LYRICS
All these relief-givers
The needle sure revs in the red
Chemicals like hugs from inside
they feel like my best friend
You think me a coward but I am a warrior
With many voices in my head
When I looked around and I reached out
I saw no alternative
God rest, God rest our souls
And this substance is the only comfort I know
He's been pushing for a while
Can we cut this man some slack
Let him lie down, let him lie down
We are a country desperate for the embryonic
I'm cold and I'm hungry and
I yearn for a hand on my forehead
You think it's a walk in the park and it's easy
"She's got it as good as it gets"
This misunderstanding's the line between living
or being the walking dead
And God rest, please rest our souls
And the more I take, the less comfort I know
She's been pushing for a while
Can we cut this woman slack
Let her lie down, let her lie down
The more that you hurl at me
The more I will curl up in my bed
where's the humanity?
Aren't we all hovering around the same end?
Door number 1, 2 and 3 have been promises
that aren't real enough to be kept
You wish me a speedy recovery
But when you turn I plumb the depths
And God rest, God please rest our souls
This is the surest exit I have known
We've been hurting for a while
Can we cut ourselves some slack
Let us lie down, let us lie down
Let us lie down, let me lie down

Never heard this song until Lisa Marie's funeral. What a hauntingly brilliant song. When you sing about the woman who needs to lie down, can we please let her lie down. Your words are speaking to Lisa Marie who was broken and just wanted peace. You honored her well Alanis ❤️❤️. I just heard her sing this at Lisa Presley’s funeral. It was absolutely beautiful; almost 20 years since jagged little pill and she still doesn’t cease to amaze me. I have suffered with mental illness all my life. And my heart goes out to all the families left behind by those that believed there was no other way out. God Bless you all. ❤

Maybe i should mourn... i am a victim of the worst mental illness i coulda ever prayed against... but i happen to be balancing out and am extremely joyful right now, but Alanis' tune reminds me of all of you who are still in your various takes of in chains, dungeouns, abysses, valleys - i am praying for us mentally ill - further, to act on my prayers i will continue to fight against the negative image "mentally ill" people are judged with

I honestly feel the issue is ppl do not love themselves enough to have a really good honest talk with others. I am accepting of a lot of things in this world and there are many who are hiding in plain sight lacking self acceptance and love. I have found those to connect with based on technology working out. That's been something I'm grateful for

I suffer from depression myself. One day, when my self-esteem was about as low as it could go, I listened once again to the song. I felt so understood, and tears came to my eyes. Alanis is a beautiful soul who has suffered depression numerous times herself, and this fact helps her write such songs as TIWBG. As a person, she is probably my all-time favorite artist (though of course I do love her music too!)

You strip all the layers away, the bone, the skin, we are all lost souls living this experience. She is beautifully transparent exposing her vulnerability. I think that is why her lyrics resonate with all of us. We all share a multitude of feelings and thoughts stumbling through our life experiences.

Thank you Alanis for releasing this. Prior to this, the only way I was able to hear it was replaying the song when you sang it at Chester's memorial concert....I'm a 45 year old guy and been struggling with depression off and on for 20 years or so. It is so hard to describe to people who don't know.....half the time I don't want to say anything because I don't think the person actually cares. At least I see Alanis knows.....it's a great song......thank you.
