From Wikipedia:
Albany (/ˈɔːlbəni/ (listen) AWL-bən-ee) is the capital of the U.S. state of New York, also the seat and largest city of Albany County. Albany is on the west bank of the Hudson River, about 10 miles (16 km) south of its confluence with the Mohawk River, and about 135 miles (220 km) north of New York City.
The city is known for its architecture, commerce, culture, institutions of higher education, and rich history. It is the economic and cultural core of the Capital District of the State of New York, which comprises the Albany-Schenectady-Troy Metropolitan Statistical Area, including the nearby cities and suburbs of Troy, Schenectady, and Saratoga Springs. With an estimated population of 1.1 million in 2013, the Capital District is the third most populous metropolitan region in the state. As of 2020, Albany's population was 99,224.
The Hudson River area was originally inhabited by Algonquian-speaking Mohican (Mahican), who called it Pempotowwuthut-Muhhcanneuw. The area was settled by Dutch colonists who, in 1614, built Fort Nassau for fur trading and in 1624, built Fort Orange. In 1664, the English took over the Dutch settlements, renaming the city Albany in honor of the Duke of Albany, the future James II. The city was officially chartered in 1686 under English rule. It became the capital of New York in 1797 after the formation of the United States. Albany is one of the oldest surviving settlements of the original British thirteen colonies; no other city in the United States has been continuously chartered as long.
In the late 18th century and throughout most of the 19th, Albany was a center of trade and transportation. The city lies toward the north end of the navigable Hudson River. It was the original eastern terminus of the Erie Canal, connecting to the Great Lakes, and was home to some of the earliest railroads in the world. In the 1920s a powerful political machine controlled by the Democratic Party arose in Albany. In the latter part of the 20th century, Albany's population shrank because of urban sprawl and suburbanization. In the 1990s, the New York State Legislature approved for the city a US$234 million building and renovation plan, which spurred redevelopment downtown. In the early 21st century, Albany's high-technology industry grew, with great strides in nanotechnology.

Back in the old days my girlfriend and I were riding around and discovered that you could exit 787 almost directly into the parking garage under Rockefellers Folly. A few weeks later my nephew from Connecticut came to visit. We exited the highway, parked in the garage, and walked maybe 100 feet to the elevator. It was a clear winter day and my nephew said, "Holy cow, I think I can see Connecticut".

Long comment mostly aimed at those who share the era in Albany referred to: Grew up in Albany mid-50’s to start of ‘70’s. Living on Elk St behind Wash. Ave Armory, we were star-struck with many of the era’s big names at the annual telethon & concerts (the Armory was THE #1 venue for all things). Got Gene Pitney’s autograph to take home to my sister; rock-climbed the Armory’s brownstone facade and watched through the barred windows Peter, Paul & Mary rehearse in a small anteroom after asking their permission; as 5 y/o’s the Capitol was our playground which once caused us to seek and find Gov Nelson Rockefeller in the Executive Chamber after telling his receptionist that we were there to see the Gov - he asked who our parents voted for & told the recep to get us milk & cookies & send us on our way…he was a bit cool after my wise-crack response to his question of who my parents voted for: “not Tax-a-fella!” (parroting my father’s quip); was almost crushed by adults against the wall of the DeWitt Clinton Hotel (we climbed upwards onto a windowsill w/ a prime view) as RFK was thronged on his return from a speech at the Capitol steps - we clearly saw his smiling face as he ascended the hotel’s stairs only ~ 20’ away; but, the biggest star struck event was seeing the Old Skipper (from WTEN’s kid show w/ Popeye & 3-Stooges re-runs) walk up to us on his way to the Telethon and asked me if this alley way (where we were sleigh riding) led up to the Telethon. I was completely shocked as a child to see the Old Skipper (in 3D & in living color with a surreal bluish/gray (fake-looking) beard and to have him directly ask me a question! It was like being in the presence of Moses! / The plaza you videoed was sitting atop of a massive, decades-long controversy that brought immense heartache for all the old neighborhoods it destroyed to create, in essence, Rockefeller’s folly, a monument to himself (or that’s the way it seemed at the time, though his legacy isn’t really touted in the aftermath of the plaza’s build; the tallest bldg, Corning Tower, is named after Albany’s mayor at the time; Rockefeller’s thumbprint is noticeably missing; so perhaps it wasn’t an ego project afterall). / The downtown area is very impressive esp along the waterfront - absolutely no comparison to what that area used to look like. So much has been modernized, which I haven’t seen for 55 years. It’s a big plus, imo. It’s outer Albany, further northwest and in the hood areas which have been truly blighted! But there are still a lot of gems existing in Albany and some amazing architecture - some truly magnificent brownstone homes along State St further toward Washington Park. / But, I would never want to live in Albany again - you can’t go home…it doesn’t exist. I’ll gratefully retire here in my little country paradise in the middle of the Pacific. Albany to me exists only in old photos, not its modern day reality.

@leafbelly
@leafbelly 6 ай бұрын
Not sure if I'm more surprised that you think a drug deal is a rare thing or that you won't go back to a city because something was actually being done about it. I have news for you: There are no cities on this planet where drugs deals are not made. And if you think there are, I have a nice bridge to sell you. It's also interesting to find that you walked up and asked the arresting officer what the person was being arrested for because I'm sure you wouldn't just make a false assumption here on KZfaq for others to believe.

That's a tough one! Huge numbers of people from the northeast states are moving south for lower taxes, less government interference, less crime and milder weather, and friendlier people. Look at Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina or Georgia (but probably not Atlanta.). We moved to South Carolina 8 years ago. But it will be HOT in the summer. Was that any help? @@johnnyfallen87

Any of the states in New England tend to be very safe in general, and beautiful areas
@leafbelly
@leafbelly 6 ай бұрын
Not sure if you're still looking, but most of the US is quite safe for families. There are a few sections of some cities (Chicago, St. Louis, Detroit, Memphis, New Orleans) where crime levels are very high, which skews the national average higher. You're fine if you live in the suburbs or in rural area. And if you decide to live within a city, chances are you'll be fine there as well -- just do some crime statistic research on the neighborhood if you decide to go urban. And I hate to break it to the other commenter here recommending the South, but the only general area to avoid is the deep south (Louisiana, Arkansas, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi), but even parts of those areas are safe. The media is only going to show you the negative.
