In an effort to see where the BEST and most AFFORDABLE spot to buy groceries is between Target and Aldi, I decided to do a little grocery shopping challenge. I took $50 into each store to see which had the best prices and deals. So, in this grocery haul, we look at a $50 Aldi Haul and a $50 Target haul and compare which store offers the best deals and quality on their grocery items. Hopefully, this will help you shop for groceries on a budget.

I personally would of prefered if you made a specific list and bought the same things at both stores. Like maybe doing a basics, milk, bread, eggs, cheese, fruits, vegetables, and meats or proteins. It sounds like a lot but I tend to shop at three or four different stores within the month just to take advantage of their specifics sales.

I agree. I shop aldi and target. I buy the large half and half carton from aldi for $1.99. Same size target brand - 10 cents cheaper. I’m going to aldi less and less lately because target is sometimes cheaper, and I don’t always want to do 2 stores in a day.

So glad you said this because just because a box is bigger doesn't mean it has more product. Lol she is kinda clueless the reason the packages look the same is because most of the items are the national brand and they just change them to no preservatives and no artificial dyes and sell than under aldi brand. And the boxes are smaller at aldis because they use less square footage to sell their items.

I prefer Aldi 100% over Target. You need to look carefully at the produce at Aldi. When it's fresh, it's spectacular and the cheapest deal in the area. They also have a large selection of reasonably-priced organic produce. The few generic boxed or canned items I have tried from Aldi were fine and a very good deal. They're also willing to refund your money if something spoils quickly.

Cltinturkey..I agree! I was glad to see someone checking out Aldis, and comparing prices. Thanks for sharing your hauls!! I shop Aldis weekly and I shop during the week. It is my go to store unless the grocery has a BOGO sale, and even then it might not be as cheap as a comparable item at Aldis regular daily price. The produce is great if you pay attention, and they restock everyday. I bought strawberries at the grocery, and they had bad ones in the middle and didn’t last a day. April’s prices are better and they have good prices on organic produce if you are so included. I buy broccoli crowns, cauliflower, asparagus, Brussels sprouts, carrots, tomatoes, and more for sometimes half the grocery price and sometimes less. The same with fruits.I do shop the perimeter, and I shop with a list. If the prices is not great, I adjust the list or wait til next week. Aldis frozen veggies are great. We routinely buy the corn, broccoli, asparagus (for stir fry). I buy meats at Fresh Market or Sams and get the “no antibiotics” items. But the meat section is improving greatly, and the sales are great. I agree that this might not have been a total fair test. I would like to see you do something like this over 3 or 4 trip, you don’t actually have to buy, just shop a list at both stores, and compare “apples to apples” so to speak. Keep up the good work with comparing grocery stores to Aldis and other stores, I get a lot of great info from your videos, Thanks!!

I worked at an ALDI. There are PLENTY of healthy options. It is their: Fit and Active Simply Organic Live Free (Gluten Free) Produce comes from different locations therefore. It is hit or miss as you said. IF YOU WROTE THE SAME LIST, and bought ONLY those products at both stores you would have money left over at ALDI. ALDI also has what is called a Double Back Guarantee. With your receipt if you don’t like an item, or the quality of the item is not good. You get a refund of your money, AND a replacement of the item/something similar of the returned item FREE.

Sorry if you have difficulty at your own stores. Great during covid cause no one is stocking shelves, just open up top and setting on top. Less chance of contamination. Also in and out quickly, fast lines, clean bathrooms. No personal checks only drawbacks. If I move, I'll make sure to have an Aldi's nearby.

I am not one to comment on videos, but I find it very easy to find healthy options at Aldi. I am a vegetarian and dairy free and Aldi is more accommodating to that than an average grocery store as well as better prices. They have plenty of unique items as well as your essentials and name brand comparables. And not to mention, every grocery store has days where the produce is meh. I love Aldi and I love what the brand stands by. Yeah their cookies are $1.50 ... they arent tricking you into anything lol. Their veggie burgers are half the price than at a reg store, as well as eggs, almond milk, granola, yogurt. So many healthy options.

