@@Ryplayskeys Well it all depends... 4 string is the bread and butter and can get the job done but in most modern music a 5 string is needed for those low notes on the B string. You can't get those low notes on a 4 string. Most bass players especially in gospel are playing 5 string these days so when they go to a low B or a low C you will be at a disadvantage with a 4 trying to emulate what they play. As for the difference between the two: the only difference is the amount of range you can get. Similar to a 67 key keyboard vs an 88 key. You get more range. 4 strings less range and a 5 string you get more lower range. So it all depends on what type of music you wish to play. If its gospel without question get a 5 lol. Hope this helped.

I'd start with a 5 string, you can just ignore the low B string anyway if you're not confortable playing it yet (you can use it as a thumb rest). Also, I think playing lower notes than E is not the only benefit of having a 5th string, and I feel many people overlook this. You can use that 5th string to play notes from the E string, so that you don't have to move your hand that much in complex lines. Like for example, instead of playing a F on the 1st fret of the E string, you can play it on the 6th fret of the B string.
