In this video, we are counting down the top 10 facts about the Alaskan Malamutes that you might not know.
A Quick Overview:
Group: Working Dogs
Weight: 75 to 100 pounds
Height: 1 foot to 11 inches 2 feet 1 inch tall at the shoulder
Life Expectancy: 12-15 years
When you first see an Alaskan Malamute, it's easy to be impressed by their large stature, wolf-like facial markings, and huge plumed tail waving at you. It's often believed that Malamutes are part wolf. They might play a wolf on TV or in the movies, but in truth, they're all domestic dogs.
The Alaskan Malamute possesses tremendous strength, energy, endurance, independence, and intelligence. They were originally sought to pull heavy sleds over long distances as well as to hunt seals and polar bears. Now chosen primarily for companionship, Alaskan Malamutes succeed in several dog sports, including conformation, obedience competition, weight pulling, skijoring, backpacking, and recreational sledding.
When they're not "woo wooing" or pulling you on your inline skates or watching TV with you, they're probably raiding the trash, surfing your kitchen counters for something good to eat, or digging a nice cool hole in the backyard.
Malamutes regard everyone they meet as their friends. If you're looking for a watchdog, this is not the breed for you. A Malamute's size might scare off an intruder, but that's about the only protection you'll get out of them.
Alaskan Malamutes do best in situations in which they have plenty of room and opportunities to exercise so they don't become bored and restless. Their independent nature often causes them to be labeled as stubborn or stupid, but their intelligence shines through with the correct training. If the Alaskan Malamute is the right breed for you, they will give you years of enjoyment as an active playmate and companion who keeps their puppy joie de vivre well into adult life.

I used to have a male Malamute, as well as a female for a short time. The male’s name was Tundra and the female’s name was Tehya. Tundra had brown/blue eyes and lived for 13 years. We sadly had to have him be put down due to him getting hip pain. Tehya was younger when she passed and we believe she got sick somehow with something she found when outside. Both were beautiful, fluffy and friendly pups. It’s been about 8-9 years since they passed. I plan on finding another Malamute someday because they are absolutely fantastic dogs!

In no way am I defending being a Californian but we do have air conditioners and walk them at night lol. But I get your point, the main problem we encounter here is small women walking “Giant breed” malamutes, I’ve been bit twice stopping a fight between our dogs because the woman was overpowered. This dog breed is not for your typical Californian that’s for sure.

I lived with a Malamute in Vegas. She would lay in the sun when it was °110. Their fur protects them from the cold AND heat. Do a little experiment for me. Wrap your hand in a shirt. Then hold it over a fire. Do you feel anything? No, you don't.

If it was in Oregon, I gave up a malamute around the same time. It wasn't because I couldn't handle her. I just knew she would do better in another home because I was about to be homeless. I couldn't let her live in a car with me when I knew from experience she would adapt very quickly to a new home. Before I lost everything I traveled a lot and had her stay with a lot of dog sitters and they all said she adapted within hours. If you're her adoptive family I would love to know how she's doing. I miss her. I named her Lagatha, after "Lagertha" of Viking lore. All her brothers and sisters were also given viking names, as were two generations of grandparents. As far as I know, the adoptive family renamed her "Mischa", and I want them to know that goes against her family naming tradition.

2 years ago, my husband and I brought 2 older dogs into our home. Both are Alaskan Malamutes . Our female is now 14 years old and plays like she is a puppy. She will talk back to us and can be stubborn but we do get her to listen. Our male is 9 yrs old and has Timber Wolf in him. He is very calm , laid back, always alert and watching, a gentleman especially to me. Both dogs love to be near me especially if I am outside and sleep on the floor next to my side of the bed each night. I seriously love both of them and consider myself the lucky one to have them in my life.

I got a malamute x German shepherd puppy yesterday and he is so gorgeous and loving yet he is only 8 weeks old. Has settled straight in to his new surroundings and we are so happy to have him in our family. He is going to be a big gorgeous dog treated with lots of love and can’t wait to train him. I’m looking forwards to the long walks along the beaches where i live. The whole family have fallen for him in less than 24hrs. I spent the night sleeping on the floor with him and he snuggled up to me🥰 looks like I’m on the floor for a few nights to make him feel loved and not alone after leaving his siblings and mother. He bounces towards me like a spring lamb which is so adorable 🥰❤️😘

I have lived with Alaskan Malamutes for over 30 years now...currently I live with 4, but in the past I've had as many as 12 at the same time. Then they were all trained to pack equipment on multi-week photo and fishing expeditions into the High Sierras, the North Cascades, and Siskiyou Wilderness areas. I have very few human friends, don't miss much about society these days as my Mals provide me with all the entertainment, and companionship I could want...and more! They are my shadows, my best friends and love me as much or more than any person could...unconditionally! Ahh'wooooooooooooooo❤❤❤❤!