This is a no brainier: $50 will ALWAYS go further at Aldi's. Why do you think they've been able to grow when many brick & mortar stores are shutting down? I grew up on Aldis food & it was always poor & working middle class that shopped there. Nowadays you see is BMWs, Infinitys, & Lexuses filling up the parking lots! The rich learned how to stay richer!! They aren't dumb! Aldi's organics line is great & they have great produce at the ones I've been to. Also, Aldis isn't forcing people to pick up cheaper unhealthier food items & put them in their carts!! Hahahaha! THAT happens at every single store you go to: bombardment of cheaper & unhealthy options! Don't get me wrong about Target either: if you go straight to the clearance sections, 8 times out 10, I ALWAYS find good buys. Use their Cartwheel app & check their sales items too & your $ will go farther. A free tip to everyone: most stores put their cheapest items on the lowest shelving, their sale items in the middle shelving & the most expensive on the top shelving. It has to do with where our eyes normally look while shopping! 😉

All the produce cost twice as much as Food Lion. They only had poor quality meats (like the super woody chicken breasts w/ 15% solution). They had lots of items similar to Dollar Tree, but instead of $1 are $1.29/$1.49. Most everything else is cheaper at Food Lion and/or Walmart. Aldi doesn't impress me at all!

@@ebonysmith5456 Well, everyone is entitled to their opinion. That being said, if you read at least 10% of the comments posted, you will see a vast and varying degrees of experiences with Aldi food quality & their prices. The majority agrees that Aldi is the cheapest & have good quality, large selection of, etc. However, it seems there are parts of the nation that don't get to enjoy these true Aldi benefits & if I was the owner/CEO/CFO of Aldi, I would most definitely investigate WHY there isn't consistency across the board at every single Also store across the nation. I'm in the N.W. part of Indiana & we do not have Food Lion stores. We have a fairly large family owned grocery chain, Aldi's, Walmart, Target, & some organic only small stores here & there. My own experience is expressed above since I do have access to Target & Aldi, which is what I was the main subject of the video. Glad you found the best prices & quality for you & yours. Have a blessed day! 😄

@@ebonysmith5456 I used to have a Food Lion half mile from me and I hated to shop there. Prices were not that great, fresh foods were not often fresh do to the low number of shoppers there and it just seemed unpleasant to shop there. I was able to get some pretty good deals on items including meat/deli that were reduced do to expiration date, but you have to be picky on some of those things. Their meats are surprisingly good quality and a good deal. They have some weekly fresh meat specials that are super deals.

The south one was amazing and about twice the size of the north store before the remod. I really think each Aldi's stock depends on what products are in high demand in your area. If something doesn't sell well, why keep stocking it. And everyone knows you don't pay for your cart, you put down a 25 cent deposit that you get back when you return the cart to the coral.

But I've certainly never gone grocery shopping at Target XD I just found out a few weeks ago they even sold groceries (I've never ventured to that side of my Target since I only go there for like...the kind of stuff that most people go to WalMart for, like plungers and cheap movies, since one I don't like WalMart and two Target is closer to me than WalMart anyway)

You don't "pay" for a shopping cart - you choose to use one and get your quarter back. Personally, I just bring in my reusable bags & fill them. I shop quite healthy when I go to Aldi because I go for the produce + European cheeses. I also like some of their organic snacks. Their tomato basil lentil chips are fantastic. If I stick to seasonal produce, Aldi wins most of the time. If I'm shopping for salad components out of season, Aldi is a steal! compared to a local store. They keep their tomato, cucumber, lettuce etc. prices the same (also from the same mostly Mexican suppliers) all year round. In the summer I hit the farmer's market for local produce & use Aldi's to fill in on some things that are in season but not locally such as cherries or strawberries in July/August etc. I also feel confident trying new things there because their return policy is excellent. I don't even need to bring in my receipt if it's an Aldi brand item that I didn't like...they give me my money back (and a replacement product if I let them which I usually don't)...no quibbling. Some of my local grocery stores have limited hours on their returns counters so even if I had a problem like rotten meat etc. I have to keep it as well as the receipt and wait to return it when it's convenient for THEM not for me. I don't even have to wait in line to do a return at Aldi's - you just do it when you're buying your groceries. They have great deals on European food items, a rotating selection that keeps me from getting bored, quick turnover on popular produce items so they're more likely to be fresh than the grocery store's, and a staff that doesn't get in your way but is there if you need help. I just wish their hours were longer as I can only get there on my day off :( That and I wish I could get the frozen gnocchi there...it was amazing but my local Aldi stopped carrying it. Sure, it's hard to make it a one-stop-shop, but it's great for value for money.

