Coins? You use a little faded plastic chip you got for free because it was attached to a beer bottle as promotion and you keep it in your dusty center console of your car and fish for it with your fingers each time you're going to shop. No? Just me? Okay ._.

they ususally do a lot locally, even stuff that sounds internationally. They are not famous for paying farmers and so on very well. But no cheap discounter is. Also a lot of the cheap own brands of many chains come more or less from the same factory.

When the stores in Denmark have adopted the Aldi style and pricing and offer products that match the local taste better, as a customer, I'd call it mission complete.

South does too though. But it's kinda locked away and you need to ask the cashier to open it up for you

Not just in Germany, here in Portugal Aldi also sells lots of Trader Joe's products.

We call that "Quengelgasse", I guess "whiney alley" would be a good translation.

And in Belgium an extensive assortment of obscure cigarette brands!

It's because in the US Walmart set the standard and in Germany it was Aldi.

as long as you bring the cart back to get your coin or token back, that system still works.

Same here in Australia. Well, not a lot have it, but Aldi has them for sale (I have one).

They didn't have an Aldi where my gran lived so she wrote them and two years later they built one. She wasn't the only one to say so but man that is funny to tell people.

Here in the Netherlands it's considered a very low priced and low quality store not to mention the terrible working conditions for it's employees.

@@dib000 Different standards due to Brexit perhaps LOL, but maybe you're talking bout 'Aldi Süd'. 'Aldi Nord' employees in Belgium and Holland went on several strikes some years ago and again in 2023 due to the poor conditions and payment, again; for which Aldi in Holland and Belgium is known for.

Yeah, i haven't been to Aldi for years since the next is maybe 800m away while the next Netto is only 400m, but last november the Netto was closed for 4 weeks and i had to go to Aldi, and i was really surprised that the prices were absolut the same. I still had in my brain that Aldi is always the cheapest, but no, Netto is totally on the same level. They even have a way better selection on ice, and even some cheaper ice compared to Aldi.

"gut & günstig" is their store brand. bringmeister is still their online/delivery service, but is now owned by a czech company. - the discounter chain of rewe is the penny chain, and other parts are eg toom home improvement and DER touristik. austrian and eastern european chains ADEG and billa also are parts of rewe - metro is a complicated story of its own with many purchases and sales of other companies. fun fact: microsoft renamed the metro interface in windows 8 to avoid a naming conflict :-) - lidl is the worlds largest discount chain (when counting their 12200+ stores in europe and the usa) and a first shop with that name was founded in 1858. the supermarket chain since 1968 was Handelshof, renamed to Kaufland in 1984, and the discounter chain Lidl was started in 1973. its name couldn't be that old name from the old store for legal reasons, and thus they bought naming rights from a teacher and painter of the same name. last summer they had 170 stores in the usa and 960 in the uk, 1600 in france and 3250 in germany look at wikipedia to find many rabbit holes concerning all these companies ...

Actually it was Aldi North that sold the cigarettes since 1961. I expected it to be the catholic more enjoy life oriented South too, but it appears to be a matter of attracting shoplifters or not, among other different insights in how the run the business.

many people are not aware that netto is the discounter of edeka, penny is the discounter of rewe, and Kaufland is the non-discounter of lidl. thus many companies and their daughters and sisters, who all try to beat the other in quality and mostly in prices.

I remember 45-50 years ago i had an aunt who worked at Bahlsen and she told us that the Aldi house-brand of chips they had at that time, was also created by Bahlsen. Their cost was maybe just 30-40% but it was the same, just packed into different packaging.

in a different store, i had a closer look at milk (and some other products). they have to put stamps on the bottles or tetrapacks that have unique identifiers for the factory that produces it. i found eg three different milks from the same factory, one was a premium brand with 4.5%, one was a cheaper but otherwise identical store brand, and the third was the noname version that only had 4.1%, thus a little different quality, but it cost only half of the brand product. everybody can decide whether he tastes any difference, or whether he even might want 0.4% less fat, and which price he is willing to pay for those small differences.

Most Aldis in AUS are 4 aisles. Some have 5-6 if the building is physically shorter, or if the loading bay has to be in a weird place. But 4 in a long rectangular store is their most frequent. BTW one thing he missed is the shelf packaging. The cartons used for delivery are also the shelf stackers. They don't hire staff to move items one by one from a carton to the shelf. They simply cut open the carton and put it on the shelf! They even sell $20 bag sets (4x) that fit across the trolley so you can pack your stuff directly from the checkout and avoid stopping at that big bench. Genius!

No right would be a valid contract but they have none. It's more a Gentlemen's Agreement between the two founders to not disturb the business of the other Brother by starting a selling war (at the end both companies would make less profit, therefore no good idea). Aldi North buyed Traders Joe somehow in the 70s or 80s and why should they invest a lot of money to refurnish (to Aldi Style) and rename a established brand? Same in Austria with Hofer that was buyed by Aldi and still runs under the old established name.

Often enough that joke with "same factory" is also just reality... friend of mine worked at a chocolate factory, they made the same stuff all day... but once every 4 hours or so they changed the packaging.

In European cities it's definitely to reduce theft. because it's pretty easy to just use the cart as a tool to carry it all back home; you're probably there on foot anyways. But if you take a look on American infrastructure and the commercial zoning laws (AND the American way of life): Basically everyone takes the car to the grociery stores and the parking lots are huge. In America the coins in the carts are definitely more to incentivise people to bring back the cart. fun, anecdotal fact: In rural Germany many stores don't require coins to unlock carts, they are always unlocked. Bringing back the cart and not letting it sit in the way is just the right and orderly thing to do, so people just do it.

I'd say depends :P Aldi south is better imho, but pretty much everything else is better than Aldi North.

many decades ago, we saw aldi as cheap alternative to the costly supermarket chains like edeka and rewe. now edeka has its own discounter netto, and rewe has its own discounter penny, while lidl has its own non-discounter Kaufland ...

it's the treatment of a possessive noun. going to Aldi's is said as custom of shop naming sense in many places. It was very common to call a grocery store by the owners name. As such a grocery store is treated as if it's a personally owned store even if it's a huge company. It's the Piggley Wiggley's even though the store is just called the Piggly Wiggly on the storefront. WALMART is not a grocery store, it hence is not treated as such. Giving the possessive to the store name is just something people do without realizing why. Diners also were given the same treatment even if the place wasn't a person's name. Red Robin's comes from the top of my head. "I'm going to Red Robin's for a burger". Occasionally since people don't remember why they do it, things that just sound good to them get that treatment. Barns and Noble's so on.

@@Darkshizumaru then it should be either "ALDI" (company), or "Albrecht's" (owner), right ? but just like with so many other companies, almost nobody remembers on a daily basis that Adidas was founded by ADI DASsler (and Puma by his brother), HARIBO was founded by HAns RIegel in BOnn, or that ALDI are ALbrecht DIscount stores.

wikipedia says that E.Leclerk joined forces with Conad(italy), Colruyt(belgium), Coop Swizzerland, and also the german rewe group (their supermarkets are rewe, and their discount chain is penny) to create a buyer alliance. they also expanded into other countries, including to take over all 25 stores from the billa chain (daughter of rewe for austria and eastern europe) when billa left poland.

Well, when we look at under what circumstances Americans work - then I guess that they will call heaven what we Germans with our way better work-life-balance call a bone mill! Or in other words: Our bone mills are still their working heaven! I think if I had to work in the US I wouldn't do longer than two or three years before having a nervous breakdown!