My Malamute lived for 9½ years. He lived in Malamute paradise paradise. 7,000 ft altitude. In the summer he went on twice week afternoon fishing trips, and one long pack mule camping trip. He loved de-boned cooked trout. Later in life he had pancreatic problems with diarreah. It was treated with Viokase powder daily. He drank much more water if he heard it running. Doing so would have extended his life I feel. He hated cats and small dogs with a passion. Unlike Huskies, Malamutes aren't neurotic unless they are raised in a weird environment. He visited a Husky kennel with me. He stumbled across a part, fantastically well groomed darling with blue eyes. What did he do? He flipped upside down with his paws in motion and made woo-woo-woo noises.

I grew up with three of these amazing dogs! And they can be very protective of children, as my dad's malamute, Rambo would not let anyone he didn't know near me. He also knew one of my aunts was afraid of him, so he'd growl at her for funsies. Hercules was my malamute and he'd sing for me whenever I talked to him. Shy, was my mom's and no one ran in our yard or she'd tackle them.

@d.b.cooper5775
@d.b.cooper5775 3 жыл бұрын
@@asare2285 Do as much research as you can. If it's your first dog I would probably not advise it. They are great for some but not for others. There's lots of info on Google and stories to read from owners. If you have lots of time to exercise, train, and keep an eye on them then they can be great dogs. If you don't they could be difficult and problematic. So make sure you can provide what the breed needs as any problems are almost always down to the owners not the dog or breed.

I own a giant Wooley Alaskan Malamute known as a M'Loot. His AKC name is KINGFISHERS ZAR NEE BLIZZARD. ZAR is 195 lbs and comes from a long line of Giants. His great grandfather was Koda a giant red at 200 lbs and parents are ZIVA and CHARGER. I Noticed in your Video you had a number of the M'Loot line featured. Also I noticed you had Phil and Nico from Living with Malamutes in the video. I totally enjoyed your clip and found it included a lot of information on the Malamute history not included in other videos I've watched. To finish I have had ZAR since he was 8 weeks old and flown into San Francisco to me from Alaska. He is now 6 years old with his 7th birthday coming in December 2020. My Malamute is currently 7 months old, we also have a 5 year old Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Totally 2 different breed of dogs character wise. Which bring about plenty of entertainment, characteristics, challenges & rewards. You can just imagine the energy of a 7 month male Malamute and that of a 5 year old Staffy. Plus as you know, Malamutes love the chillier cold climate and not afraid of that or the rain, whereas the Staffy, loves the summer heat and hates the rain :).

You should say that the heights you gave are a MINIMUM - there is no maximum height to the breed, I met one at dog training which stood nearly 3 foot at the withers, a HUGE dog, but perfectly acceptable in the AKC breed ring. Also, the breed was featured very prominently in the movie "Snow Dogs" where their personality was described to a T - "they may not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but they can pull anything"

I've owned Siberian Huskies. Arctic dogs are definitely not for everyone. They have distinctive traits And can require a lot of work. Yes they're cute, and this is often why people buy them, but they don't research the breed. So many end up as rescue dogs because it's not like owning a more traditional breed like a labrador etc. Unless you're fully committed I don't think they're a good choice for novice dog owners.

We have two German Shepherd/Malamutes and we live in Michigan. They LOVE the snow and HATE when we bring them back inside. It's funny how their malamute personality overpowers their German Shepherd one. They love everyone, very aloof, stubborn, and constantly want outside when it snows.

When you was bringing up movies how did you forget about one of the best vampire movies that was ever made . The Lost Boys that came out in 1987 that was the first time that i ever seen a malamute and from that point on leaving the movies i had it in mind that i was going to get me a malamute thats how of a impact that breed had on me .

Great video, but I'm not sure where all the facts are got from. My Malamute never once had a bath and was always absolutely spotless. Their fur is self cleansing. Mine never had his teeth cleaned and vets all said he had perfect teeth. But he did have 3 dental sticks a day.