If you're using your reusable bags while you shop, you know that they have to be emptied when you get to checkout. The employees at my local Aldi will not put your groceries back into the bags, when you go to checkout. So it's best to get a cart, even if you have to put a quarter in it. Now if you think their hours are bad now, be thankful they're not holding onto their original hours of 9am to 7pm Monday to Thursday, 9am to 8pm on Friday, & 9am to 6pm Saturday, & closed on Sundays. Until 2002, those were the hours of my local Aldi stores, dating as far back as 1979. In 2002, they experimented in opening select stores on Sundays from 9am to 6pm, to see if it was worth it to be open on Sundays. Except for areas where there are still blues laws, they decided to open all their stores on Sundays, with most being open from 9am to 8pm, & made Monday to Saturday 9am to 9pm. There's one Aldi by my that';s open from 9am to 7pm daily, because it's in a high crime neighborhood, & most people won't go to that store past 6 or 7pm daily. My local Save-A-Lot has even worse hours, by being open from 10am to 8pm Monday to Saturday, & 10am to 6pm Sundays. My local Ruler Foods (Kroger's version of Aldi) is open from 9am to 8pm daily.

Don't even have to watch this video to know the answer to that! Aldi would beat Target out any day of the week. I've been grocery shopping for my family for almost 30 years now. I've got my grocery game down to a science. We live near a large town & there's just about any grocery store you can desire to go to. They are all nice & competitive. That, among many other things, factor into pricing, selection, availability, etc. To each their own, but I could easy do better at Aldi than Target with any budget.

With Aldi, they only sell the most commonly purchased items and in certain sizes. Because of the limited sizes and product selection, their stores are much smaller. Walmart may or may not have a better selection. By me, they're out of a lot of stuff, either because the manufacturers can't seem to supply every Walmart in the country, or because they do have the stock, but they intentionally keep staffing levels so low, that stores don't get stocked regularly. By me, with the right sales, Meijer beats Walmart in price, & quality of produce & meat. I look at the sales, & see where I can get the best deals. Out of no frills stores, I have Aldi, Save-A-Lot, & Ruler Foods (Kroger's version of Aldi). My local Ruler Foods doesn't have the selection that Aldi does, but for what they do have, they're even less than Aldi. It's all Kroger brand products, with some brand name products here & there. If Ruler Foods had a larger selection, I could do the majority of my grocery shopping there. Once a month, I take advantage of Meijer's 10 for $10 & 11th item free sale. With their Mperks program, if they have Mperks available during that sale, it's possible I can get some of the dollar items as much as 75¢ off, or even get an additional item free, besides the 11th item. I wait until I get all my $1.00 items rung up, before I enter my Mperks, so it doesn't try to use the Mperks as an excuse to give that item free. If I get all my free items first, it will not recalculate to make the Mperk the free item. instead, I'll get that item for under $1.00, or get another free item.

As an aldi employee it also depends on the time you go. You want the freshest nicest stuff? Go early in the day. Later in the day people have picked through it, slammed boxes on top of good produce causing bruising, or straight up leaving it in the wrong area(wrong temps for long periods of time) causing it to rot quicker. At my store we pull anything that we wouldn’t buy ourselves, but we normally only have three people on shift at all times(one main cashier, a backup cashier/person doing any job given to them by the manager, and of course a manager) we can’t always be over by the produce checking/fixing it up but we try our damn hardest. At our store it’s not uncommon to find eggs, milk, meat, or frozen things sitting on a dry shelf, because customers just don’t care.

Love ALDI! The concept of a quarter for a cart is so smart as people are so greedy, they will make sure to put it back, and ALDI just saved on an employee therefore keeps food price low. I also love to bring my own grocery bags, I do it everywhere I go, but generally get a puzzled look, whereas its just standard at ALDI. Great way to be more ecological! I also love how speedy the line is, they just dump everything in the cart and then there is a long table to pack it up myself, perfect. I get to sort things right away. produce together, fridge stuff together etc. Their home brand is very good quality, love the organic cereals and cans, egg free mayo, healthy bars and cheap organic produce!!

