Coming hot off of a 13 year gap, Remedy has finally released the sequel to their Xbox 360 darling Alan Wake. Well.....they did 6 months ago. Since that launch, I've seen people hareld this as the return of horror and even an example of survival horror. So even if I wasn't already working on a retrospective covering all of Remedy's non Max Payne output, I would still have a moral obligation to review it. So let's see how this game holds up to the mountain of praise it has been getting on social media.

Thanks for swinging by dorks! I've been on and off sick for a while. So there are some parts of the video where you can hear a little bit of that classic "I'm sick as hell" congestion. Sorry about that. Big thanks to @Indigo_Gaming and @BoulderPunch for letting me include some of their footage and big thanks to you for actually scrolling down to the comment section.

I'm surprised to hear you say you didn't like the combat when it feels and looks so close to RE2 & 3 Remakes (games you seem to love, combat included I suppose). And even more surprised to hear you say that you liked the combat better in Alan Wake 1. At the time of launch I remember having fun with it in the Xbox 360 days but playing it most recently I'm reminded that it doesn't age well compared to TPS games today. First thing was the camera was a little far, second thing was it focused over the left shoulder instead of the right, you could switch it, but it always reverted back after some time or an action or cutscene. And last was the preferred shot placement, there was no reticle/crosshair, you just shot where the flashlight was directed, there was no skill required, like there is with Alan Wake 2, RE2 & 3 Remakes.

"Over-Developed, Flawed, Fun" a good description of this game. Overall, I liked my time with it and glad I played it. Although. I have little interest to replay the game which is a shame. I just don't want to have to replay certain areas, segments, and I don't want to stand around while conversations happens. I also didn't find the game play fun to play. Its not bad but it did wear thin by the end of the game. I started to run pass enemies if I could, which does work for most of the time.

The original Alan Wake, despite being an action game, gained a lot of survival horror fans due to how dry the well was for the genre at the time. I think Remedy chose to embrace this and go all in on it for the sequel, hence the genre shift.

Well we’re not really sure if Alan wrote the Anderson brothers but he’s definitely influencing their lives in the present with his story, but according to them they aren’t affected by his story and can just see everything he’s doing. Their own art made shit come to life too after all. If Saga is related to Mr Door (who Dylan mentions in Control when he’s discussing his ability to walk between worlds) then that would mean she’s even more powerful then we even know.

I was really excited for the Mind Place mechanics because I'm a huge fan of the Sherlock Holmes games and that's a big part of them. However, I tend to agree that it's basically just matching pictures in Alan Wake 2. In the Sherlock games you could make your own conclusions and had to do more investigation in order to get some clues and that made it a lot more satisfying. But even with all of that, I still think Alan Wake 2 is my GOTY of 2023. I really enjoyed playing it again for the real ending too.

What is undeniable is how pristine the visuals are. I was fortunate enough to enjoy it maxed out with path tracing and while I had to use frame generation to have a playable experience, it worked well for a slower paced game like this. Certainly worth it seeing those interiors in action. Watching light and shadows bounce in uber realism from item to item just gave the atmosphere an extra touch. No doubt the best graphics my eyes have seen in a videogame...so far.

I have to disagree with your criticism about the familial relationship in the game. The game does explain the "amnesia" that the character experiences and with that backstory creates a story about reconnecting with family. It also adds to the confusion about what's being impacted by the narrative and what is "real." In fact, towards the end I found those relationships absolutely adorable and was happy that they found each other again. Also, the reveal about her mind place and what it actually is, after hours of playing and expecting it to work one way, was mind blowing (for me, anyway)

20:56 i think the main objective of the board is to make people understand story better, understand how things are connected one to another, being able to even predict what is true based on what we know. There is a lot of moving pieces, so this "story" board really helps with keeping player on track. I really doubt Remedy wanted it to be what you described in video, as such i think calling this system a problem with game in this case is not good, it does what it is supposed to do. Because something is not as deep as you may like doesn't make it bad if it works.

