I know Tess made so many "bad" decisions because she kept wanting to save people she didn't really know, but it was her empathy that saved her in the end. She was able to recognize that Mama Gollum was a victim, and empathized with her. I think Mama Gollum also saw in the end that Justin Long's character was a piece of shit just like Frank. Crazy how by the end of this movie we don't want the Mother to die. Tess was able to recognize straight away that what ever went down in that basement was evil and dangerous, but Keith just didn't get it or really believe her despite that long conversation about women's safety the night before. Similarly, JL's character felt zero fear being down there until confronted by the Mother. If everyone had listened to Tess when she said they should leave, everyone would still be alive.

The director stated he was inspired to write this after reading The Gift of Fear. In that book it talks about a lot of the red flags that women are taught to ignore, and the author encourages them to instead listen to their instincts. You can see this with Tess because her instincts are definitely there, she just struggles with self-doubt. Something I love about Tess is that even through her frustrating decision making you can tell she really is driven by empathy. Her want to believe the best in everyone is also her downfall. A couple of times throughout the movie you see her ignoring the call of her boyfriend that she mentions to Keith, who is controlling and bad for her but someone she is having a hard time leaving. I feel almost certain that by the end of this movie she has a newfound strength and will break up with his ass.
@marianne5055

Speaking of red flags I love how the movie shows the difference in reactions between Tess, Keith and AJ when it comes to sensing danger. Like Tess (very rightly) gets freaked out over the hidden room with the camera and wants to leave. Keith is concerned, yet dismissive of Tess. And AJ is completely oblivious.

Also I very much believe none of y’all know what empathy actually means. She’s not empathizing she’s being an idiot. It says something when I root for the final girl to die. There's so much to unpack on a first viewing, but I like that this goes back to the theme of expected behavior of men vs. expected behavior of women. Tess and Keith touch on it in their conversation about role reversals, but really everything that Tess does later is pretty much all the same behavior that would be considered "heroic" if a man did it. There's the old saying, "there's a fine line between bravery and stupidity" but I think it could be argued that there is no line. The difference is determined by perspective.

For a directorial debut, Zach Creggers knocked this out of the park, it was truly indescribable but an amazing experience. I personally liked Tess, once she talked about how she acted with her ex-boyfriend, I knew what kind of person she’d be. I felt that she had good instincts, but her kindness and emotions superseded her sense. Ironically, her being too nice got her in trouble but also saved her life. I thought the ending with the “mother” was genuinely heartbreaking, and the movie aced its mission statement of “how women treat and are treated in general and specifically in dangerous situations compared to men.”

@@sarahgabriella84 Violence against women is a common theme in every woman's life, so making art about it makes sense. And at its core the Mother is a victim, not a monster, which is why in the end the audience wants her to survive and JL's character to die. It's not a movie about violence against women, it's a movie about believing women. Tess immediately knew the horrors that went on in the room with the camera, and if Keith had believed her instead of treating her like she was hysterical he would have survived. This movie is about men taking women's experiences seriously, and the juxtaposition between our experiences. Women walk through the world knowing that bad things happen to women all the time, and men walk through the world oblivious (with a measuring tape).

According to IMDb Trivia, Zach Cregger was inspired to write this after reading a book about the things women should look out for as signs of danger, and came up with a short about a woman who ignores a bunch of red flags, which was later expanded into this. So the people yelling at the screen at every one of her decisions are correct.

My mom and I went to see this in theatres! We were both suspicious of the first guy right up until his death, then we felt bad for him lol. We also both felt so bad for the 'mother' but also knew that the main girl had to get away, and couldn't while the 'mother' was still alive. It's kind of cool how this movie gives us three different 'types' of guys. The first is well-meaning and awkward, but ultimately harmless. The second is harmful but in a 'non-violent' way, and the third is the violent harmful kind.
@lillustpotion

I think it’s interesting that Keith is seen as harmless. He manipulated her and didn’t listen to her from the very start. She didn’t want to come in. He insisted. She wanted to sleep on the sofa. He forced her to move to the bedroom because of his ideas. He asked her to open wine for a second time after she’d already said no. The awkward hovering before leaving the bedroom wasn’t an accident. The “nice guy” debt needed to be paid, remember? (We all know what that one is ladies!) When she was upset and wanted to leave he didn’t believe her, treated her as a typical hysterical woman and ultimately got himself killed and Tess trapped for weeks and weeks. He just didn’t beat or rape her is all. The bar is in HELL.

I don't think he was really trying to manipulate her per se. He wanted her to stay because he didn't want her going out at night in a terrible neighborhood. I think he genuinely felt bad about the mismanaged reservation situation. He wanted her to sleep in the bed because he was chivalrous. He really wanted her to be sure he didn't poison the wine. He was hovering in the room because in my opinion he's a bit socially inept and had a nice time and didn't know how to leave the situation. I've been there many many times. I didn't get the vibe that he was expecting sex. I think he really was an awkward guy with well-placed intentions and horrible execution. Just in my opinion, I think he recognized himself, being a big 6'4 man, as a danger to Tess because she's a woman and was trying really hard to overcompensate for it by being as non-threatening as possible and making her feel safe. Then again, maybe my character judgment is horrible and I just would've ended up dead lmao

The movie truly subverted expectations for me. I really felt bad for Mother Gollum and was actually touched when she blew a kiss at Tess and I was in tears when the A-hole, played to slimy perfection by Justin Long, threw Tess after she pleaded no. And the song at the end was just perfection. A glorious reaction once again. You've quickly become my favorite movie reactor. Much love and can't wait for more.

I feel like Keith was Schrodinger's Cat. Someone made a comment that stuck with me. We ALL assumed Keith was the bad guy, and then he dies. However, the comment was: "How do we know Keith wasn't going to murder her anyway?". Frankly, we just assume, because he didn't know about the underground area, that he was an innocent. But what if, unconnected to anything else, he really was up to no good? We will never know until we open the box, but we can't now because the movie is over and never answered my questions! Was Keith a good guy? Was he some psycho? Why was the house double-booked? So many questions... OPEN THE BOX!!!!!

This is the funniest reaction I've seen yet, the way you cope with humor is unmatched and so damn entertaining. The underground scene with Keith horrified me in theaters, the transition of you being terrified in that moment to "Mr. Long!" and "that long tittied goblin" had me DYING! *On a day you're feeling something fun, please do a reaction to Do Revenge! I'm glad you got to see this film as fresh as possible! I think this film really works so much better when you go in with as little knowledge about the plot as possible. I knew you wouldn't agree with a lot of the choices Tess made, but what I love about this movie is the way it shows how it's the men's decisions that really have the worst outcomes for Tess. Frank and AJ of course, but even Keith, who seems like a nice guy, is constantly undercutting Tess's choices at the beginning, thinking that he knows better than her.

Great timing, I just watched this movie yesterday and it is crazy lol it went in a completely different direction from where I thought it would go. So interesting and also a very good social commentary on the relationships between men and women or the socialization of men and women. Tess brings up how she had to have her guard up when met with Keith in the house, but if it was the other way around he would have no second thought about his safety when settling in. And it's this nonchalance or lack of self preservation in men that leads to both Keith's and AJ's deaths, with Keith just acting like Tess is a paranoid woman and overreacting when she found something in the basement and walking down and even going further and AJ when he stumbles upon the mine but thinks nothing of it and just keeps measuring. And then of course what almost leads to Tess's downfall is her compassion.