I agree with Mypokerbuzz, what you are saying about Aldi is not true of our local Aldi. I have never found the produce looking like that you have shown here. It used to be some of Aldi food was more unhealthy (mostly more salt) but they are striving to make their food more healthy. Their eggs, butter, milk (chocolate & white), pickles...oh just on & on is a huge savings over any other store, plus excellent flavor. So what's a quarter for the use of a cart, you get it back...that is peoples own fault, they are too lazy to return the cart or even to put their cart in a cart corral. Twice I didn't have a quarter cash on me...they loaned me a cart! Their employees are so helpful & nice. At Christmas I had to put 5 things back (actually I had the cashier take them back), when I was loading my groceries into bags the cashier came over to me with the 5 things & said...here & Merry Christmas....and gave me a hug! Even though some of the items were a little more unhealthy (at first) the flavor was even better than name brand. I find their cereal is better by far! Cookies, salsa, pretzels, chips, fritos (once again, on & on) & the flavor is the same! I come out of Aldi with everything I need for the month & have never spent over $65.00. I shopped someplace else & for two weeks I had no food left at the end of the month. I had to go to a food pantry! I live alone so that is one reason, another reason I must shop very carefully to only get what I have to have & maybe one or two things for treats. I can only speak for the things I buy. I mostly only buy fresh food, never packaged food, I do buy "some" canned veggies! These are just my findings at Aldi! Smiles & grateful for Aldi Judie

So I don't like to negatively comment on people's videos but I feel like you didn't get a good comparison. I love Aldi and if you are careful about your selection it is the rock-bottom price on everything including produce. Throwing junk in your cart happens at every store if you don't shop the perimeter yes Aldi does have insane deals but I find myself coming home more with stuff for the house then random cookies, then again I'm not pregnant. At Target if you're not using cartwheel and coupons no you're not going to get a good deal but you can do fantastically if you shop sales, use cartwheel, your red card, and coupons. You just have to know what you're doing. If I go to my local grocery store with $50 I'm not going to get half of what I can if I just pay attention and coupon at the stores where I'm going to get the best deal and then fill in the rest at Aldi

This video shows me that you don't generally shop at Aldi or Target on a daily basis. You can shop at Target for so much cheaper using Cartwheel (and Ibotta). They actually have some great deals, you just need to know what to purchase there. At Aldi, you're not being "forced" to buy unhealthy food. Just because cookies are a little over $1 doesn't mean they need to go in your cart. Aldi had great produce for very cheap. I buy all my produce there. You can buy organic there as well and so many things without the added dyes. Their "store brand" is actually just as good as name brand in many cases. We are a very healthy family (I'm a Health Coach and very picky). Aldi also has a great Vegan line that is similar to Trader Joes which I buy often because my teen son is Vegan. You can also get name brands on their specialty aisle for a lot cheaper than another store.

I’m pretty shocked that she goes on about how healthy she shops but she buys Perdue products?? They are just as bad as Tyson in regards to how they treat their poultry especially claiming that their chickens are fed a vegetarian diet when free roaming chickens always go for worms and bugs so that right there tells me they just want to throw out claims knowing people just believe whatever they say! And idk anybody that thinks Target can even come close to Aldi not just in price but in quality especially when you factor in how much Aldi has committed to removing dyes from every one of their products and providing a huge array of snacks affordable prices. She would have had a much more successful video if she would have had a list of things to buy and compared prices with each product not just picking whatever she felt like. Figure out what day your Aldi gets their produce and shop then. They are a smaller store so they aren’t able to keep fresh produce as much as bigger stores. Plus if you’re in the junk food aisle guess what you’re going to see... JUNK FOOD! It’s not Aldis fault you didn’t have a list and planned out your video better

hipsterapunzel i was just going to write a comment abt this! My hubby n i used to always shop at walmart as we're disabled and on a budget. But we've found that going to local grocery stores, shopping the sales, n using coupons, we save a ton more! We went back to Wal-Mart recently( for non food items) and decided to get some groceries while there.... besides they were out of a lot of things, all but 2 things were a lot more! And those 2 were only pennies less. Walmart doesnt do sales like local stores and while you can use the manufacturer coupons at walmart(i think you still can) you can use them and store coupons at local stores to save twice as much! I think it'd be a great video!! Great suggestion!! :)

My store only stocks produce first thing in the morning and they let it all sell out then they restock the next morning. Going mid day or end of day you will find iffy produce. I go on my day off as soon as they open and I always find amazing produce selections. Great video!

Next time try to attempt the same items at both stores, I loved the idea but it's not really a battle at that point. Aldi goes with as much local produce and things are not going to appear perfect while it is totally edible. Aldi also has taken the time to produce products made with better ingredients. I prefer Aldi because it's a more well rounded company, good products, good to their people and good to the environment.