First of all, I love your videos, I've seen all the retrospective ones on resident evil and I'm a huge fan of the deep analysis of each game. Loving this one too! so I just wanted to comment on the combat: I think the reason why it felt so clunky it's because it was meant to be played with a controller. Remedy has a story with not being able to pinpoint correctly the control with keyboard and mouse, digital foundry made a comment on a lag that has the mouse movement and I think it even it's called the "remedy stutter" or something like that. Anyway, when playing on the controller the game has a strong auto-aim that locks on automatically when boosting the light in the exact same spot it needs to destroy the dark shield. however it comes with it being too easy to achieve headshots. I never had an issue with combat for this reason which can be something bad or good depending on the player, however the thing that really kind of bothers me of the game is that it has some kind of adaptive difficulty (like RE4) where, even if you are running out of resources, killing enemies gives you ammo and the red boxes found in the woods just appear more ammo or batteries, which kinda ruin the whole survival horror-ish gameplay they wanted to achieve, I played a lot so I found out wasting ammo is not much of an issue as the game starts to give you plenty ammo in the form of dropouts with enemies. Kind of a shame honestly, aside from that it's one of my favourite games of last year and probably a one time favourite as for storytelling goes. love your content my friend and hope to see more in the future! Cheers!

I think the conclusion at the end was a good one. Recognizing that some of the stuff just isn't for you rather than criticizing people who do enjoy it. Nothing wrong with feeling nostalgic towards older game styles, giving your opinion on why you think a gameplay mechanic didn't work, or why a game was bad, but I always see a lot of comments from "real" fans mocking and insulting those that do prefer newer game trends or sequels/remakes. It goes both ways of course. I am part of a jrpg group on facebook and I have to basically snooze the group whenever a new Final Fantasy game comes out because the arguing between fans of the older games and fans of the newer games gets pretty extreme and hostile. Your attitude is a big reason why I continue to like watching your videos despite disagreeing with you on multiple occasions. Good reviews that are detailed and upfront about your biases and excellent game recommendations on survival horror games that helped me find a lot more games outside of Resident Evil for survival horror.

I'm not even close to being in the same age range as you, but your comment about "Getting old" and how games just are different now...I feel that. I didn't get into gaming until like near the end of the 6th generation of consoles and I've seen how the industry has changed since that era, for better and worse, and also delved a lot into the past regarding games for a good chunk of my life. There's a lot to be said and discussed about the state of gaming as a whole these days but I do feel exactly what you mean how some series don't exactly feel like they use to and seem unrecognizable to someone who's been a fan of them or knows them inside and out that it's just difficult or uncertain if it's the same anymore. I felt a similar way to Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon game I started but still need to finish but felt was good but didn't feel like it hit me the same way that the prior games did and that's a game that's been in development probably about as long as Alan Wake II btw. I also definitely feel that way about Resident Evil and God knows how long regarding FF as well. I haven't played the FF7 remake but when I see that be talked about like it's some amazing game and all I'm thinking "Do these guys know about the original game?", It feels weird to say that as someone who wasn't even born when the original came out. Things that I guess seem amazing and mindblowing to a lot who probably haven't been in the gaming hemisphere for long just don't impress or amaze me. As for AWII, This is like the only vid I have seen about the game and probably gave me a better idea what to expect from it than I think I would have gotten otherwise. II is a game I've been looking forward to playing as I really like Alan Wake 1 and American nightmare, but I was aware it was somewhat divisive, which for me being divisive is a surefire sign of probably being something of genuine merit. Whenever I saw it, I get the feeling it was Remedy at their most insanely ambitious and completely unrestrained to the point It feel like it has too much or feel bloated as a package. But also probably shows a good amount of them at their best too, so sounds good just not what I probably entirely wanted for a sequel to Alan Wake. I will say that Alan Wake II being James Mccaffey's last role feels like his swan song. That news of him passing away hit hard as someone who loves the Max Payne games and also has a soft spot for AITD 2008. AWII kinda having him back as Max Payne kinda has sold me on it more.

Tbh the gore effects were a big miss for me too. It looked more like their skin textures were just replaced with blood textures. It was only about 3/4 of the way through the game that I realised it was actually altering the models and revealing underneath the skin. Also, the blood was just too red. That's not what blood looks like, especially when it's from deep wounds like from a gunshot. I once bled a whole lot of arterial blood and it was daaaark. I also did the same thing with the flashlight. I think another way it might be solved would be to just make the flashlight beam about 40-60% narrower.

One interesting thing about the combat that I’ve noticed is that on consoles (or at least the series X version) it seemed to me that the flashlight boost had an almost aim assist feel to it that locked it onto the taken for me. I still had the boost miss the darkness shield sometimes but only maybe 5 times in my 30 hour 100 percent play through. My friend played it on PC and had the same complaints brought up in the video concerning the combat. It’d be interesting to see if this is an actual feature on consoles or if it just didn’t bother me as much. Either way, great video Jared!

