Day 9: This pic is nearly at #1 for the year and definitely the top for this band. "Sticky Fingers" - Rolling Stones. Like Pete, I actually didn't like them much for a while, I would even change the radio station if they came on! Then I finally realized their greatness. Especially the song "Can't you hear me knocking", just an awesome song.

The Who's best album Who's Next. Bookended by Baba O' Riley and Won't get Fooled Again which became instant classics. John Entwistle's My Wife and Behind Blue Eyes are also standout. This was The Who going up to another level and one of the best live acts around. Mention to Colosseum Live recorded on a UK tour that year. Blues, jazz-rock with the great Chris Farlowe on vocals, Clem Clempson (Humble Pie) on guitar, with Dick Heckstall-Smith sax and Jon Hiseman drums both British blues giants. Opens with a Pete Brown / Jack Bruce number Rope Ladder to the Moon, then extended workouts on Skelington, Stormy Monday Blues and Lost Angeles. Later that year the band broke up to reform 23 years later.

My number 20 of the year is Pete’s pick from yesterday: The low spark of high-heeled boys by Traffic. Their best album I agree. My HM is Present Company by Janis Ian. At that point she was 20 years old and already on her 5th album. Continuing to be very socially conscious and at times militant. A brave record from a true artist.

Some interesting choices today by SoT. Admittedly, Bloodrock 3 was never on my radar too much but thanks again, Pete, for reminding me to go back in certain catalogues for new music. Still picking randomly from my list and going for a few different items though that is getting more difficult. Today's pick is the live album 11/17/70 by Elton John [also known at 17/11/70 across the pond and elsewhere]. Elton had three albums out in 1971 and at least one more is likely to be a pick before month's end. But - May 31, 1971, not even a year since his debut in America, Elton John plays live in Jacksonville on his Tumbleweed Connection tour backed only by Dee Murray on bass and Nigel Olsson on drums. I was lucky enough to be at that concert. When I listen to the album, that concert comes to my mind. Elton was on his tour to take America and that he did. Those familiar only with the Elton of the last two decades or more may not realize how hungry the band was for success. This album proves it. There is a CD with the entire performance which I hope to add to my library someday. The next day I announced to my parents that I was tired of studying classical piano and wanted lessons in modern music. My piano playing never looked back. A personal favorite with an emotional attachment. Bubbling Below The Top 28: Honorable mention today is Teaser And The Firecat by Cat Stevens. An album filled with the artist's introspective thoughts on philosophy and life. Soon after this, Cat Stevens converted to Islam. And in honor of last night's Hudson Valley Squares show on favorite guest artist on a recording, a note that Rick Wakeman plays the piano the track Morning Has Broken. Not surprisingly, an album that has meant more as the years accumulate.

I've been behind (been busy - which is good) watching these. So, I've been catching up, Pete. Not sure where I'd put it in my top 28, but it would be high up, and that's the debut album of my favourite band...April Wine (the one with the feet). Very different sound to what they became (though it did give them their first Canadian hit - Fast Train reached # 23 or 38 (depending on the chart you use) in Canada and gave the record company enough faith in them to let them do a second album). At one point, Myles Goodwyn has a Robert Plant-like quality to his voice. Runner-up: MC5 - High Time

My choice for today is *Getting Ready...* by Freddie King. Released on Leon Russell’s Shelter Records and featuring a superb backing band recorded at Chess Studios, it’s a fabulous album with a bedrock in the blues but also incorporating hints of rock and soul. Highlights are the perennial ‘Going Down’ and his wonderful version of ‘Walking By Myself’. His stinging guitar and rich, honey and gravel voice are much in evidence, proving what a master he was. My honourable mention is *Crazy Horse* by Crazy Horse. A really fine LP by the musicians that had found fame backing Neil Young. They proved they were more than capable of holding their own without him, Danny Whitten even penning a standard in ‘I Don’t Want to Talk About It’. His death the following year from a heroin overdose robbed the music world of a notable talent.

Day 9 A Nod's As Good As A Wink - The Faces Stewart's solo career has overshadowed this fine band who were particularly good in 1971, releasing their best two albums. This is the one with Stay With Me, their most famous song. My earlier picks have been 1 (A Ballad of ) A Peaceful Man - Gravy Train 2 Sticky Fingers - The Rolling Stones 3 Grin - Grin 4 Nursery Cryme - Genesis 5 The Yes Album - Yes 6 The Low Spark Of the High Heeled Boys - Traffic 7 Felt - Felt 8 Every Picture Tells A Story - Rod Stewart

Today: Giù la testa - Ennio Morricone I'll cheat on this day with a movie soundtrack. The movie is probably more famous as "A Fistful of Dynamite" or "Duck, You Sucker!". Many might have heard the excellent main track but the whole album is awesome. I would easily rank this among the best classic rock albums of the same year. A must for anyone who likes western soundtracks! Day 8: What's Going On - Marvin Gaye Day 7: Thin Lizzy - Thin Lizzy Day 6: Budgie - Budgie Day 5: Sticky Fingers - The Rolling Stones Day 4: Melting Pot - Booker T. & the M.G.'s Day 3: L.A. Zephyr (w/Tommy Bolin)..... Going Back To Colorado Tommy Bolin in 1971 was doing his second album from his first band Zephyr. The band featured a Janis Joplin like lead singer at a time when Janis was still active. A major label release by legendary producer Eddie Kramer. Really cool record. Honorable Mention: Chase ...... Self-Titled A horn-driven band that could have kept the similar band Chicago company over the years. Tragically, a plane crash killed the namesake leader Bill Chase in 1974. This debut featured its hit single, "Get It On." (Not to be confused with T Rex's Bang A Gong Get It On or the more recent Turbonegro classic of the same name.) Had this on vinyl when I had hair, this reminds me to get it now on CD. Thank you to Pete for this exercise and the commentators who have mentioned Chase here before me. Comic Book Geezer Bonus for the Comic Book Geezer Pete.... Fifty years of Swamp Thing. At first we had the Len Wein/Bernie Wrightson science fiction/horror original in 1971. Then in 1984 Alan Moore revamped the character to largely what he is today based in mystical magic.

Picks for today, I’ll second your Prog Pete: Islands - King Crimson HM: Fillmore East Live, June 1971 - The Mothers of Invention At one point, Islands, was my favorite KC record of all time. I love the sound it has, and the starkness of that obscure sound compared to other King Crimson albums. Most people tend to lump it in with Lizard as part of that weird “in between period” with different singers, but I think it transcends that stereotype. The title track, Islands, is just a beautiful masterpiece that has at several times, bought me to tears. Zappa can be considered Prog I guess, more fusion but we’ll throw it in. This album has got some really great guitar work on some of Zappa’s earlier work, specifically from Hot Rats. Super good live album, didn’t quite make the cut. Had it been any other year, it likely would’ve been in the top 28.
