The actor who played Jesse was in the closet at the time. When this movie came out, it was during the height of what’s called Gay Panic and early days of the AIDS crisis. And it caused The actor to not getting any more work. Essentially, he left the business after this and moved to Mexico. There’s an insightful documentary called Scream Queen, My Nightmare on Elm Street.

I always saw the ending as an allusion to a popular misconception at the time that finding the right woman/man (delete as appropriate) would "cure" homosexuality In the final act, it seems as though Jesse was "released from his demons" by Lisa's kiss, but the ending shows that really Freddy was still there all along

As a gay man and a huge horror fan, A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge is my favorite queer movie! This movie directly captures the experience of coming to terms with sexuality in an unforgiving and scary environment and I love it for that.
@everyonelovesmajima
@everyonelovesmajima 2 жыл бұрын
Freddy is Jesse's sexual confusion. It's a metaphor for the writer's own sexual confusion at the time. He claimed "it was supposed to be subtext" but it's blatantly there. FFS he had a Probe game in his closet and a sign on the door that said "no chicks." Jesse literally runs away from Lisa and goes to Grady, or the gay bar, and Freddy's only vanquished when he finally admits he loves her. Jesse is kind of the damsel-in-distress in the end and it's Lisa that saves him with the power of love. It's totally the point of the movie.

@@RhapsodyAntics I’m not the person you asked, but I know even I recognized the blatant homosexual subtext (mind you, I was maybe 7 and pretty innocent and sheltered in a very small southern town- what I’m saying is I had literally zero exposure to homosexual culture. @AlandaParker
@AlandaParker 2 жыл бұрын
Definitely an apt metaphor for someone who's been made to feel that their sexuality is an aberration. But it's an absolutely devastating idea that he could will it away by forcing romantic love with Lisa only to discover the feelings will alway be there. The more I think about it, the sadder this movie is to me 😫.The first viewing was such a campy good time(still scary but fun), but I think the second might make me cry 😂

Honestly, it felt more like the movie was adding any sort of gay subtext but without much direction. I mean, you can have metaphors for things in movies, like Lights Out and Depression. The trouble is that, like with Lights out, the metaphors and subtext can lead to conclusions that are straight up screwed up. Yeah, that forcing himself situation is sad.

The actor playing Jesse, Mark Patton, is a gay man. He's said he was playing him as a closeted gay guy. The writer of the script also said the homosexual elements were intentional, and Freddy's actor was also well aware of them and leaned into it on purpose. Apparently, though, the director was either unaware or uninterested in that aspect while filming.

There are a lot of conflicting reports from cast and crew. You get people who say everybody knew what kind of film they were making and it was deliberate, and you also get just the opposite. @@AlandaParker I wish they would have had the courage to have the resolution be that when he realized he loved the boy (Grady?, his best friend) that he over came his fears and defeated Freddy. I know that would have been impossible in the 80s but I still wished it. If they ever make a remake of THIS Nightmare I hope they are braver and go for it. "Is that Tina Turner on the wall behind you?" Girl got her priorities! 😄 _The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert,_ honorable mention to the big gay WeHo slasher _Hellbent_ 🌈 I REALLY wanna watch _Moonlight_ but I can tell it's the kind of film I'll need to watch cuddled with someone. Since you've recently seen Halloween 2, I highly recommend at least finishing Laurie's story with H20. It was made to complete the story by people who love the story (it also ignores 4, 5 & 6). There are no other movies after that until Rob Zombie did his remakes and then the franchise was rebooted with the official sequel in 2018. Nope, none whatsoever. Regarding _Nightmare,_ the next three sequels showcase the smartass Freddy we all know and love, but don't forget _Wes Craven's New Nightmare_ and _Freddy vs. Jason,_ they're a lot of fun. I can appreciate the camp of this one even though it's not one of my favorites (I flashback to when I wore those clothes too and that nasty New Coke), but one thing I did like was that Freddy was very threatening.

Mark Patton has a documentary called “Scream, Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street.” It’s fascinating. Nightmare 2 is just bizarre. It’s a one-off that makes little sense with weird gay subtext woven in. As far as the rest of the series, 3 is one of the best, 4 is decent and then New Nightmare is pretty good. The rest of them are awful.