Just what are you even talking about? Saga being related to Thor and Odin is EXACTLY something to be expected from Remedy. They've been building up to connecting everything together for years now, and this is just another factor for it. This is another one of those cases where you basically criticize games for being not exactly the way you want them to be and applying some obscure logic to justify your position. It's like your BS definition of Survival Horror in the modern clones video, where you start out with the already wrong assumption that Survival Horror has to be third-person perspective and then over the course of the videos you slowly alter that definition until in the end you basically just make up reasons why games you don't enjoy that much are NOT Survival Horror. Dude, like it's absolutely fine if some parts of a story or gameplay aren't yours, but that isn't a negative for the game, nor is making up some weird reason like "that's not really necessary" as if it is a substantial valid criticism. Sorry, but those parts of the review are really tiresome for me. I mean, you haven't even played Control, but reject story and game beats that were basically introduced or at least hinted there, you know that "Alan Wake's American Nightmare" already had different gameplay to the first game, but you act as if the game systems in 2 should have been more like in the first game. Like, man, you give your opinion, but try to be a bit more objective or at least open about how your judgement is COMPLETELY subjective in many cases. And I am not a complete Alan Wake 2 stan, I also have my criticism, but your review is just so helplessly opinionated.

From my understanding saga was Tor's granddaughter and her mother Freya left when she was a baby and never mentioned her dad and uncle then died when Saga was young. Hence her not knowing that she was related to the Anderson brothers. And the consensus is that Door is her dad and most likely why she ended up a player in the story more than anything. (Also would explain how she is able to escape/move through the dark place as easily as she does). IMO I think they changed the combat to match the more horror theme of this game instead of the more action feel of the first. I have played both and I didn't particularly care for the game play in the first. (Tho I agree with final fantasy... I miss my turn based combat) The mind place could have been better. To me that was a flaw but I can overlook that lol.

33:40 Shades that won't turn into real enemies disappear after a bit of putting the flashlight on them (without focusing). You can take it slowly but that also opens you up to be surprised by other shadows since they move around so much and if you are a chicken like me, the faster you go the better so I rarely used that strategy around enemies

What's the piano track at 53:47? To add my opinions on the game, while I didn't dislike Saga's character, I couldn't help but ask myself quite often why her part of the game was even a thing. I greatly preferred Alan's segments, but more than that a lot of her side felt like filler.

That track is from Alan Wake 1. I forget the name honestly. So much of AW2's ost was licensed music with vocals so I had to use a lot of music from Control and AW1 in the video. Interesting how you and I had the same feelings, but for opposite characters. HA!

I’ve just reached the part of the video where you mentioned that you haven’t played control yet. For me it was key to finish before Alan Wake 2 as it has Alan Wake specific DLC. My theory is the the current Remedyverse have all Stemmed from Alans Writing in the Darkplace and have been attempts to facilitate his escape. But of course that’s just a my interpretation. Also in terms of Alan Wake 2, i honestly thought that Sagas daughter was actually dead, Alan needed a hero, he wrote in Saga ( though Tor and Odin complicate this more since they clearly know Saga and Tor is Family) and all of the endgame reality points to her being dead.

I found the sound design of the weapons, and especially the shotguns, to be quite good. AND after a while I lowered the difficulty to story mode to get done quicker with the combat, so most enemies died in one shot, which made the weapons feel more powerful. It wasn't a difficulty problem ( I finished pretty much every Resident Evil on hard ), just that reviewers kept comparing this game to RE, and it's clearly not even close so I couldn't be bothered by the combat. A shame really, Control was a lot better.

I remember I got very hyped by the series of live action web videos Remedy put out leading up to the release of Alan Wake 1, which gave off a very other worldly, twin peaks, slow paced, mystery to be solved type of set up - and then when the actual gameplay of 1 turned out for the most part to be linear third person shooting, I was left quite disappointed. Alan Wake 2 feels to me like the game Remedy and I always wanted AW1 to be, and, issues aside (I definitely agree the case board got dry quickly and very long in the tooth) I really liked it. After I finished 2 I did remember thinking it'll be a slog to replay though with all the walking and talking early on. Definitely will be leaving it some time before going back. I gotta disagree on the combat side of things though, apart from being a clear attempt to replicate RE2r (not a bad thing for me) I found it was way more satisfying than 1. When you were comparing the combat of 1 to 2, you were sayng 1 looks, feels and sounds punchier, I would look at the footage of 2 and feel like we must be seeing two different things; to me the guns feel and sound weighty, and the animation on the enemies when bullets land or they die and collapse are convincing, whereas in 1, I thought the clip you picked the gun sounded quite tinny, and I always remember the enemies ragdolling and flipping out when they died , pulling me out of the experience. Otherwise great video, hope to see more from you soon!

