Alaska trip, Port of call - Juneau.
We arrived at Juneau's Port around 12:30pm. The line is so long, all waiting at around 12pm getting ready to depart from the cruise ship to visit the city. By the time we touch the land of Juneau already 1pm. We went to the visitor centre to enquire about the way to go to Mendenhall Glacier. You may travel by tour bus, taxi, rental car or the cheapest way is by city bus to the Glacier. We decided to walk to the nearest bus stop next to the Public Library to catch the free city shutter to Downtown's terminal. Then, we transferred bus numbers 8, 3 or 4 by paying just USD2 per pax to Dredge Lake Road. Almost everyone will alight at this stop and just join the crowd to walk about 30-40mins to the Glacier's visitor centre. Although the journey seems a bit long, you will never feel regret. Along the way the scenery is splendid. Mountains covered with snow, lake, mirror image in the lake, treeline etc. If you are adventurous, you may go to the bear trail for a hike, ha, you probably will have an exciting bear encounter!
Once you see the Mendenhall Glacier signage, follow the path sign to photo- point to get the best view of the Glacier. It will be good if you bring along a binocular to have a good look at the crystal blue structure of the glacier. They are so awesome! Don't forget to snap more photos! What a magnificent Glacier in Juneau that you must not miss.
Next, follow the direction of the sign and walk about 30 mins to Nugget Falls The path is an easy road to the fall. When you are near the plunge pool, you really feel the strength and excitement of the steep fall over a rocky ledge into a plunge pool below. The sensation of your blood flowing with the pounding sound of the water rushing down the mountain. It’s such an awesome place that you really should not miss if you come to Juneau, Alaska.
If you are returning to Downtown by bus from Dredge Lake Road, do take note of the last bus timing, else you really need to call a taxi and it is going to cost you more than USD100.
