Here we can see photographs of a VW T2 Westfalia camper van sold by Bonhams auction house in Scottsdale, Arizona, US for USD57,790 in January 2017. As can be seen, although fifty years old, it has been equipped with period furniture and has undergone a magnificent restoration by Napa Valley Restoration which makes it look factory new. An engine rebuild was undertaken by Rick Echlier of Sonoma. The petrol engine is 1,6 litre, it has four speed manual transmission and front disc, rear drum hydraulic brakes
The Type 2 concept is credited to Ben Pon who imported VW vans into Holland. His first sketches date from 1947, but production had to wait until March 1950, as VW caught up with demand for the basic Beetle. Starting in 1951, VW offered an officially-sanctioned camper conversion by Westfalia-werke of Franz Knöbel & Söhne in Rheda-Wiedenbrück, Germany. Built as a van, both with and without rear side windows, it came also as a pickup or a fully-equipped camper, and countless aftermarket conversions were created as hearses, ambulances, police vans and use in the fire service. During the 1960s, the Kombi version, a window van with removable seats, became the transportation of choice for America's hippies, often with psychedelic paint themes.
Original parts here include the gilded German roof rack, factory sway bar, factory gears, curtains, pop-up roof, camping equipment, laminated folding table, storage cabinets, electrical hookups, and factory rear mosquito net. As a finishing touch, custom hardwood floors were installed to complement the living space.
Finished in L-87 Pearl factory white paint over butterscotch leather upholstery, this camper was placed 2nd in its class at the 2016 Ironstone Concours d'Elegance in Murphys, CA, its first public showing.
