wing where he is more effective Jordan Patia should be playing 12 or 13 where he's running skills can be used to a better advantage In conclusion if we keep this coach through to the RWC I garente we will not get to the quarter finals And we will get a good slapping from N Z today Post game interviews are always the same conversation to many penalties we weren't at the breakdown quick enough we didn't take our opportunity when we had them ( hello that's why you are coaching them to make those improvements ) And another thing Hoops is not playing I believe that there has been a falling out with the game plan and the coaching selections it has to be something other than Hoops being mentally exhausted Anyway where ever you are have a good day

Just finished watching the game We as in Australia played very well never thought we would play such a good game , as I said in my last comments I thought we would get a good slapping and that putting Andrew Kellerway at fullback was a big mistake ( I was proven wrong ) and a few others , we nearly made it Congratulations Australia worth watching

Melbourne loves Rugby the game was sold out, Rugby Union is loved in Melbourne. Five of the Wallabies are friggin Victorian?? Alan Jones..who cares nobody listens, he’s right nobody listens to what he says anyway. There’s great rugby infrastructure right across Melbourne. There’s plenty of great AFL players that would switch to rugby. Come to Melbourne Alan there’s rugby grounds everywhere. Don’t listen to this out of touch Dinosaur.

But also, that Melbourne do love their Melbourne Storm in Rugby League Football & also love both of their Melbourne City & Melbourne Victory in Football as in Soccer but I am not convinced that Rugby Union Football is very popular at all in Melbourne especially that Melbourne Rebels in Rugby Union Football which is Very Unfortunate & Very Sad but I do love the Melbourne Demons in Australian Rules Football as well too of course.
