Short story: ALCO had one job for Union Pacific and failed miserably.
ALCO used to be a great locomotive builder in the steam age but was not so great at building diesels (better than Baldwin and Lima at least) and today I'm going to be analyzing and roasting the company's biggest flop. Sure, it was huge and powerful like other steam giants ALCO built for UP, but unlike said steam giants was a total failure and destroyed the company's once great relationship it had with Union Pacific in steam age.

You missed an infamous story about the C855. "For what it's worth, those Alco 855 units (A-B-A) where VERY unreliable and only made one aborted westbound trip out of Council Bluffs, Iowa, back in 1964. They never made it to Fremont, Nebraska, because upon making forward transition just west of Summit, all three units had their side high voltage electric cabinets explode into flames. Some local fire department had to put out the flames, and all three units where towed dead back to Omaha Shops. The Union Pacific NEVER let the units operate in a consist together again!"

Wow, what a rave! Yes, Alco bombed out completely with the C855, but I missed interviews with retired UP managers or service people from the period, and other good sources. The C855's may have been serious duds, but not all Alco's have been lemons. After Alco in the US collapsed, Alco's were made in Canada for many years by Montreal Locomotive Works, and under licence in Australia and India. Most of the diesel locomotives of the rail systems of New South Wales and South Australia in Australia were Alco's for many years (made under licence in Australia). Alco's ae still being used in many other countries around the world.

I fault ALCo for not finding some other electrical supplier for their engines, instead of still sticking to GE. The aluminum wiring is GE not ALCo. It's to bad they didn't have any money to work on another turbo. I was an engineer for 36 years, 1974 to 2011. I've talked to a few mechanical dept. bosses who like the 251 prime mover, thought it was one of their best. ATSF RSD15's went LA to Chicago and back all the time. When it comes to electrical issues with ALCo, I blame GE, and ALCo for not dumping them. It seems they used ALCo as a trial to learn their shortcomings.

Not just that but they had basically become used to using Aluminum normally. Maybe if alco lasted into the 90's they might have made a course correction like GE at the time and we might have seen a bit more variety on thebrails today :)

@@mamarussellthepie3995 It was pretty much short sightedness on the part of ALCo bosses. When GE made the split from them, that should have told them something was up and go looking around the world for a new electrical supplier. EMD went to ASEA of Sweden for the GM electrics, and the AEM7's. If ALCo was thinking, that could have been them!

It would have if GE not gotten fed up with ALCO’s failures and betrayed them. Once GE ended its partnership with ALCO and proved it could do better, ALCO was screwed. Also, UP would have been far Morley likely to donate an 855 if they had reworded it with copper wires. I still don’t get why they didn’t.

I always thought the 1960s were known in UP's history as the Double Diesel era, with the main objective building a special generation of locomotives, each having 2 independent diesel electric power plants (power plant as in an engine block and generator) on the same frame. All in the name of supplementing and gradually replace the gas turbines. It wasn't until watching your vids on the C855 and the U50Cs that I learned it was actually, like you said, the Horsepower race, a competition between Alco, EMD and General Electric to see who could do it best, with the key requirement being having 3 locomotives in multiple-unit service, collectively generating 15,000 horsepower. *Anyway, I kinda like the C855s.* Even if they sucked in terms of reliability and mechanical performance, I like how they look.

Seeing this video makes me wonder if the "Kaiser" approach woulda helped in some sort of way. The Kaiser Steel U30C's were prone to catching fire due to the wires and batteries exposed to the desert heat in Fontana so they painted the battery boxes white to deflect the heat and it worked to a certain degree.

Illinois Central had just as many problems with their C636s. They had to be based out of Paducah, Kentucky so they could be towed back to the main shops in case of a failure. They were built in 1968 and were all scrapped by 1980.

A bit of trivia: At 7:51, Union Pacific GP-30 #875 was the first GP-30 built because it was the original EMD demonstrator. It has several differences from production GP-30s like #705 behind it. The 875 has raised classification light housings on the short hood like predecessor GP-20s, as opposed to flush lights on the 705. Also, the duct work behind the fireman's side of the cab curves inward halfway down the long hood, while it goes all the way to the walkway on the 705. Speaking of walkways, notice all of the oval cutouts on the 875 that are absent on the 705. Finally, the roof of the demonstrator's cab did not have the classic "brow" like production GP-30s. It was a completely different design. But you can't tell that from the photo because before EMD sold the demonstrator to Union Pacific, they applied sheet metal to the roof line completely covering the original design, giving it an appearance like production GP-30s.

@river94
@river94 Жыл бұрын
@@AndrewTheRocketCityRailfan4014 It's unfortunate, but I'd argue the 244s did more damage to Alco's reputation than any one individual locomotive. It's important to note the context of the time period, as the 244s were being developed during the later years of WW2, at which time Alco was extremely limited on how much development work they could do due to government restictions. The 244s were rushed because Alco needed a replacement for the aging 539 design that could also compete with EMD, who was starting to surge ahead in the road diesel market. Had the 244 been a more successful design, the lower manufacturing costs of a single engine passenger unit with 2000hp (in the PA-1), would have been a significant factor in drawing customers away from EMD, who had to rely on (more expensive to produce) dual engined units at the time for those higher HP numbers. This however, is not to say that Alco's only reason for failure was being screwed over by wartime restrictions. They were near unwilling to adapt to changes in marketing and slow to commit to diesel development, holding full belief well into the 50s that steam would continue to be the superior locomotive type. The 251s were fantastic power plants that, to my knowledge, are/were recently still having replacement parts built by Fairbanks-Morse, who acquired the rights to the design possibly from Bombardier. Unfortunately, they were too little, too late, especially when combined with Alco's other mishaps. The 251 engined RS11 however, is a great example of what Alco could build at their best. Sorry for the long comment

Cost. They also tried to use aluminum in house wiring in the late 1960's to the early 1970's, which resulted in many fires at the connections. The connections were designed for use with copper wire and aluminum expands at a different rate than copper, this caused the connections to loosen up and overheat causing a fire.