Yeah you can definitely feel that Remedy was making the game they originally wanted part 1 to be. Like you can't watch a making of documentary on AW1 without hearing and seeing a bunch of stuff that would eventually make it into the sequel.

@@AvalancheReviews I also had no idea there was bonus footage after a second playthrough, I think its kind of a shame that this wasn't included at the end of a first playthrough; as it is, its a huge cliffhanger for almost the entire games story feeling like very little is fully resolved... I guess its good its there in some form though, so part 2 does wrap up things while leaving major things open for a third game to conclude everything.

when you say the game has left you for an audience that has less joint pain, im assuming you are talking about things like tight camera angle and the combat systems as at least 2 of the examples? but consider they went for a more survival horror approach you have to consider that alot of that stems from games older than alan wake. While yes, im sure they probably saw the success of Resi 2 remake and took some inspo from that, the dna all comes from an era of gaming that was essentially the prime of survival horror (pre 2010) which itself is not a "young people" genre. that tight camera angle originated from resi 4 coming out in 2005. most of these systems are lost on the younger generation. i feel it appeals more to people who played games in the 90's and early to mid 2000's rather than anyone younger. when alan wake 1 came out i was desperately seeking for some kind of psychological survival horror that would scratch the Silent Hill itch since all the games after 4 disappointed me for the most part only to be met with something that was closer to a run and gun ala Max Payne combat than a horror game with enemies less interesting than older horror games. in the end, all the complaints i had in Alan wake 1's combat and lack of exploration when i had played it all those years ago is seemingly addressed in this one. And i certainly don't think im lacking in bodily aches lol. the only thing i would have to agree on strongly is being forced to sit through talking and walking when you want to replay things. i absolutely hated that in games like Resi 5 and 6 where the game would force u to walk so u can talk to your ear piece. i do have to note the sound for the gunshots are more satisfying in alan wake 1.

Completely agree with the combat/ flash light being below par.. i think a lot of my complaints could be fixed by having the torch deal passive damage to enemies 'shield' like in AW1. By removing this, the torch became a predetermined energy boost, completely out of my control and completely necessary to defeat enemies. Much preferred the more dynamic approach used previously.

A deep analysis about every important aspect of the game. I don't think you're getting old though. Not liking a trend is normal. I'm sure, I know your feelings about this (my best friends or myself had similar times). Also...thanks to the digital distribution and indie games we have to choose ;) . Besides, a trend is a trend, so who knows what will we get tomorrow. Again, talking only of triple A games. Aaand...well...a 'dated and arcaic' CRPG like Baldur's Gate III has been very successful, for example. So I don't think you're out of touch or anything like that.

Tbh, I've replayed AW2 purely to spend time with Alan. I blitz thru Saga's campaign, but I chain Alan's together for as long as I can. That was my biggest gripe with the game, I came to play Alan Wake, not a secondary protagonist. :( Especially towards the times when she gets hostile with Alan. Not that it wouldn't be a valid reaction, but because I am invested in Alan and playing someone who told him that it wasn't his story it was *their story* --when Barbara did the same thing in AW 1 basically? Hit me so wrong. Makes me not want to play her as a protagonist. Wish I'd have gotten to play Casey if I had to play someone who was gonna be sassy with Alan.

The ‘End of Chapter’ recaps in AW1 were meant to resemble episodes of TV, but they are pretty overdone. Having a recap in TV makes sense because there was usually a week of time in between and you could have forgotten things. Honestly, Saga was completely unnecessary to this game and with all the Sweet Baby Inc stuff that's come out and Remedy's involvement, it's no wonder why she feels unnecessary. She was such a boring goodie-tooshoo character especially after getting the true ending. I was legit hoping that she was actually kind of a crappy mother and focused too much on her work and ended up killing her daughter. Would've made her actually flawed and far more interesting if she was just "coping" to get through it and everything around her was trying to get her to see the truth. Like James from SH2, but noooo she had to have a happy ending because of course we have to ruin the only part of her character that was remotely interesting. It still pisses me off the game called ALAN WAKE 2 only features him like 40% of the damn game. At least his sections are easily the best part without a shadow of a doubt.

The mind place would’ve been more interesting if the game would let you place each piece incorrectly, leading to false deductions that effect how the case progresses. It would make the game less linear and empower the player in their decision making, allowing for consequences if they make the wrong connection. Of course, this would take much more work to make, and require a lot more dialog (one of the most expensive parts of games is paying VO and MC actors) so I understand why they didn’t go that ambitious, but if they couldn’t do that then I don’t get why the case board is interactive at all. They should’ve just made it automatically pin as you get new info and then service as a notes board for players to consult and remember previous story events.
