Have you tried using a silica wick in those? Im guessing regular wicks will get charred after some use. Silica wicks dont burn... They dont wick as good as cotton (at least for ecig juice), but its still pretty absorbant, and im guessing it would wick good enough for transporting alcohol pretty efficiently...

High, a very interesting construction with the tubes. Kindly Fiete
@johnbagaas33455 жыл бұрын
My guess is there are NO holes in the tubing... The way ANY alcohol stove works is that the alcohol heats up (creating an increase in vapors), which then pressurizes the stove, forcing the vapors out the jets which are then burned by the flames... In most stoves, there is no direct heat being applied to the alcohol but there's enough radiant heat there to still cause expansion... In the case of THIS stove, the wick (inside the tubes) draws fuel up into the tubes, which is then SUPER-heated by the flames, hyper-expands the vapors and forces them back into the stove, which, in turn forces the vapors out of the jets at a greatly increased rate, giving it that "jet" sound.... A couple of problems I see with this design is (1) The increased pressure / heat generated by this design is going to exceed the JB Weld (glue) specs and probably fail very quickly... (2) The jet holes seem to be too small for the amount of pressure being forced through them which is right on the verge of blowing out the flames... I would either make the holes twice as big OR put 2 holes under each tube... Overall it's a good design (in theory), but that glue is going to fail and possibly be a dangerous situation... JB Weld is fine for use in stoves where there's no direct heat being applied to glued areas but this stove is purposely heating the copper which is only being held in place by glue... Be careful with that
@handy3355 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. You need to solder or braze the tubes on.
@lberthelon5 жыл бұрын
You got it right John B, l would also question weather the JB weld would hold for any length of time under that heat, quick set 5 min. good for 230 deg. reg. JB high strength 24 hr set time 550 deg. l use a lot of JB great stuff.

And also the wick will burn and turn to carbon.
@markb32924 жыл бұрын
I like this explanation but I still can't understand how the tubes create vapor that pressurizes the can AND draws fuel up the wick. Doesn't the rush of vapor out the tubes prevent fuel from being drawn up?

@MattBlytheTheOne5 жыл бұрын
Great video, and you can stand your pot on the coils too. One question: what is the purpose of the wick? Will the heat burn the wick? Will the stove heat and boil the fuel without the wick?
@keithanderson59135 жыл бұрын
so the wick essentially makes the propellant creep up it, getting it into the copper tube, which is then heated up from the fire, at that point it heats it up to gas state and has pressure forcing it out the 3 small holes causing the jet flame.

I have read through many of the comments and see the same questions asked. So, I will try and explain what is in the build and why. This is an alcohol stove. They are using alcohol. As others have stated, other types of fuel can be used. During the build at about 3:14 you will see him drill 3 small holes. These holes he is drilling are the jets for the flame. Looks like he is drilling these holes with a 1mm bit. Which if you watch later, at about 9:20 the first burn is not good, jets are to small. Then at about 10:20 it looks like he has increased the size of the jets to 3mm. Look closely at the flame it does look bigger. Now, many have asked why use the rope? The rope is used as a wick, to pull fuel up into the pipe and pre-heat it. This pre-heating of the fuel in the wick starts a vaporization of the liquid fuel. Vaporization of a liquid occurs when a liquid is heated to its boiling point. This also raises the temperature of the liquid fuel in the tank. Which raises the pressure in the tank, causing more fuel to vaporize. The rise in pressure causes the jet effect. You want to burn only the vapor not the liquid fuel. Hope this helps someone out there understand this great little stove.

Really really nice!! Congrats my brother! I really want to make something like this now! Haha But I have to ask, how we "turn off" it? I need to wait it burn the whole alcohol inside it? If i just "kill the flame" doesn't will still letting the gas goes out of it? If there were some way to close the thin hole that let the gas out can it work to "turn off" the stove? Anyway, congrats for the nice project you have done!

its a pressure type stove. The three coils act as a heating element. As temperature increases, pressure builds up which results into pressurized ejection of alcohol. Its efficiency is increased because of the small diameter of the holes (the small ones in between the coil). If you check out "how to make Fancy Feast stoves", they'll explain why you have to make a pressure hole. That being said, since its just a stand alone experiment/demo, you'll have to make one (if you're bored) to compare boiling times with other types of alcohol stove.

@@buki7474 Hmm do you think this works as a camping stove? With wind and all
@buki74743 жыл бұрын
@@beeeean I can't say much about it since I haven't made one but here's my take: Its effecient despite the hassle of the assembly required. It took this stove 5mins to boil water while it roughly takes 6mins to boil. Its worth the build as long as you have junk lying around. The U shaped copper coil is, what I think, the hardest part to look for. The only thing I know that has a U shaped copper coil is the refrigerator. This stove needs a cook stand that also acts as a wind barrier. Just like the one used in the video. If you put your pot on the coil, it could risk damaging the burner. This could be used as a secondary stove for boiling noodles and water. If you want to do quick fry, I think you'd have to increase the fuel capacity. The main drawback for this,IMO, is refueling between uses. You would wait for the burner to be cool to the touch to refuel or risk hurting yourself.
