You create an artificial distinction between "self" and "other," with self on the inside-- sensitive and vulnerable-- and other on the outside-- vast, mysterious and uncaring. So you feel yourself plunked down in the middle of this no man's land, fighting for your life. But the truth is both sides are really "you." There is only the doing with no personal "doer" making it happen. We habitually imagine there must be subject for every verb, but that is just a grammatical convention. We imagine that we have a mind that thinks, but who is the "me" that posseses this thing called mind? What is the mind but the flow of thoughts itself, and what identity do we have other than this flow which no outside person is pushing around, it is just happening, going, changing always. This is a realization so subtle and profound that words cannot easily convey it.