Not sure why its aldi's fault that you chose bad food. Literally any grocery store you go into will have cookies. The only reason I could think you would pick more healthy options is that aldi is small so you will was all past almost every item where at a regular store you might not go down the cookie aisle. The produce at my aldi is usually good. If you dont like it you can take it back for a double money back guarantee. So I don't think this was a super unbiased seeming video

Did you use the Target app? It’s a great way to save at Target. Also you save 5 cents on each reuseable grocery bag you use. I love shopping at our Super Target, it has way more options than a regular Target. Our Aldi is ok, but I wasn’t able to do a total weeks worth of groceries there. For me it’s just a place I’d go for a couple of items. Their organic deli meat, almond milk, organic produce, and frozen fruits are nice. 🤗

What most people don't know is that almost all of those Aldi foods are the name brand items. Aldi just has to repackage it under the Aldi name. My husband and I got Aldi's large chicken pot pies one time. The outer box said Aldi with some off brand name. When we opened the box the package inside said Marie Callender. So we knew the repackaging thing is true. Also searching their sauce one day, I noticed the back said Prego. So Aldi is the same exact food packaged under the off brand name. When my husband and I found the name brands (Marie Callender pot pies) we knew most of their food would be the same. Did you know makeup companies do this too? It could be MAc makeup under a different name, and you get the cheaper price. Look it up, it's true.

I had a relative who worked at a food factory. They made things like frozen waffles/pancakes etc. He said “yes” they do make foods for many different companies but that the ingredients were different. Don’t know how true that is but that’s what he said.

But... you didn’t do it right!! You didn’t use Cartwheel or any of the digital target coupons on the app 😫🤔 They almost always have at least 5% off the Target brand food but I’ve seen up to 50% off deals on name brand items! No one should ever buy groceries from Target without Cartwheel... it’s always more expensive! Plus I forget to add if you use the Target Redcard you automatically get 5% off your entire total... on top of any extra savings you already got!
@SarahSchneider2
@SarahSchneider2 6 жыл бұрын
They make cartwheel so easy now because you can just scan the item and it automatically adds the coupon to your cartwheel bar code and then you just scan at checkout. Plus for people that don't want the credit card you can also get a debit card version of the red card.

The thing with Target is you have to shop sales and use Cartwheel and the two usually stack. They have a Cartwheel collection specific to the weekly ad. Also, she bought two pricey items - tofu and bacon - compared to produce and dry goods at Aldi. A not smart, get what I want today shopper should avoid Target. A little effort and shopping/stocking up (not hundreds of an item, but 2-3 months worth) makes a world of difference. With little effort, I save 30% at Target, bringing it below grocery stores. With planning, it’s 50% overall and some items 100%+.

My best friend has worked for Aldi since they came to Michigan.. I have learned a lot from him 90% of everything in the store is a name brand product with their name on it. I have never seen bad produce like that because as soon as it starts getting even a little bad they mark it way down. As to the names of things the chips are uncle rays, pickles a vlasic, the spices are macormick, the pizzas frozen are Tony’s. The deluxe Mac and cheese is Kraft and the breads come from what ever your local main bread company is and the cake mixes are Duncan Hines etc.

This highlights the importance of a price book. The everyday price of the rice is cheaper at target, so when you are getting close to rebuy time you do a quick stop at target. Always factor in time and travel cost.

The trick with Aldi is to go early or later at night. Fresh food is out early in the morning and meat is reduced in price later at night. I have found that the baked goods, bread and the cheese is generally of a good quality, cereal and nuts too.

The “sell by date” is assuming you’ll eat it within a week of buying it, so it’s actual expiration date is 7 days from what packaging says because again it’s a sell by date not eat by date. AND also sugar cookies are amazing!!!!

I feel like with Aldi you have to find the good ones kinda like Walmart. There’s an Aldi near me that always have a good variety of good produce but the other Aldi nearby always has lots of bruised produce. I still love to shop at Aldi because my overall grocery bill is about 30% lower than if I shop deals at the local stores nearby and I can get a 5 lb bag of jasmine rice for under $5.

Please do the comparison. I’ve been shopping at Aldi for 25 years. You have to know what to buy at Aldi. You have a ton of comments on this- the Aldi you shopped at was not good. Sorry, but they are not like the Aldi’s around me. We eat paleo (with white cheese, quinoa and buckwheat added). Aldi saves us so much money and I am so thankful for Aldi’s! If you don’t put the junk in your cart- you don’t buy it. Target is only convenience for groceries, but you’re so right about the temptation- if it’s right there it’s so hard sometimes!

If you see something expired on a grocery store shelf, bring it to customer service, you could possibly get one for FREE. When I worked for Rouses (a chain of grocery stores in the South) they had a policy that if someone found someone expired on the shelf and brought it to customer service, they'd get a non-expired version of that item for free. We had people that would comb our shelves every week looking for stuff.