Mark Patton, Nightmare 2 Director Jack Sholder and writer David Chaskin all talk extensively about the making of the film (including all the gay undertones in it) in the long documentary - Never Sleep Again: The Nightmare On Elm Street Legacy (which goes into each Nightmare film in great details within the entire franchise - which is why the documentary is so long, including the crossover Freddy Vs. Jason as well as the short lived TV series Freddy's Nightmares). It is worth checking out (and may even make you appreciate what some of the other sequels were trying to do, although not always very well). 😁👍

I'm glad you mentioned that about the bird in the cage. I think it's cruel too, they are made to fly vast distances, yet it's confined to a small little cage where it can't even fly. I feel the same about fish in a bowl. Fish swim vast distances yet they're confined to a small little bowl where they'll just swim around in circles for the rest of their lives. I also don't see the point of owning such animals. I love them so much but you will never give a fish the same amount of attention you would a cat or a dog, which is pretty sad as it's sacrificing it's whole life to imprisonment just for you to say 'look, I have a fish'. Seems too cruel to me and for such a pointless reason too. I mean why would you ever want a fish or a bird? What can you possibly get from keeping such animals in the restrictions they're kept in? They're quite literally there just for decoration. Sad.

29:25 The movie is actually Lisa's Nightmare. It's the Nightmare of what it feels like to be in love with a gay guy (as a woman). Your love is never enough to save them. The whole thing was her dream as you noticed, she does Nancy's speech at the end to try and destroy Freddy. She also knew where the boiler room was and all that stuff about psychics. She did everything she could but it all failed. Freddy was used as a metaphor for having those gay feelings and not being able to deal with them. Jesse was a metaphor for unrequited love. As aa teenager it always feels like the end of the world when you love someone who doesn't love you back. The coach was abusing the boys and Jesse was his victim. The Dad was always angry at Jesse because he could sense that his son was gay. It was Lisa's fear that the abuse Jesse suffered would take over him and lead him to destroy all his relationships (killing Grady) including her chances with him. But none of it happened. It's all like a dream analysis. Another clue is that Freddy's knives grew out of this guys skin and he hardly used the glove. The real Freddy comes back in part 3. Can't wait for your reaction to it.
@LeBatteur

I feel like this is a massively off base interpretation- why would you relegate the trauma and story of a gay man to the background of a straight woman’s narrative? The story isn’t about her, it’s about Jesse and his struggle with homosexual feelings during his teens in an incredibly LGBT-hostile environment. The ending makes it clear- a straight woman’s love can’t “save” him. Because he doesn’t need to be saved and her feelings on the matter are irrelevant. It’s not. Her. Story. And no matter how much she wants to “save” him, in the end that’s not even part of the picture. It was never an option. And I do take umbrage with the idea of representing the gay character’s sexual feelings in the allegory with horrific murders, but honestly this movie is a mess as it is. Really the only thing about it that’s perfectly clear is the allegory of a homosexual awakening during puberty.

Interesting facts about A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge (1985). In an interview in 1987, Robert Englund said he liked the beginning and end of this movie but had problems with the second act of the plot. Years later, he admits in the Never Sleep Again documentary that he didn’t have that many positive experiences working on the film and even felt that the atmosphere was off when shooting it, lamenting that he had the least fond memories with this entry. (2) Wes Craven refused to work on this film because he never intended to have the first film become an ongoing franchise (and even wanted it to have a happy ending). He also didn't like Freddy manipulating the protagonist into committing the murders. Heather Langenkamp was never asked or even considered for the producers to return to this sequel. Of the entire cast of the previous movie, Robert Englund is the only actor who returned, and even then only after the filmmakers thought the movie was in trouble. This would rarely be repeated for the rest of the franchise (only happening again in Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare and Freddy vs. Jason), which would always do its best to rescue living characters from previous films. (3) The exterior of the home featured fairly prominently in the movie. The address of the house in the movie was 1428 Elm Street in Springwood, Ohio. While the number remained the same as it is in real life, the true address is actually 1428 N Genesee Ave, Los Angeles, California. Located just over a mile away from Sunset Strip.

I wonder if anyone has mentioned for you to watch Darkness Falls. Its a tad corny but I like it. In terms of Halloween, I suggest you watch Halloween H2O next to stay with the Laurie story line since they brought Michael back for the fans and the storyline takes us elsewhere (def go back and watch 4&5 later though) and then watch the reboot Halloween (2018) just to stay with the current timeline. Like watch all the Jamie Lee movies and go back if you are interested. Halloween 4 is worth a watch I think as 5 gets a little weird and 6 is a mess lmao. Also Haunt on Shudder is really good and Train to Busan (zombie movie)
