Thanks so much. Loved the idea of painting on both sides to get even more layers in the picture. Also, great idea to use a thin sheet to first test out the line drawing over the ink painting without going straight to the original. Thanks

I have a pad of the thicker plastic and love working with alcohol inks on it. A friend of mine gave me a pad that was clear, and I wasn’t quite sure what to do with it, but now I do I love the fact that I could have a creation on the bottom one and then put another clear one on the top and experiment so that it’s not on the permanent one. Thank you love it.

Fun experiment with the layers Beth, but I really like your tip toward the end of using a piece of clear over a painting to "test" out how your doodles might look before you doodle on the painting itself.

Great idea for using a 'test sheet' for doodles/drawing. I love how you can really play with colour combinations on separate sheets, to create 'new' colours when they're layered!

Great presentation! Love the technique!! While you were designing your pics I was already thinking about adding a 3d effect 😊. Whether the sheets are placed together (which creates beautiful new colors) or adding a little space between each sheet to create that 3d look, you've got a winner!!

Thanks so much, Beth! Great ideas for layering, bui I especially liked the idea of using it on top of other paintings to try different ideas for doodling. You could redo it on the painting or add another layer to that as well. Simple, fun and oh, so effective! NICE!

Love the ideas! I have a pack of the thinner clear grafix sheets but was unsure what to do with them. Thanks for the inspiration. My one thought was to use them for acrylic paint peels, but I think your ideas are more productive. I’d love to try the thicker sheets and can’t wait to create: abstract, landscape, florals and more! Love the idea for the 3D effect……so many possibilities. :)

Fantastic ideas for layering! The last idea where you placed the thinner plastic on top to tangle, why not just tangle and leave it as a second layer? Guess I’m going out to buy some clear plastic as I already have the white and black. Thank you so much for taking time out to demonstrate.

Loved this. I have an idea for a painting I want to layer and now I know what substrate to use to achieve that look. Would you seal each layer with Kmar and uv sealant? Your suggestion of using clear Craft Plastic for a doodle test is brilliant. Doodling on a finished piece is very intimidating for me, but the plastic will solve my issue. Thanks so much.

Love the layering ideas. Perhaps put some little sticky foam tabs in the corners/on edges when framing to get even more of a 3D or tunnel book look. Wonder what a portrait would look like with layers?? Thanks for the inspiration.

This would be a great idea for helping students understand mixing colors! Do you think watercolors would work as well as alcohol inks? I also added your hint on using the craft plastics over an original in order to figure out detailing to my repertoire.

One thought I had, after I did the demo, was to just put 1 or 2 sheets of the clear plastic in between the painted ones!

For this technique, you don't need to spread the inks with alcohol, right? Are the plastic sheets totally washable with alcohol and paper towel? The pens that you're using are acrylic ink pens? As you can tell, I'm brand new to alcohol ink painting.

Yes, but I do think you can get away with only spraying the top layer (and you could do it on the back (not inked) so that it wouldn't interfere with you inks in any way.

@@jackiejohnston9732 I've only just used more sheets of clear plastic in between the inked layers to separate them a bit. If it's too thick, it will be difficult to frame. I'm going to try 3-D adhesive dots and see if I can frame it in a shadow box. Stay tuned!

You know, sometimes on these small pieces I don't. I feel that the clear plastic is more sensitive to the sprays (more easily speckles it). If spraying, I'd spray an un-inked side on top layer - to protect everything behind it. But if the sprays make the clear plastic hazy, I would skip it and just keep it out of direct sunlight.
