Genesee Valley Transportation's Mohawk, Adirondack & Northern is well known for operating in the greater Utica, NY area, but the railroad's "Northern Division" still survives, serving Slack Chemical in Carthage, NY. Follow along as I film the MA&N's Carthage switcher from start to finish, including a little street running on Canal Street!
Filmed on October 16, 2023 in Carthage, NY.
Thanks for watching! If you haven't already, please subscribe and hit the bell to stay up to date on my new adventures.

Before you comment: I’m very well aware of proper operating procedures, especially pertaining to grade crossings. You don’t need to comment for the sake of educating me, and I certainly hope you won’t comment about it for any other reason. Hope y’all enjoyed this unique operation!

Don’t know why so many are complaining about the crew and operating rules. That’s the crew’s worry. You are just filming a really nice looking ALCO that sounds like it’s well cared for. Do they think you’re gonna tell the crew to blow the horn? Then they won’t let you film. Well done video 👍👍

Awesome video! It’s not often somebody covers the northern division. The second engine that is up in Carthage is MHWA 2403. 2403 was actually on the Adirondack Scenic Railroad as their 4243 until it was sold to the Delaware-Lackawanna (another GVT company) in 2012. In early 2020, GVT moved it up here to Carthage as a backup to 2454. 4243 was also the last engine to be turned on the Tupper Lake wye. Great video bud!

Nicely composed film. In our collective rush to film video the way we capture stills we often loose sight of the train as a whole thing. I enjoyed the way you recorded whole train movements and the cadence of operations as a flow. Very enjoyable.

The initial action takes place on the old Utica & Black River, which once stretched from Utica to Clayton as well as Morristown. NYC removed the stretch between Lyons Falls and Lowville. Slack Chemical is on the old Carthage, Watertown & Sacketts Harbor, and the mileposts on that line are still numbered from Sackets.

Great video. Really appreciate you letting the whole train run past while switching. Reminds us of how slow switching can be, Thoughtful of the crew to clear the level crossing so the cars could pass too. It rained the only time I visited Carthage too, back in October 1985,

Is it just me or have the rail taggers have grown up a little I noticed on this cut, most of the cars that have graffiti its not over the crucial writing such as warnings, regulation and identifying markings. The las time I drove a truck to NY "Manhattan" it took les than an hour to tag the crap out of the box. little bassturds.

Is there some ordinance/regulation that doesn't require them to blow the horn or ring the bell (specifically for the first crossing)? I looked on FRA crossing reports and it does not mention any quiet zone. Not criticizing, just plain curious.
@NorthCountryTrains
@NorthCountryTrains 4 ай бұрын
I don’t think it’s a “QZ”, I just don’t think they felt the need to blow the horn. All the moves are done slowly and cautiously and there’s very little traffic at most of the crossings.
@brianjanes4393
@brianjanes4393 4 ай бұрын
That’s definitely a rules violation though lol. If that’s a public crossing, unless flagged, you need to blow for it. Sounds like the engineers just lazy.

What a joy you made me. Never been physically there but many days to search about that line & surrounding. Good to see improvment. The old signal box at the street of that chemical co. (Google Earth & street view) Have been replaced by the new one on other side of the street. Do you know if there is still some storage on Lowville track ? By the way if i´m not wrong the track have been cut betwen Castorland and Lowville. If so, fun / sad fact, with track removed after Lowville, there is a collection of cars at Lowville and turntable. Those cars can´t go south with removed track, nor north to Carthage, leaving Lowville Croghan with its train museum without rail connection. Not to mention former Beaver Falls pulp mill with trackage also to Lowville. Yep, nice tracks no exit. Back to Cafthage is there also some storage on Newton Falls line ? An other cute scenic line. The paper mill in Newton Falls have seen so much change in it´s history. Good ideas for a layout with tracks on 2 level, not to mention that mysterious wye on short bridge. Just wonder why a wood pile trestle for a simple wye ? NARCOA gang should ride that track that have zero potential before it´s too late.... Thanks again to show us that awakening of that sleepy Alco. Now she works so hard that she´ll still run in 50 years...

Hmmm, no use of the bell over crossings and while street running and a lack of using the horn. Beating the gates at the one crossing that looks like it works and then all the others that do not work. They must have good insurance.

Not big on following operating rules are they? Forward headlight and ditch lights are off, then on, then off again, and I never heard the horn once. They don't get to decide whether to blow the horn. FRA rule 49 states that horn is to be sounded at ALL public crossings.
