This is, and I mean this seriously with no irony, one of if not the best film I have ever watched. It’s stunningly beautiful, as many have said every scene a painting, but indeed, the story itself serves as such an incredible backdrop for this exploration of humanity itself. Who these people are, their exploits, such as this, would never have seen light of day perhaps if not for this film. Viggo’s wonderful, but basically every other actor nailed their role pitch perfectly. My favorite movie 100%.

I have read all seven Alatriste books by Pérez-Reverte, swashbuckling masterpieces. The film is totally loyal to them. This movie is phenomenal in its execution. Artistic direction is as good as it gets. Mortensen delivers Alatriste with the stoic and fatalistic persona forged in the book series. King Philip IV, Conde-Duke de Olivares, and Francisco de Quevedo are magnificently cast.

One of the greatest films ever made and with a great cast. A film about Capt. Alatriste (Viggo Mortenson), a heroic figure of Spain’s 17th century imperial wars, becomes a mercenary. The theme of Perez-Reverte's Alatriste novels is how the Spanish national character brought about their empire's demise. One of his observations is the five generation rule, in which a Spanish family takes two generations to obtain wealth and nobility, the middle generation produces people like the King in this film, and then two generations to decline until they are back where they started.

Gerry Leb true, although ironically Charles II was a pretty good king but, turned out he was as sickly as it gets thanks to the Habsburgs fucking each other and thus dying without a heir. One thing though thanks to the Tercios Spain was the world's major power, holding itself even though having something like 150 years of continuous war, having all kinds of shit thrown in our way, and thanks to the tercios we basically held on, after the tercios became outdated and having the Catalans making the usual shit they always do, the Spanish dominance came to an end.

It's hard to find a better film on its subject, and I know of none that shows warfare of the period as well. You are fucking right. My country has had stupid politician in the last 200 years, all creating seperatism or looking for self benefits. Catalonia and the vascs. There is no more patriotism like USA for example and the division due Civil War and Franco is still active (especially in young people). No one explain the good country we were in the school (always done with respect for other countries obviusly).

@@danielmontalvorufian7082 A false patriotism is not real unity (especially in the U.S.), and about half of the U.S. is former Spanish territory. The same Spanish division holds true across Latin American countries. The issue is classicism and greed which corrupts the heart of men.

Actually in that war Catalonia revoulted and sided with France. Also Portugal revoulted (and they won). There was no such a thing as "Spanish people" in the same way, there was no Britishs, just English, Scots, Irish.. etc. The "spanish languaje" is Castilian languaje. Castile is to the spansih peninsula what Ingland was to the islands: just the biggest kibgdom of the region ruling the smoller ones.

I have studied military history all my life. This film's depiction of war in the early modern period is as good as it gets. I detected no anachronisms and clearly the production designers understood how the weapons were utilized. The fencing, especially the duel between Inigo and Malatesta, is wonderful.

Excellent movie, wished I would of seen sooner! Regretful court intrigue can be so destructive, yet, the strength and dignity of a soldier continues to light the way 👍👍

a visual masterpiece. Not even Hollywood could reach this level. Maybe Ridley Scott in Gladiator

This is a very well Done movie. It shows a time fighting wars over religion. A LOT of blood and honor. And it went on for a long time.

4 siglos de dominación, defendiendo su Imperio en el mundo entero. No hay lugar en la tierra donde no haya una tumba española. Fue una época en la que en cuanto España se movía, el mundo temblaba.

I rewatch this masterpiece a few times a year, and listen to the soundtrack on Apple music too.

Excelente película. Me hubiera gustado que hicieran al menos 2 partes, porque faltan muchas cosas y todo pasa muy rapido pero es una adaptación maravilloso de las novelas de Reverte. Lo de Vigo Mortensen es increíble, lo clava. A brilliant film, a great history and great actors. Vigo Mortensen nailed it. Thanks for this gift.

Totalmente de acuerdo. Para quien no leyó los libros, la escena de caza en los alrededores del Escorial es confusa o incomprensible...
