The Alcatraz tour is easily one of the coolest things you can ever visit in your life. You can literally feel the history as you walk around it. It should be on everyone's bucket list. I loved that tour when I went to San Fran and I hope to do the nighttime tour some day.

The black knife shapes is where the actual knifes would hang. That made it easy for the guards to see if one was missing. The same thing was done in the various workshops to make sure none of the tools went missing.

Where I worked we did much the same thing so people would know where the tools were supposed to go and to make it obvious when one wasn't where it belonged.

I lived in San Francisco 23 years, went to alcatraz only once with friends for an evening tour. Once was more than enough. There are unseen and mysterious happenings there. I'm surprised, Adam, you didn't mention that long before the White man came and carnaged the area, the local Native Americans used the island for ceremonial purposes. The bay around that area is relatively shallow in places, and has rocky out croppings(your noting the small continuous wave). The currents there are extremely quick and can change without a moment's notice. On a beautifully clear day, those who can, take their pleasure sailboats out and cruise the bay around there. It can get crowded, but what a wonderful sight to behold. Jacob's "power" comment is right on point. Both of you are the best "Road Trip Companions"!!

Adam, they paint the sizes and shapes of the knives and kitchen ware so that after being used by the inmate staff, when returned, the guard knows every piece was put back. If a spot remains open at the end of each shift, the guards know exactly which piece is missing, including the shape and size by its painted on silhouette. Prisons also do that with the tools inmates use when working.

Adam , I got homesick from watching your video and you did a fantastic job ! There's so much to see there like the Cable Car Museum , Coit Tower , The Wax Museum on Fisherman's Wharf , Chinatown , North Beach , Twin Peaks , Golden Gate Park , Haight-Ashbury , Oracle Park , home of the San Francisco Giants which is enough to keep you busy for a few days . You also have movie locations too that still stand like the Mrs . Doubtfire house , the house where Full House was filmed in , Dirty Harry and Bullitt movie locations , including the route Steve Mc Queen & the bad guys took during the famous chase scene . There's also Karl Malden' s house on Wisconsin Street in Potrero Hill neighborhood when he played Lt . Mike Stone in The Streets of San Francisco . Michael Douglas's character Inspector Steve Keller's house was on the 200 block of Union Street in the Telegraph Hill neighborhood . You may also research the filming locations of Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte's " 48 Hours " , and " Another 48 Hours " . The 007 flick " A View To A Kill " was filmed there along with many other great movies and tv shows .

It truly is an eerie place. It really had quite the history after the prison closed.
